There is some truth to what Slap's saying. Many many "locals" play in mostly -EV situations for the comps and card status while claiming to be advantage players. They generally lose their weekly allotment then self-value the extras in order to create a "winning overall" scenario--thus justifying their actual cash losses. These are the degenerates, and there are a good many of them.

As for Slap: he plays very similar to how Alan played--he went in, sat down wherever he felt was lucky, and played. And he had the money to do it, at least until near the end. I suspect his son does also. Not all that different from how MrV says he plays, who says he loses overall but has fun and the money to do it.

Real APs would never consider someone playing for comps an AP. It is clear - they're playing for comps. They can say well this saves me $X and blah blah but regardless real APs will never consider these people APs.

There is considerable truth to what Slap said TBH. Go hang out in a larger casino and get to know the various slot hustlers. They likely don't get into debates online about whether they're an AP or not but they're surely degenerates. Even most APs are degenerates by the definitions of normal society.

However applying that idea to APs universally just strikes me as bitterness of some sort which likely comes from somewhere...

No one here argues that gambling can't be or isn't fun. It might not be fun to someone personally but we all understand in a general sense that it is fun for many.

But ultimately degenerates who hate the idea of people being able to win at casinos are going to use a definition that suits them.

If Slap only played on VP machines that were positive then he'd be an AP and not a particularly degenerate one. It isn't a profession.

If this comment, were made 3-4 years ago and the person making it was unidentified, it might just have been made by Alan. It is the exact kind of thing he would say. Alan was 100% anti-AP....that is to say he didn't like players that played and won by the math. He resented them. I have never given much thought to as whether Slappy is anti-AP, but lets just say, it appears "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree".

Sometimes people ask if I'm an AP. I don't consider myself one. But I'm also not a ploppy or a degenerate. I'm in between.

I will always take shots at +EV opportunities, unless there's too much variance to them. I try to revolve most of my gambling around +EV action or at least something close to 0 EV.

I won't just sit and fire at a known -EV situation for the fun of it, unless it's for very small money. I will, however, take a -EV situation in order to generate comps or status I'm likely to want or need, such as Caesars Diamond. But even there I do it optimally.

The truth is that advantage play is boring and tedious, laced with a few moments of excitement or terror. The variance can also be maddening, even if you stick to good spots. And then there's often travel required if you want to do it seriously.

I have made some friends in the AP world and I enjoy their company, and enjoy having conversations with them in text or whatever. Many people who listen to my PFA show are APs. And when opportunities come up, I'll be playing some of the same things as the APs are. It's just not something I actively do.

There are plenty of examples of degeneracy. Everyone is not created equal. Those that can't stay on the right side of the math are said to have "leaks." Back in the day one of the best slot AP's out there had a problem with horses and dogs. I've known several that once there is a lull in positive plays to be had they can't stay out of action so blow the money off on sucker gambling. It's called "Taking a shot." T.J Cloutier was a great tournament poker player who couldn't stay off the craps table or out of the race book. Consequently, he was always broke. So his buy-ins were paid by backers and his wive gave him an allowance to piss off gambling.

The problem with this statement "Advantage Play is a way for degenerates to justify their degeneracy" is it doesn't make sense. Degenerates don't play with an advantage. They piss their money off to sucker games.

It's been awhile but I used to make 4000 mile laps around the country hitting every casino along the way. We're talking the northwest to the southwest to the south to the midwest to the upper midwest then back to the northwest. There were casinos I didn't find anything so walked right out the door. I go to casinos to make money. No other reason. I don't sucker gamble but everyone else is free to do what they want to do.

They were degenerates that knew some advantage plays. The problem with these types is no win is big enough. They gamble until they are broke. They have no conception of gambling being a tool to create wealth.

There is no doubt that a lot of so called AP’s are degenerates and they fuck things up for for AP’s that are not degenerates.
