Just finished watching Licorice Pizza.
I don't really want to review it here because many of you probably haven't seen it yet.
A couple things I can say without spoiling anything.
I feel like the only reason that Cooper Hoffman got the staring role was because of his father.
I suppose Aliana and the Haim family got the role because of Corey??
I'm not sure their looks or their acting skills are good enough but that is up for debate.
When I watch Cooper Hoffman I think about some actors from the 90s and 2000's like Paul Dano and perhaps Michael Pitt so that bothers me a little.
Anyways, decent enough movie for a viewing since Hollywood just doesn't put out good movies these days unless you are into Keanu Reeves and or Super Hero Movies.
It sort of feels like the movie is ripping off the 2009 Film, Adventureland, which is a must watch for me once in awhile because it was filmed at Kennywood.
Tomorrow I plan on watching the new version of Nightmare Alley.
Thanks Monet. Speaking of movies with the word Alley in their title, I watched Gasoline Alley (Bruce Willis straight-to-video) a couple weeks back and it was ok - no reason not to watch it. I agree with regard to Adventureland - great movie, so that is reason enough to watch Licorice Pizza (plus the pinball artwork on the movie poster). The new version of Nightmare Alley - the movie takes on deeper meaning for those of us on the margins (hits very close to home for anyone that has felt dead-ended, marginalized or utterly alone at some point(s) in their life) and it will be easy for me to remember this movie in detail without having to watch it again . . . . Maybe the original version also had those qualities. With regard to the new version - it actually makes me wonder if the writer had personal experiences with dead-endedness. If not they are truly a genius.
I think if you ever have the time and nothing else to watch you should watch the original version since its free on YouTube anyways.
Basically the same story but I think the original story flows better and develops the characters more as they focus on them and the story more so than long winded speeches like the new version.
Both versions conclude with the same clichéd message in the end I just feel that the original black and white version does it better.
You have to give the original more points on the sheer fact that this story was more edgy to tell on the big screen in 1947 compared to 2021.
Since I viewed the original first I was able to easily fill in the gaps that the new version left out.
I was hoping for some new inventive twist at the end but was disappointed.
Obviously, the new version was going for a more dark dramatic approach with the music and cinematography.
But I think it fails in comparison to the story telling of the original which gives us plenty of darkness without the bells and whistles.
Usually the Black and White version wins out when compared to more modern versions but this isn't always the case.
One movie that we recently discussed was Sorcerer 1977 and that movie clearly crushes its original rival The Wages of Fear 1953.
They have been playing this movie on the Retro Channel for a week or so now.
Finally caught it and glad I did.
It reminds me of the style of Fat City (1972) with Stacy Keach.
Probably borrowed some ideas from Cliff Robertson since he wrote, directed and starred in this earlier film.
One of these films tableplay might refer to as a period piece.
It has some slow spots and the film is a bit disjointed but all in all well worth a viewing.
Instead of boxing we dive into the beginning of the Corporate Rodeo World when the NFR was held in Oklahoma before moving to Vegas in 1984/85.
I read about another movie made in 1972 with Richard Widmark called When the Legends Die that deals with the same subject material.
I'll have to dig it up , view it and compare the two.
If you enjoy these two you may also want to check out two others...
The Honkers (1972) James Coburn directed by Steve Ihnat
Junior Bonner (1972) Steve McQueen directed by Sam Peckinpah
Turns out there was a Rodeo Craze in the Movie Industry in 1972.
I have 3 movies to watch now.
There goes my next 7 hours.
J.W. Coop (1971)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_oZuo4jrh0
Not the best quality but Free...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXW7GDvZkM0
Turns out that Junior Bonner with Steve McQueen is on YouTube as well...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOkZoAa9VMc
This one is much more difficult to find.... When the Legend Dies... Only found the Trailer so far.
Being more difficult to find makes me want to watch it more.
Perhaps on Apple TV...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E5egcq7lvY
I'm about 1/3 of the way through my viewing of Licorice Pizza and will try to watch the remainder over the next couple of days. It is a good movie so far and I would describe it thus far as Rushmore meets Dazed and Confused with a dash of Adventureland.
Thanks for the rodeo recos Monet.
Just finished up the Steve McQueen movie Junior Bonner and as usual it seems more about fluff.
Certainly nowhere near as good as JW Coop in my opinion which I relate to much more and seems more realistic about struggle.
Time to watch The Honkers now.
I have a feeling it will be better than Junior Bonner as well.
I enjoy just about any movie with Slim Pickens.
That first Link is pretty bad on Youtube as it appears to be a VCR copy with all the snow.
I found another link on YouTube for the same movie though.
The first minute seems better as in picture quality.
Age Restricted on this site but easily linked to YouTube.
