The only reason plating will have different colors depends on purity. Then whatever other metals make up the mix. Example being Krugerrands are alloyed with copper giving them a pinkish hue. American eagles are alloyed with silver giving them a brighter whiter finish. Canadian Maples are pure giving them the appearance of natural yellow gold.

If an experienced person could tell an item was plated just by looking at it then gold jewelry buyers wouldn't be spending $30k on x-ray spectrometers.

By the way that Sigma you posted a pic of doesn't perform a density test for verification. You need to upgrade to the Sigma Pro because there's tons of fakes out there that can show good on the original Sigma.....RIP

With a Sigma tester you have to select what you are testing. There are many selections to cover just about any coin and common metal alloys such as Sterling and what not.

The Sigma does not give a composition breakdown. You need an x-ray spectrometer for that.

A Sigma Pro performs a density test by providing a calibrated space to place the item after it is verified to be what you suspect it to be. So only good for coins, small bars and such.

A lot of pawn and coin shops are using Sigmas. The more serious ones use xrf guns. Of course one can always perform old fashioned acid tests but they cause damage to the item in order to collect the sample.

The coin shops have some kind of device they use to test gold.

I have a diamond tester that also detects moissanite, the Sigma tester, and one of the acid gold testers. However, these are mostly toys for me. When I buy a watch or piece of jewelry if I am not buying it from the authorized dealer or a trusted and known dealer, then I have the watch or jewelry examined and authenticated by a known watchmaker or jeweler before I pay for it. I might have the item authenticated anyway no matter where I buy it, partly because if I am insuring it I need an appraisal.

Same as if I buy a piece of art I have it authenticated by an expert.

In any case, the combination of that regular Sigma tester plus weighing the coin and having it come in at its expected weight is enough to authenticate it, but besides that I bought all of those Eagles from trusted and known dealers.

One time I was walking by some pawn shop on or around Fremont street and some guy came up to me with some gold jewelry wanting to sell it. He mentioned a price and I told him that if the pawn shop offered him something for the stuff I'd pay him his price, because it was pretty low. We went into the pawn shop and the pawn shop authenticated all the stuff and offered him a certain amount, I gave him a little more right then and there and we were done.

This is as opposed to the guys you see in downtown L.A. trying to sell jewelry on the street invariably that stuff is not precious metal and is worthless.

I've also been approached fresh off the tables by foreign sounding guys trying to sell a watch, and even from a glance I can tell the watch is fake and at best plated if even plated maybe just gold tone. This happens at more like Station Casinos or Palms, not so much on the Strip at the majors.

Fake gold rings have been a racket in Vegas for years. Some of those gift shops on Fremont would stamp junk rings as 14 carat gold and secretly sell them to street hustlers for $10. The street hustlers would get upwards $50 to $100 for the rings from sucker tourists in the casinos. They played the "I went broke what will you give me for it?" routine. They rubbed cigarette ashes in the stamp so it looked like the ring had been worn.

I knew one hustler, Barry, that had his own 14 carat stamp.

Vegas is the perfect spot for the hustle because the tourists are in town for only a few days.

Try this: a guy and a companion walk into a pawn shop; the guy hands the "gold" watch to the pawn broker, saying "I inherited this and need some money; is it real gold? What will you give me for it?"

That sort of question probably happens all the time.

The broker examines / tests it, openly or not, then tells him whether it's real gold and names his price.

Shop owners become tired of being in the free appraisal business. People have nothing to do lose .. show up wanting free expertise with no intention of selling the item. I'd imagine this is especially true for watches and antiques that have been faked. (vs bars of gold etc that take little to appraise/authenticate)

Most likely the pawn shop owner didn't know that was the reason they were there. It would obviously be silly of MDAWG to say anything other than, 'I am his friend". He surely isn't going to say, "I'm here for the sole purpose to hear your offer to buy this item, so I can knowingly feel confident of the authenticity of these items, when I purchase them outside".

There would be no reason to make it appear anything other than a typical pawn transaction.

Also, Pawn Shops almost always have "wiggle room". So it would have been smart of the guy selling to try to squeeze that number out of Pawn Guy, since MDAWG was at least willing to pay that amount.

In theory, MDAWG could have bought the items outside, went back later that day and made an EZ 10% (Difference between first offer and final offer).

I guess, since you guys put it that way, it could have happened. But shop owners are pretty good at preventing stuff like that from happening. I'm still not buying it. I'm don't think I have ever seen someone on the street selling legit chains. Plus you'd think MDawg wouldn't stop to give someone attempting that the time of day. I know I wouldn't. Because there's at most a 5% chance of it being legit and I wouldn't want to be identified by a street person as having money on my person.

Strong point. Why would you even entertain the idea the jewelry is real? Especially to the extent you follow the guy into a shop. Not so much the shopkeepers interaction is unbelievable but more so Mdawg's. Mdawg seems more than savvy enough to just tell the bum, 'bugger off'.

Right V, all the pawn shop noted was someone walk in to try to sell something. I just stood back and waited while the shop examined and came up with a price. I'd already told the guy that I'd pay him more than whatever the pawn shop offered as long as the stuff was real gold.

There were some diamonds and gems on the jewelry too, but I assumed the pawn shop was going to offer zero towards any of that and the price they offered to pay the guy was well below melt for the precious metal alone. I later had the stuff examined more carefully and all the gems turned out to be genuine too.

These were not chains. I still have all that stuff I got that day. Did I or anyone I know ever wear any of it?

AccountInQuestion I've been around and owned watches and jewelry all my life. I have friends and family in the business. I may not be as good as a professional at judging whether something is genuine, but I'm not that far off either. Yes all those pros test something to make sure, but they already have a good idea just by looking whether something is what it appears to be.

Really, the only risk was if the whole thing was a switch and bait scam, but this guy wasn't like that. He just looked like an average Joe, if I were to guess - trying to come up with money for a gambling fix or to pay the bills after he blew his money gambling. He didn't look rich but he didn't look shabby either. Just maybe a little - desperate.

The thought occurred to me that there could be a switcheroo but the pieces were well used not shiny new, and pretty unique.

Okay so how about this - one time at a watch shop that sold pre-owned pieces (not a pawn shop, a watch shop), I was looking through all his watches and found one that I recognized, a somewhat rare Swiss piece, and I knew it was solid gold too (marked PG on the back).

It was in a tray with some crappy watches all plated. What had happened obviously was the owner had misread it as 14K PG plated gold, but PG alone means plumb gold which means 14K solid). I asked the owner how much, and he came with some pretty high price for a crappy plated watch, but a ridiculously low price for that particular especially solid 14K watch, and I pretended like I was debating, then just handed him the two bills.

The thing was (is, I still have it), worth three thousand easily.

Yes, it's not a watch I ever got around to wearing, but I might give it to someone someday.

AccountInQuestion I've been around and owned watches and jewelry all my life. I have friends and family in the business. I may not be as good as a professional at judging whether something is genuine, but I'm not that far off either. Yes all those pros test something to make sure, but they already have a good idea just by looking whether something is what it appears to be.
