All good things must come to an end. 66 years 5 months of never having to see a doctor. Now I’m in ICU. Heart attack.
Everyone pulling for you here and wishing you a speedy recovery.
You will be pounding the pavement better than ever in a few days
The good thing is he is posting after the main event. That's a good sign.
Mickey, I'm sure all wish you a speedy recovery.
Going to a hospital at the first sign of a heart attack is the best advantage play you can make. Best wishes to Mr Crimm. It's a very positive sign that you're texting on twitter.
Hang in there Mickey! God Bless.
I caution those thinking that mickey's posting is a good sign. That is simply a result of the technological times in which we live. While we all hope the best for mickey, being in ICU likely means he is facing some sort of procedure, hopefully on the lesser end, maybe a stent (like Bernie Sanders had) as opposed to something much more invasive. AND there will be lifestyle changes required no matter what.
Something MaxPen posted at WoV may be the most important thing posted on these forums in quite some time. I hope he doesn't mind me reposting it here:
"REMINDER: It is important to see the doctors regardless of perceived well being once you start getting up in the years. Might allow you to make necessary changes before catastrophic events."
We are lucky enough to live in a time of great benefit from medical ability and advancements. We can survive and prevent situations that people couldn't a century, or even a couple decades ago. The advantage play is to take full advantage of that.
Again, wishing mickey the best.
Get well soon MC. Looking forward to more pictures from your road trips.
Wishing you the best Mickey. Get well soon. I need someone to argue politics with.
Get well soon mickeycrimm, looking forward to reading your posts that contain a wealth of knowledge.
Wishing MickeyCrimm a full and prompt recovery.
Praying for your recovery, Mickey.
Imagine what I'd have said a year ago....
But things have changed. Mickey knows how I feel about what's happened.
We need him back.
Mickey, since I don't have a Twitter or WOV account, I will give you my best wishes for a speedy recovery here on VCT.
Does anybody know if MickeyCrimm has family to help him in this time of need?
Mickey is a good guy deep down. You can tell. There is no way he'd go out of his way to explain stuff to people if he wasn't, Hope you're doing well, Mickey.
While medical bills are irritating, the ambulance costs are outright staggering.
Mickey could be a changed man after receiving the bills. His new mantra could be "Socialized Medicine" or "Medicare For All".
Just kidding MC. Someone needed to make you laugh. I did not intend to cause a spike in your EKG. On a serious note, make sure you listen to your doctors and nurses. There are no merit badges awarded to those who overdo things when leaving the hospital. Be good.
You may be closer to the truth than you think. My wife had vomiting and diarrhea late one nite and felt she couldn't wait till morning to see the doctor so to the emergency room we go. First was the nurse, IMMEDIATELY followed by some aide who wanted to know how we were gonna pay for our part aside from insurance! To make a long story short, what would have cost $100 ended up being $9,000 total! We were charged $900 EACH for two rooms because they had to take her to another room for xrays. Now WHO is gonna complain their wife isn't worth $9,000- so the matter is forgotten. Then come the less fortunate with medicare-but who cares? They just got enough from your billing to offset THEIR costs! Secretly, we ALREADY have corruption in health care and there's just enough kickbacks from corrupt pharmaceutical and hospital costs to delay corrective action. Oh, and don't forget the lawyers who prey on lawsuits.
Any word on Mickey crimm? I tried calling him and no answer.
How many days is normal if they had to open him up?
Is it time to suspect the worst?
That would be the nut low to have a first and last visit to the doctor at 66.......damn
I had my last open heart surgery early on a Monday morning. They had me up walking (a few steps) Monday evening. BUT, trust me, posting or Twitter is about the last thing you are thinking about for a few days.
I am not yet thinking that about Mickey, but better that some alternative suggestions being thrown about.
Medicare is not enough. You need a medicare supplement plan. There are no deductibles or co-pays with my plan.
That is correct. That is what I had for my spouse, who was on Medicare. A Medicare supplement plan, sometimes called medigap because it covers most of the 20% that Medicare doesn't cover. I say "most", because we would still get a bill for very small amounts, like a dollar or two for most procedures or bills. I was never quite sure why that was, just paid it.
This is what most responsible people do. It is only people like Rob that think they need to steal, cheat and game the system, every system, with every thing they do that would even consider just stiffing the other 20% because they can.
