A skipper is a malfunctioning machine that when you inert a coin(s), it thinks you have put in more than you actually have. Usually, the faster you feed in the coins the more confused the machine became(its known as fast-feeding) it was possible to feed in just 2 coins to get a 5 coin hand. Sometimes a 3rd coin would actually confuse the machine into thinking you put in many extra coins and it would kick out what it thought you put in extra. No, they didnt just fall through to the coin tray... if you did it fast enough.
Again, this was a fairly rare event. I cant even count the many thousand of machines over many years I and my partners played while hand feeding, and in that time, over many years I only came across 3. They wouldn't last long, perhaps a week at the most. Even then, you were limited to only a few hopper fills per shift. A fill was normally between $200 and $500. Interesting note: El Cortez only filled their quarter machines with $50 in fear of over payers and other problems.
Fills were logged on a fill sheet/book inside the machine. Each casino had their own fill rules (ussully 3 per shift) before they would do a fill check. Obviously, a skipper wouldn't show up on a fill test, however, an unusual amount of fills would eventually get someones attention before they shut it down and called a tech. If you got lucky enough to find a machine with a high enough denomination you would never need to take a fill and you could just free-roll hand-pays. Eventually someone would take notice and shut it down.
Skipper is an unusual word to use for getting extra credits. I think a skipper might better describe a machine that failed to register coins -- skipping the coins fed in.

I came to Vegas for retirement. I'm almost 67, collecting two pensions, and doing a small amount of TV work. Frankly I'm bored here. I never met any lady here I wanted to date more than once, and there's nothing keeping me here. The downside of moving back to California is the cost of living and a huge state tax bite. My suspicion is that blackhole and the other anti-APs get particularly active after they peruse their year-end casino summaries. LOL.
