Hate someone in Vegas? Do they have expired tags? Nevada wants YOU to be a snitch!

The Nevada DMV, fresh off a serious ransomware attack which completely crippled them, has decided to recoup those losses by starting a snitch program.

There is now a program in place to where you can snitch on anyone who has either expired tags or no license plate. You can make these tips anonymously.

On October 21, the DMV reported that they had received 5000+ tips in less than 2 weeks of the program.

Now they're bragging that the snitching is continuing at that same rate, with 5000 more tips coming in during the next 2 weeks.

Can you believe this shit?

Imagine being a snitch so the government can collect fees. Dumb.

I've heard the counter arguments:

"I have to pay fees, so should they!"

"These people are a menace and usually drive without insurance!"

"These people not paying causes may rates to go up!"


To all of this I say........BULLSHIT!

Driving with expired tags, or no insurance, is a risk. If you get caught doing so, you have to pay a stiff penalty, and may even get your car impounded. If that happens, tough titties, and I have no sympathy for these people. That's the chance they take by not following the clear and obvious regulations.

However, this a matter between you and the state government, NOT private citizens. The government should not be creating a "report someone didn't pay their fees" program so people can weaponize it against their enemies, which you know is going to happen.

Those who try to avoid these fees eventually get caught, and they eventually suffer the consequences. Let the process be handled by law enforcement and the DMV.

Furthermore, they do not cause registration rates to go up. Rates are not set based upon the total number of vehicles which register. Do you think they're going to lower registration fees thanks to this program? Fat chance.

What about insurance? Will this get uninsured drivers off the road? No, because these violations go against the VEHICLE, not the driver or owner. These people aren't going to quit driving because someone snitched on them about registration fees. They'll round up the money for the penalty, get the car back (if worth it -- otherwise they'll just buy another beater), and be right back on the road.



In general, I do not like government snitch programs regarding fees or taxes.

Now you might say, "Druff, they already have such a program for the IRS. Why aren't you bitching about that?"


But they actually don't.

The IRS snitch program requires extensive evidence.

If you write to the IRS and accuse me of tax evasion, your letter will be thrown in the trash. Why? Because you have zero evidence, and the IRS does not take action based upon theory or conjecture.

Their program requires direct evidence, or at least specific details, of such tax evasion. This will often come from ex-spouses, ex-lovers, ex-employees, or former business partners -- all people who would have access to such knowledge, and can provide it to the IRS. The IRS even pays a reward -- a cut of the taxes they eventually collect from the cheat.

For example, a letter to the IRS saying, "I know that John Smith hides income in an offshore account" will be ignored. However, if you wrote, "John Smith sent $250k to Bank Z in the Cayman Islands in 2024", that might trigger an investigation to see if they can find any evidence of this. If it matches, then they will often take action.

That's very different than a program where you can just snitch on any random person whose car you see parked or driving somewhere, causing the cops to come over and take a look and see who they can cite.

Good for the Nevada DMV!

People who move to LV need to follow state & city laws--just like current residents do. If you just became a resident you have 30 days to pay state fees to register your vehicles. Too bad that Nv. registration rates are among the highest in the country. You made the choice to live in that gridlocked-traffic shitbox town--now live with ALL of it.

Generally, those who move aren't the ones driving around without insurance. It's the current resident degenerate gambler slugs doing this--and there are a massive amount of these people in that town.

Every large city should have this type of snitch program. Too many people think they can circumvent the statem and just slide by. If the general population can help the city and state by getting all residents to contribute what they're lawfully required to contribute, then that's a win-win. Simply writing this off as some type of "gov't overreach" is very short-sighted. And just like with anywhere: you can LEAVE if you dont like it. Whining is for wimps.

My Mother saw an advertisement for one of these "$1,000 for snitching," programs and said something like,"I don't like the "Get $1,000 for snitching programs. That's a surefire way to get the informant in trouble themselves if the criminal finds out who turned them in."

Man, I got pretty lucky the other day. I was coming off a long drive from the airport. I was pulling into a small town, connecting from one highway to another, and I basically did a California-style stop at the stop sign, something I don't normally do, but I could see it was clear as day and wasn't really thinking about it.

I don't think I've ever seen a cop, sheriff, or highway patrol around here except during events. But sure enough, as soon as I made my right-hand turn, I saw the highway patrol car just sitting there, and I knew he was going to pull me over. Fuck, fuck, fuck, I have a lot of cash on me, and I have out-of-state plates.

Sure enough, the guy pulls me over. It first walks up to the passenger side for my wife and the dog are and he says, "Oh, let me go to the other side so I don't upset the dog anymore.

