Yes Italy overreacted and their economy will pay for it for years. The world goes on and all they did was hurt hard working citizens.

there are exceptions, of course, but liberals generally favor strong regulation of corporate entities and conservatives generally favor weak regulation

If I recall I’m pretty sure it was Clinton era when they went a little overboard on deregulation, spiraled out of control under Bush obviously then Obama had a rather easy job in improving the economy somewhat in his first 4 years because it’s the only direction it could go really. Clinton was alright for a dem overall though.

mcap, how is it that you can have the political savvy to correctly remember that Bill Clinton did indeed participate in the deregulation that eventually culminated in the 2008/2009 crash, but don't actually remember what happened during that crash. There was not only one way for that economy to go and it was sinking fast. A depression was debated as whether it was probable or merely possible. The turnaround certainly was not easy. Today a stimulus package is widely recognized as necessary to help the economy. Then, both Bush and Obama had to fight for it. Fortunately a compromise was made and enough money got funneled in to fund a slow recovery, which was still better than what most of the rest of the world was experiencing.

I appreciate your take on the lack of testing. It seems that a lot of people spend there energy refusing to engage facts and finding someone convenient to blame when they finally do. I wish we acted like South Korea. Test, recognize the extent of the problem, and introduce rational and effective interventions. We are one of the worst at testing and are still largely flying blind. Even though it isn't convenient for you, you're willing to testify to what you see.

I think that this does hurt Trump's reelection chances. To be fair, though, even if Trump or any other sitting President had enacted a South Korea type response, the things out of his control would still hurt the economy and hence his reelection chances. Americans give Presidents too much credit and blame.

I realize that your angry about these events. Rest assured that I am not happy about them either. I only have a small pension and my 401K is in mostly in the market. I would have lost money under any administration, but every misstep cost me more. I also love to travel. We're actually all harmed by this and I don't know anyone who is celebrating.
Anyway... just wanted to give you some due credit, while reminding you of what the start of that recession was really like.

Thanks for the compliment Wasila. I wasn’t old enough to vote during Clinton years or Bush’s first term, just what I remember reading/recalling at the time, and my interpretation of it. My interpretation of most of the first Obama term was that it felt like artificial gains to me, I didn’t have an education or much job skills and the type of entry level low pay factory jobs I was able to get were horrible. It didn’t feel like things were actually better to me, felt like they bailed out the people responsible for it and the rest were left to pull themselves up by their bootstraps. That’s what it felt like from my perspective. Last half of his first term I was doing real estate foreclosure valuations for a foreclosure broker representing banks. It appeared from my perspective that both the banks and consumers shared responsibility for the real estate fall. Those loans and assumptions appeared irresponsible on both ends. In my youth it felt like I was being punished for both consumers and businesses recklessness. The biggest learning experience trying to find my way in it instilled in me the obvious need to build sufficient emergency funds and not voluntarily live month to month with finances.

It seemed obvious to me when the recovery appeared real, late 2011 into 2012 i went from routinely turning away some lower paid secondary valuations of properties held by other brokers I simply couldn’t complete in 40 hours to having maybe 20-25 hours a week of work to do. Was obvious it was time to find a new field or move into different area of real estate.

That’s just how I recall that whole period through the lens of my experiences. I’m not a republican I just generally consider them lesser evil than democrats at least as far as being able to have the option to hold onto what I’ve earned. I would consider myself libertarian. There’s some things I liked about a couple of the D candidates that fell out of the race relatively early, hate all of the remaining Biden/Lizzie/Bernie/Pete/Klobuchar crew.

If you want anything to be factual when discussing this history you cannot say that what Frank, and Dodd did was irrelevant. They were in charge and calling the shots, while possessing and using all kinds of power, and leverage at the time on the bankers. Take the blinders off, yes the Dem's are the party of regulations, BUT back then, not when it involved miniorities. The words discrimination rang out throughout the party and it was time for payback. Between the lines the bankers were told to play ball with the loans or they were going to be tied up in knots with new but yet unforseen regulations. This is all true so there was plenty of blame to go around. Besides do you think all the bankers were Republicans?

Only things I really know about him was he was an actor, republicans remember him quite fondly, and he was a big part of escalating the drug war and is referenced for in some movies for shady ties to I think Nicaragua at the time.

I was referring to deregulation going “overboard” with Clinton repealing the Glass Seagall act in 1999. He’d be out of office a year later before it could have much effect. Many people think that act made the ‘08 crisis a possibility. Prevented any regulation of junk derivatives, allowed large banks and insurance companies to merger.

there are lots of exceptions - but the greater point is that conservatives are the party that believes in lax or little regulation of corporate entitiies

conservatives, for example Fundamentalists, (some), believe that porn should not be legal - that doesn't mean that conservatives are anti-business

it's a gigantic world - not everything is going to fit into a pigeonhole

Interesting story about this. In the 90s I worked in banking and actually worked for Citibank when they merged with Travelers Insurance in 1998.

