Quick Note for Todd

Hey Mickey...you travel the land and probably visit a larger variety of casinos than any of us, so I guess you're in the best position to answer a question.

When covid hit casinos went to non-smoking.

Now things have relaxed, but not gone back quite to how it once was; back then the main floor allowed smoking but there usually a non-smoking section: now it seems to have flip-flopped, at least in the few tribal joints in the PNW I frequent, such that typically the main floor is non-smoking and smokers stay in the small area, if smoking is allowed anywhere at all.

Shit holes like Lucky Eagle allow smoking in the main casino; Ilani prohibits it anywhere on the casino floor.

My question: what are you seeing in the hundreds of joints you stop at?

Don't remember which ones were smoking pre covid that went non-smoking. But here's the list of smokefree casinos in U. S.

Sure smokers like to gamble but do smokers who like to gamble have much money vs others ?

Seems maybe the results have shown something.

I would think it's more about spending habits. Probably safe to assume smokers are more prone to taking risks than non. But the reality is smoking has declined massively and complaints from the ever growing non-smoking customer base had to be addressed.

My thoughts are more that the smokers just don't have as much money. When I think of wealthy people I can't think of a smoker. All the smokers I know are middle-class if not lower. That is just my thoughts though.. I looked for some research as I'm curious.

So yea, with smokers you get 2x the gambling addiction level but 1/20th the money to chunk off. Who knows .. And there are a lot of people (like myself) who just hate smoke but have learned to deal with it. Not everyone is ok to lose thousands smelling like a bar.

The pack a day crowd is at the locals joint thats attached to that convenience store. You know the one .. yea

Anyway - my main point is that it wouldn't be surprising if the levels of smoking areas didn't come back as strong. A lot of these things is to just overcome the initial reaction and if they got past that already ...

Yes, it all makes sense until you get to Nevada. Nevada remained steadfastly almost 100% smoking in the slot areas, with no end in sight today. Even during the mask mandates, smoking was still encouraged. There has been somewhat of a shift away from table game smoking, but I don't know the proportions. Possibly that was inevitable anyway.

In the civilized world, major operators are now voluntarily smoke-free with no apparent regrets. Foxwoods and Mohegan in CT. Soaring Eagle in MI. Yaamava in CA.

But they seem a little ashamed of it. In my experience, it's hard to find smoking policy on casino websites.

Off topic a bit but I just don't understand why anyone wants to smoke actual cigarettes anymore?? Vaping is far less obnoxious to others, tastes infinitely better and can pack an even higher nicotine punch. Granted the health risks are still somewhat unknown but I think the smart money is on vaping is probably safer.

On some level - until the weather is bad some smokers actually want to have to go outside.

I wonder how much is tied into the level of air-filtration installed. There is also that. Perhaps the cost is significant. Then you have employee health issues.

I've been in a bar and seen some kid just make a huge smoke cloud around himself. Likely he has a shitty diesel truck too.

Those things. I had friends who would have them around. The sugar taste it left behind was a bit disturbing but the high is great if you don't use them otherwise.

I started to realize I felt ill for some time after that. Just this low level icky feeling so I cut even that out.

Then there was the time I briefly took up dipping. I fell asleep with some in my mouth once. Woke up and had the most violent pukes of my life. I believe that was the end of that.

The best way to be a perpetual and annoying whiner about your bad health if you're lucky enough to reach 60, is to have habitually put any type of smoke in your lungs and/or tobacco into your mouth during the years you mistakenly believed you were invincible.

My grandfather must have been a Mensa member, given the fact he smoked two to three packs of unfiltered Chesterfield cigarettss a day and lived a healthy life til his death at about 88 years old: he never got lung cancer, COPD or a smoking-releated illntess.

Go figure.

I am a non smoker, so I don't always notice tends in the smoking/ non smoking sections. But in a visit to Wind Creek casino in Bethlehem Pa (formerly Sands), I couldnt help but notice an increase in the smoking area from my last visit last year. They have increased from about a quarter of the casino to about half, which would be bucking the trend described here.

A further decline in customers was also apparent at least on that day. That decline has been dramatic from the takeover of Sands by the Indians, through the covid period and seems to continue to be declining.

If not for a substantial Chinese customer base busing in from NYC daily, I don't think this place could remain in business.

It's inevitable. Whenever someone who smokes cigarettes or weed feels shamed by medical logic, their knee-jerk reaction is to come up with a tale about some smoker they know of or heard of from somewhere, who "bucked the trend" and somehow lived the long life of a Jack LaLanne disciple.
