Nightmare traffic day driving from LA to Vegas

A truck with lithium ion batteries caught fire between Barstow and Baker, closing I-15 northbound, with no alternate routes without turning around.

I-15 northbound remains closed a little bit north of Yermo. Motorists have to turn around and go back south, then connect to I-40 east. But wait! It's not over!

Due to both increased traffic and existing construction, I-40 east has MASSIVE backups starting east of Newberry Springs, and continuing until Ludlow. Then somewhat east of there, massive backups again exist on and off until Fenner, which is already getting fairly close to Laughlin.

And if that's not enough, I-15 north in Vegas is closed most of the way on the Strip.

The drive from LA to Vegas, typically about 4 hours at this time, will take at least 7 hours, perhaps 8.

That's nothing compared to Thursday, I understand I-15 North was closed around Baker due to an accident, three helicopters landed on the freeway, and then due to construction another standstill on I-15 north of San Bernardino, due to single lane construction bottleneck.

Friends trying to get into Vegas were basically unable.

You will clatter on that I'm upset b3cause I'm responding but tbh I had same thoughts. However unlike gas engines which run constantly, the only extra power consumed is AC while stopped. A hybrid would be the best in such a situation.

Anyway enjoy your dream car. It is nice owning it on VCT just sucks you can't drive it.

I don't know, but I will say that VCT was a LOT more fun when Alan Mendleson was still around on VCT. Still RIP to Alan. I remember posting a thread about Alan's 18 in a row claim being believable and wondering why Alan never even once posted in that thread and lo and behold, Alan DIED roughly around the time I started that thread about him. :eek:

Sounds like you have some interesting parties.

My buddy held his old, dying dog in his arms while admistering the coup de grace with a .44 mag.

More than a day later, this is still going on.

Even at 2am the traffic to get to Vegas from southern CA is brutal. What a mess.

One other thing to think about....

I-15 has a major flaw in that it lacks alternate surface street routes. I know many major highways have this issue, but it's especially a problem when the highway is traveled on so heavily, as I-15 is between LA and Vegas.

There ARE alternate routes throughout parts of I-15, but unfortunately the stretch of road between Harvard (north of Yermo) and Baker, about 43 miles, has absolutely no surface through streets or alternate routes. If something happens in that area, you are fucked, short of turning around and going back.

That's exactly where this closure occurred, hence making I-15 impassable going north.
