I guess it depends on your measuring stick, but I don't detect operator bloodshed. The US operators (outside Nevada) have consistently generated big profit margins which are now bigger than ever. But technically in some cases the operators may not be "profitable" because of debt loads.

As shown in the second graph, this is largely attributable to FanDuel which individually is now >11%. How do they get 11% when the standard -110 edge is 4.5? Likely suspects are live, in-game betting; and parlays. Margins on same-game parlays "anecdotally approach 20%."

Nevada is still down in the 5s (but with big margins on the dwindling parlay card action). Latest 12-month numbers:



NV mobile sports is only holding 4%. Another LSR article indicates 66% of NV's volume now originates online, although I'm not sure how that squares with those numbers. Nationwide, volume is overwhelmingly online. New Jersey now exceeds 96% online. Eyeballing the NJ data (on another site), hold % appears roughly the same online as retail (b&m).

Those hold %s look roughly the same as today. Horse book win was in the 80s compared to only 30 million this year. Statistically it's not true that we're more obsessed with Race today.

It’s actually best to take your gambling winnings, and invest them into income producing assets that have tax advantages. A good accountant will save you tons. The gambling required a lot of traveling, which translated into lots of expenses. I maintained a full-time rental or leased car during that time, and all my expenses during those years were direct write-off credits to income. This made a huge difference in what I paid in taxes each year. I never explored the possible advantages you mentioned, however, because I was taking guidance from my son-in-law, who is an IRS employee. His suggestions made the yearly filings tolerable.

The few people that I know in similar situations have all been ruled not professional gamblers by the IRS. It is best for a person to not deduct any expenses and just adjust win/loss records accordingly.

Also, filing as a professional gambler comes with a host of problems. The additional 15% self employment tax being the major one.

And since you spend so much time here anyways just out of curiosity why wouldn't you just have a place here or live here permanently? Even though you're a specialist there has to be other obvious in the face good opportunities available on other sports frequently enough to get value out of being here full-time. I wasn't a professional sports bettor and just by chance I would see good situations. I can only imagine if somebody was focused on that type of thing what they could have found.

My wife was employed by the Army as an archaeologist and demographer while she earned a double doctorate from Penn State. Not many "material resource director" positions in Las Vegas.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I had a severe gambling addiction that led to 85% of my annual betting volume being college football and leaving town to be home on Thanksgiving each year. Sounds about right.

Not sure this is the epicenter of culture. Confederate flags abound, and nobody cares if one fills a wiseass's ass with buckshot if they annoy you. You, of course, are always welcome to visit. Asheville, down the road, is considered one of the top 50 towns in which to live in many listings.

If you're a professional gambler that is unincorporated you are filing your wins, losses, and expenses on Schedule C just like any other sole proprietor. You pay 15.3% self employment tax on top of your regular income tax.

If you're not a pro your wins and losses net result will be filed on Schedule A. You are only subject to income tax according to your tax bracket on that. No additional self employment tax. You cannot claim losses until you meet your standard deduction under this scenario. You will not pay self employment tax in addition to income tax under this scenario.

The IRS gets real squirrelly once an individual starts claiming professional and deducting expenses. Especially in a case such as Singer's claim. I have seen the few people that tried what he was claiming he did for ten years denied professional status. A person would only even want to attempt it if they were already maxing out social security anyhow. But most likely in that scenario they would fail to meet IRS qualifications.

There's numerous variables involved based on individual circumstances and it's not as simple as you're saying. Also, your "maxing out on SS comment is unclear". I wasn't receiving it yet during 2000-2009.

I did go thru 2 audits while I was filing schedule C's, and the concern about being denied status never entered into the discussion. No problems were found in either audit other than a minor addition error that netted me an $850 refund check upon completion of the first audit. I attribute all this to the guidance and answered questions I received as I filed.

Most here and you especially don't want to hear this and I'm not gonna argue it further. These audits were both during my DU play years when I was profiting at least $500k/yr. I requested IRS advice and went at it without playing tax games or making multiple passes like most gambling w2g people who file Schedule A's do. The expenses deductions I took were maximized to their furthest limits. Some I had to see the actual provisions in the IRS manuals to believe. The Arizona auditors were not as astute as Nevada's would be at the time due to the comparative numbers of professional gamblers filing, and I used that to my advantage where I could. But by far, the two most overwhelmingly important tactics were: to have detailed and traceable contemporaneous records & numbers from A to Z; and to treat every auditor with respect--no matter how much of an asshole or how frustratingly dense they were.

Finally, with the effects on the large increase to AGI, no matter if losses deducted on schedule A equaled winnings claimed on the 1040--and with that pesky AMT always looming in the background in these types of situations (as well as my being a writer, trainer and consultant) Schedule C was always the most advantageous.

Most here and you especially don't want to hear this and I'm not gonna argue it further. These audits were both during my DU play years when I was profiting at least $500k/yr. I requested IRS advice and went at it without playing tax games or making multiple passes like most gambling w2g people who file Schedule A's do. The expenses deductions I took were maximized to their furthest limits. Some I had to see the actual provisions in the IRS manuals to believe. The Arizona auditors were not as astute as Nevada's would be at the time due to the comparative numbers of professional gamblers filing, and I used that to my advantage where I could. But by far, the two most overwhelmingly important tactics were: to have detailed and traceable contemporaneous records & numbers from A to Z; and to treat every auditor with respect--no matter how much of an asshole or how frustratingly dense they were.