That BS that doctors are happy to just get the Medicare assignment portion is just that....BS, by a bullshit artist. What Rob's BS statement equates to is going out to dinner. You get a bill for $87 and you say well I am only going to pay $55. That is all they expected to get anyway.
And BTW, Rob's example is exactly why more and more doctors and medical providers are refusing to accept Medicare patients.
Medicare pays 80%.....Period. The patient is responsible for the other 20%. That is the deal. That is what the patient agrees to when he accepts Medicare. Stiffing that 20% is no different than stiffing the restaurant or taxi driver. It is stealing.
Sounds like you had a medicare advantage plan instead of a medicare supplement plan. There are small co-pays with a medical advantage plan. However, with a medicare supplement plan if you have the best (plan F) there are zero co-pays and deductibles. By the way, you can no longer get plan F.
No it was a supplement plan through an insurance company. The way it would work is say you get an Xray that was billed at $300, the bill would be submitted to medicare who would pay 80%. Medicare actually past 80% of what they assign for an Xray, but let's not get into that right now. So Medicare paid 80%, then a bill was submitted to the insurance company for the remaining balance, in this case would be $60 and for some odd reason the insurance company would pay like $58.28. Then they would mail me a bill for $1.72. I never understood this. I asked once and the answer made no sense, so I just would pay these small odd amounts. Crazy as it seems I would get bills for less than a dollar sometimes.
This was original Medicare and a private medicare supplement plan. Original medicare is what he had when I got involved. I never even understood or looked into the different Medicare advantage plans, I just stuck with his original Medicare.
I see a ton of commercials on TV now, with all these extra benefits, supposedly at no extra cost. Joe Namath does one of the commercials. I really don't understand the medicare advantage plans. They look too good to be true. But I really don't need to understand them right now. Maybe in a few years when my Mother turns 65, because I know she isn't going to understand Medicare.
I have deleted the troll posts from this thread, and banned blackhole from it. Let's show some respect here.
I have always liked Mickey, and hope he makes it through this.
I really hope we will be seeing him back posting out here in a very short time.
As usual, kew is making it up on the go, no matter how stupid he appears.
Aside from the supplemental plans for Medicare--which as a previously healthy person mickey certainly would not get--that 80% kew espouses to know so much about is only 80% of the amount Medicare is contracted with, which is much lower than the full-up prices they'd charge for someone with means w/o insurance, and lower even than the cash price they'd charge to regular customers w/o insurance.
Similarly, kew shows himself to be equally moronic about those "people who just saved your life". They get paid regardless if it's an illegal alien with no pesos in for childbirth, Nancy Pelosi in for yet another face and boob lift, Hillary Clinton in for a butt lift, or kew in for the discounted sex-change operation he's been longing for.The absolute last thing anyone thinks or cares about is if other people are paying their co-pays and deductibles.
Wise up.
If Mickey only has original medicare, he has until Dec 7th to sign up for a medicare advantage plan. The fact that he has medical issues now will probably make him ineligible for a medicare supplement plan.
Midwest, I was under the impression that when you switch Medicare plans during this end of year enrollment period, the changes don't take effect until the following month. With my partner gone I don't keep up With it like I used to so perhaps I am mistaken.
But a few things I know I am not mistaken about is just about everything Singer just said. As usual...what a complete idiot. I may or may not address a few when I get home. Can't decide if I want to bother.
Medicare supplement plans are open for enrollment into whether a person is sickly with major problems or as healthy as a robot. I'm wondering why mickey would even bother with something like that. He'd be paying more for treatment and care that costs him nothing now.
Kew, we already know you can't help yourself when it comes to things that expose your idiocy. Now you're trying to portray being an expert in the field of medical care and coverage because you have a bad ticker and infected blood, and because you say you sat by the side of some other dying homo.
So I say GO AHEAD--SPEW MORE OF YOUR INEXPERIENCED IGNORANCE! display even more of your weakness. waaa....waaa
If Mickey signs up for a medicare advantage plan during the open enrollment period now thru Dec 7th, the insurance won't take effect until Jan 1, 2020. You can sign up for a medicare supplement plan at anytime during the year, but if you don't do it during I believe the first 6 months when you turn 65 you have to pass underwriting. There are a few exceptions to this general rule.
