Oakland A's relocation.

I don't expect much interest in this topic on this forum. It IS Vegas related so I am posting here.

The New stadium for the A's relocating to Las Vegas will not be ready until 2028 season. The A's deal in Oakland expires at the end of this year and Oakland has shown no interest in extending at a reasonable rate. Why wouldn't they be a little bitter, the team is leaving.

So I just saw that the A's will play in Sacramento for the next 3 years. They will share a minor league stadium with the Sacramento River cats (SF organization). The stadium hold 10,000 people and the A's have averaged 9200 this year.


So my question is why? Why aren't they moving to Las Vegas next year and play in the minor league stadium in Summerlin (near Red Rock casino) which is only 3-4 years old. They could share that stadium with the Aviators who are in their OWN organization. And start building the fan base in the city they will be permanently playing in beginning 2028? Doesn't that make more sense than a temporary relocation to a 3rd city? Are the fans in Sacramento really going to embrace a team only there for 3 years?

The stadium in Summerlin's capacity is also listed at 10,000, although only 8200 fixed seating which is a little less than Sacramento.

I just find this temporary relocation for 3 years kind of weird when you could play in the city where your new stadium is being built and start building the fan base. Any thoughts?

I know fuck-all about how these things work but I suspect a big problem would be scheduling games for two teams using the same stadium.

I suspect that us true, but they would be sharing the stadium in both scenarios.

Yes, and that is the problem.

Some are home games, some are away.

How can this be coordinated for two separate teams?

Assume schedules are set at least a year in advance: the A's come to LV and find that many of their previously set home dates don't match with those of the Aviators: oops...how can two teams play at the same place at the same time?

Well the logistics would be extremely challenging.

They would have to either schedule the two teams games on different days, or if that was not possible, then at different times.

Perhaps they could reach out to a single screen movie theatre to get tips for how the movie theater manages to avoid showing two different movies on the same screen at the same time.

My brother (the imaginary one) says it is about the TV contract with a California sports network. If they play the next 3 years in California, that contract remains valid. If they move to LV early, or Salt Lake City for 3 years, which was also rumored, that contract is void and they would need to find a new TV revenue stream, which provably wouldn't match what they have in California.

I guess it is always about the bucks.

That's proprietary information...the A's would have to buy the theatre to gain access to their scheduling software.

I get where you’re coming from. It’s kinda surprising they’re moving to Sacramento instead of setting up shop in Vegas early. I’ve been following the A’s situation and it seems like starting in Vegas would be smart to build that fan base before the new stadium’s ready. Maybe it’s just a matter of timing or lease stuff—sometimes these decisions are more about what’s feasible right now rather than what might be best in the long run.

Did you read the thread, or just the OP?

They aren't playing in the Summerlin stadium in LV because of the summer heat.

It's one thing to force minor league kids to suck it up and deal with it. There's no way such a plan would fly with the MLB Players Association.

They will need to have a roofed stadium before they can even think of playing in Vegas.

I suppose one compromise would be playing in Vegas in April/May, and then in Sac from June 1-Sept 15, and then in Vegas for the remainder, but it's probably too burdensome to work that.
