Imminent Vegas monorail closure rumor incorrectly starts due to bad reading comprehension on Twitter
Have you heard that the Vegas monorail is closing?
If you've been following Vegas-related Twitter, or other social media, you probably have.
And it kind of is closing. At the moment there is a soft closure date set for 2030. Why? Because the company which built the monorail has gone out of business, and there are no parts available for it. It is assumed it can scrape by another 6 years given the existing parts they have for it, but they're planning to shut it down after that, rather than let the parts run out and have it die.
This situation should be simple enough to understand, but the idiocy of our current social media world turned this straightfoward situation into a circus.
Vital Vegas (Scott Roeben), who tends to be pretty good at what he does, as long it doesn't involve politics or tipping advice, wrote a very good article describing how all of this occurred: https://www.casino.org/vitalvegas/la...ling-brouhaha/
In short, here's what happened:
- Corey Levitan, a columnist who works for both the LVRJ and casino.org, wrote a good article describing the monorail's upcoming fate.
- Las Vegas Locally, a Twitter account which is similar to Vital Vegas, and typically does a good job, dropped the ball and attempted to (falsely) correct Levitan, without directly naming him:
https://twitter.com/LasVegasLocally/...93971069767843
- Vital Vegas snarkily corrected Las Vegas Locally, again not mentioning them by name:
https://twitter.com/VitalVegas/statu...00166409126319
- The monorail's Twitter account then tried to deny that they're going to shut down within the next 4-6 years, which is just a flat-out lie. They probably just simplified the matter, because apparently it's too difficult for people to separate "shutting down in 2028-30" from "shutting down soon":
https://twitter.com/lvmonorail/statu...31977096966376
- Las Vegas station KTNV published an article about the situation, also with the monorail people denying it's closing: https://www.ktnv.com/news/las-vegas-...ulating-online
What a fucking mess.
I still believe Levitan's account -- that the monorail will die sometime between 2028-2030 due to lack of parts, and probably be shut down entirely in 2030 even if still functional.