KJ, the fact you had to pay some small amounts for you partner was probably because you had a less expensive plan that had co-pays. Plan F was the best and most comprehensive plan, but you can no longer get it unless you were grandfathered in. The second best plan is Plan G which I suggest you get for your mother.

Rob You are so fucking retarded, you really are. In your haste to find something to argue about, you either didn't read or couldn't understand what I said, because you argued the same point I made. In post #31, I said "Medicare actually pays 80% of what they (Medicare) assigns for an Xray, but let's not get into that right now". You come back and argue that Medicare only pays 80% of what they contract with. THAT is exactly what I said. Only difference is I used the correct terminology. The term is assignment. Medicare assigns an amount that they will pay for each procedure. That is THEIR word, used throughout the Medicare books.
Now let's talk about this quote "which as a previously healthy person mickey certainly would not get". Maybe one of the dumbest things you have ever said. Do you know what Insurance is? Do you understand the concept of insurance. It is protection for when you aren't healthy. It is usually naïve young people that think like the quote you just made.
Rob the fact is you are wrong about almost everything you say, on almost every topic. I mean I don't even know how a person can be as wrong as often as you are. You are clearly the dumbest fuck, not only on this site, but that I have encountered on the internet anywhere....and THAT is saying something. You like to tell us all how educated you are, and maybe you are, maybe you aren't. One of the colleges you have mentioned has no record of anyone with your name. But whatever. Maybe you were educated 50 years ago when you were in your 20's, but now at age 70, you are just plan dumb and wrong about almost every single thing you say. I don't know what to tell you. Just in case you have forgotten what people think of you, here are a couple little reminders:
https://vegascasinotalk.com/forum/sh...le-up-bug-poll
https://vegascasinotalk.com/forum/sh...ems-claim-poll
And by the way, I said you have been wrong about almost everything you say. You know why I say "almost"? I can think of one thing you have talked about that you really seem to know the subject matter and that is when you accuse different people of being on different welfare programs trying to put them down. I mean, you might be wrong about that too, but I just don't have any knowledge of that, but you sure seem to.
So this is day 4 since Mickey's ICU tweet. :( I was really hoping we might hear something today. I am still holding out hope that maybe he is still in ICU, where some places they don't let you have electronics in ICU, or that maybe he is recovering from successful surgery and tweeting and posting is the last thing on his mind.
While I am still hoping for the best, no matter what, this has been another of those reminders that life is just too short and you never know how much time you have left. I am just not going to waste any more time on these troll / hater / negative people like Singer and Blackhole. Life really is too short for this crap.
KewlJ, I also hope that Mickey is all right.... :/ The thing is, Mickey said that the heart attack doctor thing is the first time he had been to a doctor in 66 years. That may seem like a very sweet life but really he should have been doing yearly checkups just to make sure everything was running smoothly. His heart attack could have been prevented or anticipated had he been doing yearly checkups.
Mickey has lived an alternative style life than what most of us would consider commonplace. I don't think he has ever held a job for very long, instead choosing to move on constantly. He's hitchhiked, hopped trains, etc. in order to get around, and gambling has always been an interest to him. He said that for years he'd close bars down, which he laughed about on GWAE saying how Vegas bars just don't close. He is also a smoker--as are/were many from the babyboomer era--who I don't believed had stopped at the time of his attack. His having no health issues up to this point is truly amazing. I'm four years older than him and I also have had no health issues up to this point other than the foot I broke recently while acting foolish. But I've regularly been for physicals throughout my life, I've never smoked, I've always drank very little alcohol, and I've continuously kept myself in shape. So for the run mickey's had, I'd say his overall health-rating index has been higher than even mine.
I'm sure he's doing OK. The fact that he had the attack then could tweet from the ICU means a lot. Who knows what's going on in there right now, or even if he's been moved. It's not like he has family members who would bother contacting any of us on his progress.
It's been 4 damn days. Let the man rest and recover. The guy had a heart attack for crying out loud, not some minor muscle cramp. He'll come back when he's ready.
In the meantime, we can watch as kew spews lie after lie after lie....all while pretending to know it all because his homo friend died of aids. Yes I checked it out, so lift your mouth back up kew.
I have a 2020 Medicare book right here kew, do you? They send them out to all 65-and-overs. Maybe your mommy who pays all your bills has one? The word most used is CONTRACTED. You are as dumb as any Democrat.