I thought that was cool with him. He seemed fairly young and to have a friendly demeanor.


I had my ID ready, and I'm looking for papers as he's walking up. He asked if I knew what he pulled me over for. I'm like, yeah, I sure do, I didn't come to a complete stop, sorry its it's been a long day.

I didn't want to play any stupid say-nothing games given the situation with having so much cash out-of-state plates etc. At that point, I just wanted a ticket and to be on my way.

I told him we had just bought property down the road and that's where we were headed. He can see that we're looking for the registration and insurance, but can't seem to find it. Yeah, I normally keep it in the glove compartment, but there's no glove compartment in the van, and I have tons of paperwork to search through. He says, Don't worry about that, your ID is fine for now. As he was walking away, I said, Well, go easy on me.

When he came back, he said, "I just want to let you know your registration has expired." I'm like, are you serious? "I didn't know that. He said, "Yeah, "it's only been about 11 days, be sure to get that taken care of... Please come to a complete stop next time, drive safely, and have a good day."

They are probably just trying to model their program off the Stasi.

At it’s height the Stasi had about 90,000 paid employees, but it had twice as many unpaid informants,

This was helpful since East Germany started as a destroyed country & didn’t do much better over time under communism.

So they needed to think outside the box to save money.

Another thing the Stasi was known for was secretly targeting problem people with dangerous X rays through walls.

This way they could harm & sometimes kill people but avoid any negative human rights blow back.

That might be phase 2 for Nevada.

Once they get a list of all the people creating wear & tear on the roads, but not contributing any revenue for highway maintenance & upkeep they can secretly target them with X rays so they die or get too ill to travel by car.

Yes, you did get lucky.

FYI the civil forfeiture shit, while often aimed at out-of-state plates, is not done by all departments. Cops usually don't just decide to search your car and then confiscate cash. Usually these are stings where they specifically get behind out-of-state cars, pull them over for a phony violation, bring out a "drug sniffing dog" which indicates an issue (even if you have no drugs), and then they search the car and find the cash. Then they take it.

So it's all pre-planned. Usually this occurs on highways, and not where you'd ever find a stop sign.

But yeah, this cop was very cool about the whole thing. The fact that you indicated you were a local who had just moved there was helpful.

I once got out of a ticket in a similar fashion. I made a turn where it said "no left turn" (it wasn't one way, they just didn't want the left turn there), and I got pulled over. This was in southern California. At the time I was a Nevada resident and was in CA visiting my parents. I said to him, "I'm so sorry about that. I didn't see that sign. I'm from out of the area, and I'm very confused driving here. I don't exactly know where I'm going. I'm trying to get to my parents' house."

The guy looked at my Nevada license, gave me directions to the city where my parents lived, and let me off with a warning. It was a trap where several cars were being pulled over (because tons were violating this no-left-turn thing), so I was shocked I got out of it. I guess I sold the "confused out of stater" story well, even though I grew up in the area and knew it extremely well!

I see nothing wrong with bringing violations of civil or criminal law to the attention of the relevant authorities for follow up and enforcement.

We are a nation of laws.

It's not about luck--it's all about paying attention to your driving like you're supposed to. People do make mistakes. If you're worried about driving with a large amount of cash, pay extra careful attention to what you're doing. Just common sense.

Dan, in the book I had sent to you you may have read the part where I got stopped on I-15 just outside LV. Since then, I've only been stopped one other time, and I've driven 100x what anybody else here has driven since then. Most of the time I'm always carrying at least $5k in cash. In fact, when we drove to Ocean Casino Resort this summer I had an avg. of $30k on me at all times as we went back & forth across the country for the 2nd time since May. Neither of us ever worried about a thing.

It's all about vigilance and caring about what you're doing, and what COULD go wrong.

I had a friend living in Vegas but kept his vehicle registered in Kingman, Arizona. Said he saved on registration and insurance. This was back in the 90’s.

The problem is that fees are used to maintain our transportation infrastructure.

That's why I have no issue with police or other city/county officials enforcing the laws.

If these people don't pay their fees, and they get caught, they should deal with the consequences. They knew what they were getting into when they chose not to pay.

My problem is turning regular citizens into enforcement soldiers. That's a big difference than the city stepping up enforcement.

Also there is the very real possibility that the police runs a background check on the snitcher and the snitcher ends up being arrested themselves. I have seen a few videos where someone reports someone else to the police and the police runs a background check on the person making the report and it turns out that the person making the report has outstanding warrants and the police arrests the person making the report.
