I started with a picture, so we can see what this is really about.
Jermain Thomas a United States Citizen born on an U.S. army Base in Germany to a naturalized U.S. citizen serving in the United States Military was deported to Jamaica, a country he has never lived or even visited.

The kid was never a US citizen because his father was not a citizen at the time of the kid’s birth (or even at any point until after the kid turned 18) so - no derivative citizenship.
I agree it’s a travesty removing him to a country he’s never even visited but he was never a citizen because his father’s naturalization happened after the kid was 18.
A few things would have helped this guy,
He had a green card his whole life. 1) How about trying to go through the process of becoming an American citizen.
2). Don't commit crimes and spend time in jail on a green card.
The father, who served in the US military for 18 years became a US citizen in 1984, which was 2 years before his son Jermaine was born on a military base in Germany.
So Jermaine didn't NEED a green card. He was a US citizen the moment he was born. An army base is considered no different than being born in the US, as we learned in the case of John McCain born in US territory in Panama. If it wasn't the same, McCain would have been forbidden from running for President.
At the hearing DHS stated the man (Jermaine) was a citizen of and from Jamaica, which was a lie. He had never even set foot in Jamaica.
Now look, the guy was homeless and probably mentally ill. There is some documented cases of criminality, although not sure to what extent. If the guy has done some criminal activity that requires he be punished, he should stand trial and go to jail, in the United States. Although treatment would be preferable option.
YOU just can't snatch United states, natural born Citizens and deport them to a country they have never been, simply because you don't like the color of their skin. And THAT is exactly what has occured.

Children born on U.S. military bases overseas do not get automatic citizenship, but they typically acquire citizenship through their parents if eligibility requirements are met and proper paperwork is filed. Stock said typically they have to go to the State Department and file certain applications to obtain a "Consular Report of Birth Abroad."
"Thomas was admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident in July 1989. His visa form listed his nationality as Jamaican," the 2015 court filing noted. Thomas moved around the U.S. a bit from bases and ended up settling in Texas when he was older.

Ok, it appears circumstances are a little more complicated than the first source I read.
But STILL the guys father was a US citizen and 18 year military Veteran at the time of his birth. Can't think of anything more disrespectful to a member of the military who serve this country, at times giving their life that to try to disrespect them in this matter.
JPfromLa answer me this? Do you honestly believe the color of this dudes skin didn't play a factor in this? If he was a lilly white man of Irish/english decent,., whose father was born in Ireland and came to The US, Joined and served in the military, became a citizen, and was a citizen at the time of his sons birth, do you really believe it would have went down like this? be honest.
And by the way, I am not posting this because I am not a Trump fan. The dudes first hearing was during Obama's term. Trump is just getting around to deporting him. Wrong is Wrong.

My answer - No. The color of his color skin did not get him deported, the color of his character (or lack of ) did. There's lots of Jamaicans in this country that have not been deported - why, they are not running around for thirty + years with a green card and a criminal record.

This thread is yet another example of UNKewlJ's stupidity and inability to grasp simple timelines. College educated, no less. Or come up with his own timelines that make any sense.
Derivative citizenship is where the parents of a child are or become U.S. citizens anytime before the child turns 18, AND have spent at least some time in the U.S. prior to the child's birth. It is automatic - no need to apply.
Calculating exactly what standard applies, is beyond the scope of pea brained UNKewlJ, but also difficult even for some immigration attorneys to grasp.

In the case of this Jermaine character, it took a whole set of appeals up the circuit to make the determination that he was not a citizen.
Sounds like a case of very unfortunate circumstances happening to someone who may have deserved them.
Some of his criminal offenses were burglary, robbery, etc.
Or as the saying goes, sometimes fate doesn’t even use lube.