What's worse....you already know your extraordinary level of shame on every forum your ever been on and banned from. What actually happens is the more you say the more foolish you look. Your house of cards came crashing down long ago, and you seem to like taking direct hits for all your sissified whining and pathetic desperate bs. Your M.O. is well known: the more a critic nails you the more he/she/it bothers you....and the more lies and nonsense you line up. The main reason you hate me is because you just can't take someone actually exposing you for the liar and fraud you really are and have been since you began to believe you could mitigate a meaningless, useless failure of a real life with the creation you've concocted online. I suggest you meet with people who challenge you if you ever want to begin to dig your way out.
And this is how dumb and stupid kew truly is. He thinks mickey's as dumb as him. He believes a person WHO HAS NEVER BEEN TO A DOCTOR would sign up and pay for a Medicare plan supplement that covers co-pays and deductibles. What an idiot.
Pay attention: Wise Up.
What kind of Las Vegas forum is this?
It's whatever kind of forum kew wants it to be, because he's the original walking wounded fairy who was tossed like yesterday's garbage from WoV, and he will forever be embarrassed that those people want nothing to do with the little twit any longer.
Come to think of it....here he is, posting constantly after probably a dozen times proclaiming "I'm gone and done forever with this forum because I can't take it when people question my claims, argue with me, or don't believe in EVERY LITTLE THING I say!"
This is exactly why he goes on and on and on with his lies and make believe internet life, and why he's blocked out what a real life loser he is. Think about it. Who in their right mind thinks claiming to be a "bj pro" has any dignity whatsoever "assigned" :) to it? Only a low level, going nowhere type ofperson would think that has any type of success associated with it. And it sure sounds like such a wonderful life in retirement---if his infections allow him to see anything near 45, that is.
Meanwhile, I enjoy mocking everything about him and he knows it. Imagine a life like his.
While it's undeniable that kew will have more of his signature hissy fits over me, I'll laugh when he does it and will now revert back to what the only concern in this thread really is about: how mickey is doing. I just called him again and it went straight to voicemail. He hasn't posted or liked on twitter since his announcement. My belief is that since his communications are important to him and he's been silent, he's either unable or not allowed to use his cell phone, for whatever reason. I hope to hear something soon.
Kew we know you don't like mickey because he won't let you control how and what he believes and says, and he's not stupid enuf to buy any of your constant flow of bs. So go ahead and display how you just can't take a verbal lashing, and take a swing at me with a helmet. My feeling is I've ridiculed you enuf in this thread, so don't bother asking any questions. It's back to being all about mickey.
Rob, I admire you, but let's be honest. KJ and MC were simpatico until the merger. So, please, do not implicate that one individual wants to strongly influence the other. KJ started a thread on behalf of MC. I do not believe that KJ does not like MC.
Thank you Deech. This is Rob Singer proving what a low life he is. Proving there is no level he will not sink to. I have always like Mickeycrimm, from when I first encountered him at WoV. I really don't think we had much interaction at WoV as things Mickey would talk about were far beyond my knowledge, so I don't think I joined in any of mickeys machine AP discussions. Just tried to absorb and learn. I did voice my displeasure then Mickey was banned from WoV. While Mickey's posting while intoxicated was surely problematic, for any forum, because of Mickey's very unique expertise, I thought every effort should be made to keep him on board and allowed to participate, for which so many members benefits. And I didn't and still don't feel every effort was made.
Specifically there was an offer by one of the mods to have Mickey's nighttime posts (which were the problem time), put on a delay, until they could be reviewed and approved by that Moderator. Wizard nixed that saying he couldn't allow that kind of special treatment. But it was the moderator who made the offer that would be inconvenienced, not Wizard. There was no reason that solution couldn't and shouldn't have been at least attempted to keep such a valuable, expert member on the forum. One of Wizards great faults is his inflexibility.
Going forward, after the incident at WoV that lead to my banning where Norm Wattenberger (QFIT) showed up demanding and manipulating Mike to ban me, Mickey created an account at Norm's blackjack site, of which Mickey had no interest in, and as only Mickey could do, in no uncertain terms told Norm exactly what he thought of him and of course was immediately banned. I neither solicited nor expected that support from Mickey, but I will admit, I rather enjoyed seeing Mickey take down Norm as only Mickey can.