Finally, with the effects on the large increase to AGI, no matter if losses deducted on schedule A equaled winnings claimed on the 1040--and with that pesky AMT always looming in the background in these types of situations (as well as my being a writer, trainer and consultant) Schedule C was always the most advantageous.

Thanks, yes that is correct. Unfortunately I have to file Schedule C and I don't have any reason to itemize deductions anymore at this time so it has been about 7 years since I've had to. Regardless the point regarding Singer's story doesn't make sense and the IRS would not allow what he described to continue much more than a few years. Besides who the hell would want it to when you have to fork over an extra 15%.

Gamblers maintain logs. They can pretty much log whatever they want. The whole US system of taxation related to gambling is a joke. No other country handles it the way we do. But it does allow for the free play train to steam along. If we were like other countries the government would be getting the bulk of money that fuels the free play train.

Are you inviting yourself and others to congregate at Druff's house? He's like a C celebrity. Do you think he wants to expose exactly where he lives?

There is an efficient way of doing things and an inefficient way of doing things. In person interviews are inefficient. For 2 or more people to show up at the same location takes a lot of planning. People have to re-schedule other projects to accommodate the meeting. Time, travel, lodging, scheduling.

Skype was easy to set up. Bob and I communicated thru email. He sent me a phone number to call at a mutually agreed upon time. So I made the call thru Skype and whoopee! We were all on a teleconference. We did the 1 hour interviews then went about our normal business. The interviews took just a couple of hours out of my life, not the several days in person interviews would have taken. If Bob and Richard had demanded in person interviews they wouldn't have gotten 20% of those interviews.

Redietz, please quit trying to do things the hard way. And please quit trying to get others to do things the hard way with you.

Yea a person whose take I respect a ton suggested some time ago that Redietz's desire to know the identity of others is so he can have leverage of some sort. A way for him to get people to shut-up. It isn't for the reasons he expressed. When pressed why to do this he says we might want to be famous but has offered no other excuse.

This is obviously some kind of stall tactic/ way to make it less likely to happen. You are probably well versed in this tactic over the years and understand it well. It's easy to see from reading these forums how many in-person meetups actually take place with certain people, especially when there's some type of challenge or whatever going on. You know darn well that most Advantage players have issues with your identity being given up especially when there's zero value. Oftentimes people think it's Advantage players trying to protect themselves from the casinos knowing their identity but that's not entirely the case it's only part of it.

There are Advantage players who would rather remain as unknown as possible so other Advantage Players don't spot them in casinos and then get nosy and possibly intrude on their play.

Timelines and schedules just don't magically line up and people don't want to spend the cost to have a debate over something that probably isn't going to bear any fruit in the first place. People who love these in-person interviews usually have something to gain or promote. You have something said something like this before, and I have seen it from other people. They are always wanting to get people in a room for some weird reason.

I have not been shy about meeting people in person, I met over 100 people from the forums. I Know Dan isn't shy about meeting people either. If we can get Dan and whoever else to agree. Assuming it's convenient(In Las Vegas) I would be willing to do so if I'm able to invite(and they agree) a professional sports bettor or someone in the industry who has knowledge of sports betting math and some of its history.


This is all assuming nothing comes to light that makes me believe it's a bad idea, while that's rare, I have been in situations where the situation was going to be -EV.

Owning a multi family home or two in all the major gambling markets would be one way to write everything off. It’s not as hard as one thinks to qualify as a real estate professional. One could even use one of those homes as a mail forwarding business. You know for those Times the locals get better mail lol. There’s always levels

The few people that I know in similar situations have all been ruled not professional gamblers by the IRS. It is best for a person to not deduct any expenses and just adjust win/loss records accordingly.

Also, filing as a professional gambler comes with a host of problems. The additional 15% self employment tax being the major one.

I’ve ran multiple business over the years that have utilized 1099 employees you would be amazed how many of them get into tax trouble. Almost all of them would be better off as a W2 employee. I’ve also had competitors utilize 1099 workers to undercut me on certain jobs even tho they don’t meet the criteria to be a 1099.

The main point is if you are making significant money as an AP it’s almost always best to not file a professional if you have the time and expertise to invest in other things. The problem is most of these guys make jack shit, or perhaps don’t have the desire to look into alternatives.

When I hear people like Gina bragging about making mid 6 figures betting sports over 5 years it makes me realize non of these people are really that serious. I never really payed much attention to that until covid. The previous 15 years before that was blur. To busy making money to even think about what everyone else was doing. But whatever at the end of the day if people are happy just making basically minimum wage so be it. Just don’t brag about being some fucking big shot when your not

I'm thinking of cutting back substantially on my gambling, and if that happens I'll likely post less as well; I've posted here in part to help keep the gamblin' juices a-flowin;.

The sad reality is that it is increasingly difficult for me to find the slots I want to play.

Chinook Winds just removed the old three reel mulit-denomination Double Diamond game that I favored, and it won't return.

A slot tech confirmed my suspicion: there's no ready source of replacement parts from IGT so they need to cannibalize existing stock to keep others going as long as possible.

It's been a fun ride while it lasted; I eschew the new games...bah, humbug.

Maybe I'll get back to rolling dem bones again as my main play...nah, probably not.