In our company news letter there was a CEO Q & A and a question for the CEO asking how is the merger going to get approved since the Glass Steagall act prevents that? That was the first time it really hit me that the government doesn’t really work for the people, it works for corporations. Heck government and corporations are essentially the same as its usually the same people moving back and forth from public to private sector that are the ones developing policy.

I have a confession to make. From early January until I got home from Vegas, I had been traveling a lot and had only spent a couple weeks at home. I had consumed a lot less news than usual. One of the things that I missed completely was the explanation that Trump was referring to politicizing when he said it was their new hoax. When Mickey claimed that Trump didn't call the Coronavirus a Democratic hoax, I thought he was shamelessly lying about something that was beyond dispute. I looked up the SC rally to be sure. The site I got had to have been spliced together, because it condensed the words into back to back sentences while deleting close to a minute of what was said in between. So when I responded to Mickey, I mischaracterized Trump's statement as a sentence, which it was not. I also characterized it as only interpretable in the way I saw it, and that is not true. When I went back to get a link that Mickey requested, I discovered the fuller version. I still didn't see how that changed anything. Eventually, I got to a fact check site, that explained what I assume is Mickey's position. It made sense. I am puzzled as to why no one on this board, didn't just say that Trump meant the politicizing and you're missing a minute of the rally. What I did was my fault. It just seems that some of you would have enjoyed supplementing the name calling with something more substantial.

So when I responded to Mickey, I mischaracterized Trump's statement as a sentence, which it was not. I also characterized it as only interpretable in the way I saw it, and that is not true. When I went back to get a link that Mickey requested, I discovered the fuller version. I still didn't see how that changed anything. Eventually, I got to a fact check site, that explained what I assume is Mickey's position. It made sense. I am puzzled as to why no one on this board, didn't just say that Trump meant the politicizing and you're missing a minute of the rally. What I did was my fault. It just seems that some of you would have enjoyed supplementing the name calling with something more substantial.

I will never pick sides in a political fray on this forum. For some reason, I spent over an hour early this morning to understand what exactly was said in President Trump's speech at the South Carolina rally. I read Vox, Business Insider, and National Review. I went to Media Bias Fact Check to understand the political slant of these magazines/websites. Holy mackerel, I would rather write a thesis on mathematical probability.

Anyhow, the safest venue, for me, was to go to snopes and get the speech, word for word. Like myself, President Trump will start with a comment, go sideways, and then come back to finish his thoughts as if the audience knew the route he was taking. The key phrase was, "And this is their new hoax." The word, "their" refers to the Democrats and not the Coronavirus.

This is why I personally do not rely on one news organization to get basic information. Whether I read an article from National Review, Boston Globe, Washington Post, or watch CNN or Fox, it is distratcting when opinions are added. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the discussion this morning and learned quite a bit in my hourlong research to investigate why there are varying opinions on what was said, or meant.

It is another total complete fail in reasoning to think that the free market is going to have a stockpile of nurses and ventilators for a 1 in 100 year event. People complain about the costs NOW.. lol.

I've never been for a fully socialized system of any sort. These things can be done in a hybrid. You don't need to get rid of the private system or even private insurance if people wish to have it. You're likely living off socialized medicine at this point so your opinions don't hold much water at this point.

My basically opinion that as a citizen we should fight against overreach. This is where I separate from run of the mill liberals, because they typically are quick to pass laws. On the other hand, I realize that a free market just degenerates into a society led by money. So in communism, power corrupts. In capitalism, capital corrupts. Politicians are owned by money interests. We've accepted that. It comes from both sides. The one exception here is Bernie. Bernie has a few ideas that I'm not particularly down with, but there will never be a politician I 100% agree with. Perhaps the Green Party. Trump as a leader has no compass. His compass is led by 2-3 things. 2 of them being reelection and the view others have of him. the 3rd thing is the dismantling of anything Obama did.

Look at this airport test thing. There aren't anywhere near the facilities coming into the US needed to give hand sanitizer or masks or anything like that. I don't even think those people are being tested. How can you ramp up such a testing apparatus when no one wants to pay for the stuff beforehand? So now all these people are in 6 hour lines within feet of a dozen people, all coming from overseas where the virus has been more prevalent. Just another fail policy decision. By the time all that shit is straightened out this stuff will be so prevalent across the US no one will care. They'll like have to use mass transit even more now to get to their destination. and that we're discussing this on a thread titled Corona Virus Scam. I hear the virus being called a hoax, so do a lot of other people, some Trump supporters including. I'm conceding that what Trump was referring to is a matter of opinion rather than fact. Others may honestly hear him calling the politicization a hoax. I don't make a habit of rudely calling people liars because they don't share my opinion. I try to reserve that for people who misrepresent the facts. I'm better off not being rude regardless. I'm capable of disagreeing with someone in a much less disagreeable way. I also misrepresented how Trump said what he said. Hence the apology.