I next encountered Mickey at Gambling Forums. And while Mickey and my advantage play career, are about as different as could be, we both seemed to agree on almost everything, especially who we found credible and not. I always say "it isn't that hard to tell" and real AP know almost immediately who is legit and who is shoveling BS. When Gambling Forums imploded, at least as far as credibility with the owner having been proven to create sock puppets, most of the legit AP members left. Mickey contacted me privately and suggested I come here. Damn that Mickey.....that I wish he had never suggested. lol.
Now earlier this year Rob and Mickey called a truce to their apparently decades of trolling and attacking each other and that is fine. At that time Mickey decided he found Rob credible on his "double up bug claim". I and 95% of the others (according to the poll) have seen nothing that would lead me to find Rob's claim credible and based on Decades of his lying about every other claim, I just don't see it. It is no secret that Mickey and I disagree about Rob's credibility on this issue.
But for Rob to say I don't like Mickey is outrageous. Proving their is no level that this piece of shit Rob Singer won't sink to. He is a sick, sick, bitter old dude.
I continue to like Mickey and have the greatest respect for his AP ability, even as I don't understand most of it. On a personal level, I have the greatest respect for what Mickey did in turning his life around, giving up drinking after a life of alcoholism. I have always said, Mickey's story should be in a book. That is the stuff of a real advantage player turning the tables on the casino industry. Thank god Mickey at least got the platform to share some of that story with multiple interviews on Gambling with an Edge.
And now as we wrap up 5 days since Mickey was last heard from, I continue to pray and hope for the best. But one thing I know, if it doesn't work out that way, the person we know as Mickeycrimm, lived life on his terms. And that would include the end (if it is to be).
I just caught a little of the kew attempt at more face-saving above. Hilarious! Now nothing but hearts and flowers and praise along with "beautiful kind thoughts" for mickey....thinking he's completely fooled everybody after his vicious and slanderous attacks on the guy for believing in the single greatest thing I've done in gambling, and thoroughly explaining why---which as we all know does not agree with the "everything anti-Singer" narrative of kew, which of course is only the devastating result of how phony I see him as.
You're caught in the act and in yet another lie again, idiot.
Kew's an internet geek deech, and he knows that by purporting to be sympathetic to a fallen enemy, he might gain back a few of those who've had enough of his forum antics. He acts like this "merger" is the result of a conspiracy against him, when it's simply Mickey making up his mind after carefully analyzing all the current and historical facts. Kew will turn on ANYBODY who agrees with me on anything, simply because I've put a whole lotta hurt in him. He is the lowest form of life in this world.
You should probably make another thread for your bickering Rob. Do you really think this thread is the place for it?
It's been 5 days and with each passing day the speculation of what happened is getting grimmer. Maybe there could actually be a thread without a shit ton of personal attacks in it.
Lord willing, MC will be back to kicking ass and stomping mud-holes in no time.
May I be optimistic? I don't think cell phones are permitted and if the battery was not recharged all calls would automatically go to voicemail. My suggestion would be that anyone who has Mr Crimm's phone number should text him because he's likely to see text messages before going thru voice messages.
I called this afternoon and this time it went straight to voice mail. :(
This shit is not looking good. I think most people who wind up having open heart surgery only spend a day or two in ICU and a week or week and a half in the hospital. I'm no expert though.
My father in law had a heart attack in which he flat lined and they had to paddle him back 3 times. They put a couple stents in and he was back at it 3 days later.
If we don't hear anything in a while I'll still remain hopeful that he decided to fake his own death do the some extraordinarily good play.
Unfortunately I am an expert with open heart surgery, having had two already and I will require another in 25 years, although I am hoping there will be advances that allow for something less invasive. They get you up and moving that same day and it is now like 3-4 days in the hospital and they push you out.
Heart surgery patients do need help and support at home for a couple weeks and if you are a person that lives alone and doesn't have anyone to help you, you will go to a rehab facility first for probably a week or so. That is kind of what I thought we might hear about Mickey. And maybe it still will be. Maybe he just hasn't felt up to, or felt the need to post or tweet during what is a pretty intense time. Maybe he is focused on what he should be focused on and we will still hear from him at some point. That is my positive thought.
I sent him a text last night, but when he re-appears it'll probably be the same way he began--with a tweet.
