Are you not falling into the same simplistic reasoning as MC? That nothingness or emptiness is freedom or free will, opposed to matter or stuff being bound. Sometimes, it's better to be caught up in something than to be on the outside, and looking in. Will is another sort of physical or mental process, and so involves both the physical/mental stuff, and the space/time in which it circulates, neither of which is mutually exclusive of the other here.
In any event, for every bit of determinism of say and do, I think that there is a corresponding bit in the free sense, with one "beneath" the other. The greater question is where the two exactly meet. It's a lot harder to define even just the nothingness, and madness or insanity than we think. The reason there are so few truly-mad geniuses when it's all put together.
