Spirit airline files bankruptcy

Knew THAT was coming.

I flew Spirit both coming and going on my recent east coast trip. I like Spirit. Low prices (discount airline) and you can pick your own seat. they also offer a bigger front row seat (front 2 rows) as well as several rows of the middle seat blacked off for just a little extra money, so you are not crammed in. This was the first trip I did the middle seat blocked off. I think that is relatively new. I usually do the bigger front seat.

I also like that spirit has a red eye from Vegas to Phila, which I usually take and did this trip as well. That means you don't lose an entire day like you do when flying from Vegas to Phila with the time change. Take a little nap on the red eye, wake up and your ready to go...start of a new day.

So there were some hints that things weren't going well at spirit. My return flight this trip, a direct flight was cancelled as were a number of stop over options about 3 weeks prior to my trip. So I picked a 1 hour stopover in Denver which was pretty much on the way. Added very little to my flight time home. then less than a week before my trip, that was also cancelled. And again, several other options were cancelled at that time. It left me with one option of flying from Phila to Orlando, layover and then on to Vegas. pretty much doubled my flight home time.

With so many flights cancelled at the last minute I figured they were in trouble, so today's news doesn't surprise me. But I do like Spirit. Much better than other discounts carriers like Frontier. So I hope they get their act together and survive.

I agree Spirit is better than Frontier. But anything is better than Frontier... those people are crooks. Spirit was going to merge with Frontier, then they were going to be taken over by JetBlue but that got blocked by a judge. Maybe they had no other options.

Of course UNKewlJ had to twist a story about an airline into some lies to make it seem like he ever leaves his tunnel.

Friends don’t let friends fly Spirit. It’s a shit airline just like Frontier and Allegiant that isn’t worth the savings. You are always risking a cancelled flight or connection with no recourse for another flight because they don’t run the routes enough or have the extra planes. The saving just aren’t worth the hassles for most of us.

American runs the same red eye flight from LAS-PHL 365 nights a year as part of 4-7 other direct flights a day on the route based on time of year. AA offers the “basic economy” option that is close to the same price as Spirit but it does have limitations if you think you might have to cancel or change your flight though.

I’m cheap at times, not Druff Jew level cheap though, but airfares are one area that’s not worth saving a few bucks. To me the airline game is semi AP if you put the time in and play it right with credit cards and shopping portals.

As far as credit cards and shopping portals, my main card is with Amazon and I love how easy it is to redeem points against purchases when I buy from them online.

Of course NO one is as cheap as Druff! :D But relax Boz, I am doing fine. I just like Spirit. I have flown them not exclusively, but a lot since I moved to Vegas and never had a problem. No cancellations. Maybe 1 or 2 slight delays of an hour or so.

I am sure I can find a replacement if they go belly up, but I hope they survive. Just like more blackjack tables and games, more airlines is better for us all.

If Spirit has comparable accomodations on their LV red-eye I'll admit I was wrong...but I ain't, am I?

You can't really compare International airlines/flights... apples to oranges. But I agree, pretty soon domestics will all be the same and you'll have to pay extra for: a seat assignment, anything to eat or drink (besides water), any bags at all and a reasonable amount of legroom. The discount airlines are forcing the others to strip down and compete.

I had a Singapore whore last night and still don't know for sure if I fucked her ass or vagina, but it was surely tight as all hell for the record books.

I like the "anything is better than Frontier" line. Although I did get a $500 voucher from them for a bump once, so that's a fond memory. I know, hard to believe. Frontier is brutal with the nickel-and-diming which is actually more C-notes than dimes.

Spirit flies out of Knoxville and Asheville and Nashville here, so they would be missed.

I agree with the majority of this, but Allegiant out of these southern cities has schedules that work to avoid LV weekends pretty nicely. Out of Ashville is all Sun/Thurs, which works fine for me for an odds-scouting trip. With the cost and hassle of driving weekends in LV these days, anything that gets me in/out Sun/Thurs works. Having said that, I use AA 75% of the time. My friends who fly much more than me also are AA aficionados.

AA has been trying off and on for a couple years to make BNA (Nashville) a semi hub. Perhaps to provide some relief for CLT that is overwhelmed for its size until the next expansion. So there are some good rates flying through there at times compared to DFW or CLT. The biggest thing I miss about Philly is it being an American hub so my non stop options from TPA are limited now. This year alone I have flown through Nashville a few times to Montana and even Philly much cheaper than through Dallas or Charlotte.

AA tried this through Austin as well for a couple years to help Dallas with crowds but gave up earlier this year. I was flying to Reno through Austin monthly for half as much as Dallas, especially with miles. We still have a few million AA miles left from my business days and still add to it with our cards so I’m not switching anytime soon.

I’m definitely biased toward AA but with status the few times we have had any issues, they have quickly moved us to another flight with minimal delays. A good example is a couple years ago we had a morning flight to Missoula going through Chicago. The Chicago flight was cancelled so we would miss our connection. Instead AA flew us to Denver on their metal and then put us on a United flight to Montana that got us there right around the time the AA flight from Chicago would have. The legacy carriers still work together in situations like this. Try that with Spirit, Frontier or Allegiant.

I used to fly cross-country fairly frequently and back then I found the best overall carriers were United and American.

The scam Frontier was doing went something like this I believe. They would change/cancel your original flight and give you the option of a refund or flight credit. If you were smart you always took the refund. But if you took the credit and picked up another flight, then when that one got cancelled or changed (fairly likely) you no longer had the option for a refund and Frontier flight credits expire quickly. They also try to charge you a substantial fee for using customer service to change flights... and slow, unresponsive chat only, no phone customer service.

The cancellations got to be such a problem the last couple times I used them I also booked a backup flight on SW with points, just in case.