I avoided posting on this thread because it has become a garbage dump. Those of us who know and love Mick have reached out to him and are worried for him. And Rob I know you are included because the man never shared his contact info with most unless he respected you.
Hopefully this is a small bump in his road.
Love and miss you Mick.
Mickey just tweeted that he's still breathing.
Glad to hear it. Thought he was a goner for sure.
Hang in there Mickey. We'll keep the machines warm for you.:D
Glad that Mickey is alive! :D :D What a huge relief! :D
Great news. Hoping there is more to come soon.
Mickey's latest tweet says "zooming up and down the halls with a walker. Retiring from full-time play".
Go get em Mickey!
The walker comment may mean that he is recovering from heart surgery. Speculation, but consistent with that. Maybe Mickey will be here soon sharing some of this journey. Or maybe he will chose not to. As a fellow heart surgery comrade I am interested to hear other war stories.
AS for retiring from Full-time play. That seems carefully worded. Like he will be cutting back. From his most enjoyable travel thread, it seems like he has really been racking up the hours and miles the past couple of years, so slowing down and enjoying life might be just the ticket.
Continued best wishes on your recovery Mickey.
On WOV, they said that what Mickey is doing after a heart attack is not a good sign. "Zooming up and down the halls with a walker," I guess maybe Mickey should be lying in bed for the most part after such a serious thing as a heart attack, not zooming, but I will admit that the thought of Mickey zooming up amd down halls does make me smile.:)
Those comments at WoV are absolutely 100% wrong. I am guessing those making the comments never had open heart surgery (and wouldn't wish it on them). One commentor did say he knew someone that had it 20 years ago. Things have changed a lot in 20 years, including post surgical plans. Now a-days they get you up and walking (just a couple steps) the same day you had surgery.
The "zooming up and down the hall" is usually about a 3 or 4th day after surgery time frame, although, I really shouldn't say "usually", because each patient is different and responds differently. Since Mickey's "zooming" comment was 9 days after his ICU tweet the timing seems a little off, but we really don't know exactly when or even if he had surgery. Perhaps there was a delay of several days for some reason. I will be interested to hear Mickey's timeline and war stories.
Mickey's "zooming" comment did bring back a memory for me that made me chuckle. I forget if it was my first or second day after surgery. I think the first day I might have just walked across the room several times so maybe it was the two days after surgery. It was my first day of walking the hall. And I can tell you I wasn't "zooming" that first day. I was playing the part of the turtle. Every step slow, methodical and painful. But there was an old fellow, probably 80 that was quite a number of days removed from his heart surgery (it was the cardiac Unit), and boy he was "zooming". He barked at me to get out of his way. "Something like move a side sonny". I didn't think it all that humorous at the time though.
Recovery from heart surgery depends on many things and there can be set backs. 2 days after going home, I was back at a cardiac rehab facility for a couple days with a set back. Everybody is different. But the best results are those that take it very seriously, work hard through rehab and fight through the pain and discomfort to get back. And while I don't know Mickey personally, from what I do know of him, I would bet he will that is exactly what he will do. He will fight like hell to get his life back. I wish him well.
You always seem to make any and every person's personal situation all about you.
Have some respect kew....stop thinking anyone cares even the slightest about what you have to say.
Shut the fuck up Rob. Stop being so hateful with every topic.
This thread isn't about me it is about Mickey. But I can share my experience going thru similar.
I appreciate someone with firsthand experience filling in the details.
A lot depends upon the damage to the heart. if you go in for a by-pass or stent before having had a heart attack, your recovery and your post-op will be different than if you had a heart attack and suffered some damage. For example, Kewl didn't have a heart attack before his procedure (if I recall), and probably was up and moving fairly quickly. After a stent you walk out of the hospital and begin exercise the next day. After by-pass, they try to get you up and moving the next day or at worst 2 days. Actual rehab is a few weeks later. It also differs based upon your general health and fitness of course. I will assume that Mickey had some degree of damage or he would have been up and around sooner. Either way, rehab and what you put into it is of the utmost importance. Mickey being a tough guy will hopefully kick ass.
My Dad had a QUINTUPLE bypass in his 70's! The second day he was hugging the teddy bear. The third day he was zooming up and down the hall and since he had a monitor they came looking for him and told him he might take a break. "Why? I wanna go home." He was a tough WWII vet.
