I've never made a Field bet in my life. I was always told it's a bad bet to make. Someone would have to carefully explain it to me.
Per the wiz:
"The Small bet wins if the shooter rolls every total from 2 to 6 before a 7. The Tall bet requires the shooter to roll every total from 8 to 12 before a 7. Both have a probability of winning of 0.026354, or about 1 in 38. There are two known payoffs, as follows:
If wins pay 34 to 1 (or 35 for 1), then the house edge is 7.76%.
If wins pay 30 to 1 (or 31 for 1), then the house edge is 18.30%.
The All bet wins if the shooter rolls every total except a 7 before a 7. It is always offered along with the Small and Tall bets explained above. The probability of winning of 0.005258, or about 1 in 190. There are two known payoffs, as follows:
If wins pay 175 to 1 (or 176 for 1), then the house edge is 7.47%.
If wins pay 150 to 1 (or 151 for 1), then the house edge is 20.61%."
OK, now for the field bet:
"If the field bet pays 2 to 1 on both the 2 and 12, then the house edge is 5.56%.
If the field bet pays 2 to 1 on the 2 and 3 to 1 on the 12, then the house edge is 2.78%.
If the field bet pays 3 to 1 on the 2 and 2 to 1 on the 12, then the house edge is 2.78%.
If the field bet pays 3 to 1 on both the 2 and 12, then the house edge is 0.00%."
Alan, I'd ask you to "do the math" but I fear that would be an exercise in futility.
If you followed the math you'd never set foot on a casino.
To answer MrV:
Red Rock pays double on the field for 2 and 12 but they pay $19 on a $10 bet on 4 and 10 while other casinos pay $18. The place 4 and 10 are not one roll bets.
You just said that were told the field bet was a bad bet so you never bet it. Now you find out what you are now betting on is even worst, and this is how you respond?
How is it that you have played craps for many years, hell, you even got married at a craps table and yet you don't know what the edge is on a bet you think you have an advantage on? How is it that you don't know craps like the back of your hand? You are Mr. 18 yo's in a row for god sakes.
Don't you investigate stuff for articles as a reporter?
Axel I don't care if the field bet is a better bet... not when my $5 bet on the Small or Tall hits and pays $155.
You guys live by the odds. I go by results. I'm hitting the Small and Tall more frequently than 1/30 tries... and sometimes I'm getting the ALL.
Keep telling me the Small and Tall are bad bets when I collect $155. That's exactly what I'd expect you guys who crunch numbers to say.
If you want to criticize craps players, criticize the come bet players who bet FULL odds. The odds have ZERO edge but the shooter has to repeat the number. How often do you see shooters repeat numbers?
What about come bettors who have a passline bet with full odds plus two come bets with full odds? They're the guys who get crushed at a craps table even though the odds have ZERO house edge.
The average shooter just doesn't throw enough numbers to get the repeaters that will make those "zero house edge bets" win. Digest that math.
You have been playing craps for years correct? You have been losing for years correct? I assume the bets you were making before had less than a 7% HA correct? Now you suddenly think you have an advantage on a bet that has an ever bigger HA just because the way they structured the bet and payouts? Do you really think math and odds only apply to some bets and not others?
You said a random roller rolled 18 yo's in a row. IE. shit happens and strange things happen but yet its possible. Yet, you somehow think when strange stuff happens to you, it must be due to skill and not variance?
the lottery is always pointed to by craps [players and roulette players as hope that they will be one of the few that ends up on the positive side over life. But its a poor comparison.
With craps and roulette even on your best, luckiest day you will never win enough money to change your life or wipe out your previous and future losses. You have to have consistent winning streaks in order to offset the expected consistent losing streaks. With the lottery you dont need any winning streaks. You can win enough money to change your life the first time you play. Its a poor comparison when seeking hope for coming out on the positive side over a lifetime of craps , roulette, big wheel, sic bo, red dog,.
Axel wrote " Yet, you somehow think when strange stuff happens to you, it must be due to skill and not variance?"
When did I day that, Axel?
Alan Mendelson "I think I have an edge in craps. How do I determine what it is?
I believe I have an edge when I am the shooter and only bet on my own rolls. I think I have an edge because of the number of rolls I have in each turn and because of the bets I make which are low house edge bets."
Thinking you have an edge on a -EV game would require someone to think they have some type of skill either in the way they bet or they think they can influence the dice with skill or they have some special skill that will outperform the math.
p.s. I wouldn't call a 7% HA a low house edge bet.
You're missing the words "I think." You ignore those words and jump to the conclusion "they have some special skill."
This is typical of the biased discussions on this and other gambling forums.
Screw it. Axel I have no interest in meeting you. You will be biased no matter what happens.
Not only did I question myself by saying "I think" but I also asked for assistance to not only monitor my rolls but for someone to analyze my rolls using their formula or software. But what do I get? I get the usual criticisms from the usual suspects who say the usual things to anyone who is not part of their clique.
Screw all of you, including you MaxPen, RS__, Axel and the rest of you.
I want to thank RS. Previously, I had never heard of the phrase "goat rope." I love it.
P.S. I am not ganging up on Mr. Mendelson. I have heard from various people over the decades that DI was probably more than just a rumor years ago. But then tables were redesigned, and casinos started using significantly different dice from different manufacturers, and DI more or less disappeared. I have no opinion on the matter, as I don't know enough to qualify for having one.