Gonna be much more difficult to find When the Legends Die.
Probably have to buy a DVD.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hfkjhaztnog
I agree about Slim Pickens. Fuck, I even liked the Apple Dumpling Gang. Well I completed my viewing of Licorice Pizza. I have no choice but to give the movie an A+ since pinball figured so prominently. Presumably, the way the movie left off at the end, Gary's pinball business did not fail like the waterbed scheme and he ended up rich with a chain of pinball parlors. They didn't show clear frames of the pinball machines but I recognized a few:
Surfer (Gottlieb)
Space Mission (Williams)
Fireball (Bally).
Thanks again for the reco.
Turns out that you could skip both Junior Bonner and The Honkers.
The Honkers is better than Junior Bonner but neither is as good as JW Coop in my opinion.
As I said before, JW Coop has a similar feel as Fat City.
I enjoy the rawness of the film and storyline.
I feel like JW Coop is focusing on the characters and subject material and the other two films are focusing more on the big named stars.
I'm guessing this is because Cliff Robertson had complete control of the film being the writer, director and star.
Probably too many cooks in the kitchen for the other two movies.
Some interesting facts about the 1947 original.
Tyrone Power, wishing to expand beyond the romantic and swashbuckler roles that brought him to fame, bought the rights to the novel so he could star as the unsavory lead, "The Great Stanton", a scheming carnival barker.
The film premiered in the United States on October 9, 1947, then went into wide release on October 28, 1947, later having six more European releases between November 1947 to May 1954.
To make the film more believable, the producers built a full working carnival on ten acres (40,000 m2) of the 20th Century Fox back lot.
They also hired over 100 sideshow attractions and carnival people to add further authenticity.
Nightmare Alley was somewhat unusual among film noir in having top stars, production staff and a relatively large budget.
Despite a strong promotion campaign, the film was not a financial success upon its original release, due in part to protests against some of the scandalous content.
The film has found acclaim and is regarded as a classic.
(Copied and Pasted from the YouTube Description)
Thanks for the interesting synopsis Monet - sounds like a winner. This one is going to bite deep I can already tell (most APs are carnies without a carnival as you know) - so I will make sure I am in a calm mood before I take my watching.
Currently I am listening to the Rogan podcast with Antonio Garcia Martinez since he was the dude who had his career at Google destroyed by woke, libtard, fascist cunts and I want to hear his story. I think there is supposed to be a Baldwin drop today, but I haven't looked on youtube for it just yet.
A brief word about Licorice Pizza - I'm not clear on how strictly enforced the No Pinball law was in LA prior to it getting rescinded. Probably somewhat enforced, but you could probably play in the back room of Dive bars before the rescinding - speculation on my part. So the film is basically pretty realistic, but there might be some minor liberties taken like the portrayal of super strong enforcement of the No pinball Law (viewed as a form of gambling, hence the restriction).
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/to...-#post-6659050
There is no doubt in my mind that I would fit right in working the degenerate lifestyle as a Carnie.
A week or two ago they had a small carnival outside the Galleria Mall at Sunset.
I was hoping to get some of that good Fried Carnie Food but they had nothing but Cotton Candy and Cracker Jack.
I couldn't get my wife on the Zipper which has to be the oldest Carnival Ride that I can think of and it is always the same name.
They had a lager version of the Salt and Pepper Shakers that holds more people but I couldn't get her on that either.
She wouldn't even ride the swings.
To my surprise, I did get her on the Thunderbolt though.
I don't think she realized that it has some speed to it and that it swings side to side and goes backwards.
Felt good and I kept telling her that these rides break and crash all the time and people get killed riding them lol.
And she went on the Ferris Wheel and Fun House with me.
I wanted to play some games but they were even more of a rip off than the rides so I restrained myself and spent 150 dollars at Famous Dave's Fake Bar-B-Que.
I don't recommend Famous Dave's... I was just being Lazy and I had a 200 dollar promotion credit on one of my credit cards.
The pinball law is sort of interesting.
I remember the bar pinball games and the No Gambling Signs.
Licorice Pizza was good enough in this era of constant bad movies.
As you know, Hollywood has lots its appeal.
Will Smith and all the Gay, Woke, BLM Bullshit has destroyed whatever it once was.
It won't be long before Comedy is outlawed and Comedians are hung.
Thanks for the pictures of those pinball machines.
Very Cool.

One fellow in the Licorice pinball Pinside thread identified an anachronism. Mars Trek (very fun pinball machine), which was made 1977, appeared in Fat Bernie's Pinball Parlor even though the film was set in 1972 Los Angeles. Kind of reminds of how Bally's pinball Nip-It (1973) appeared in Arnold's in the TV series Happy Days (set in the 50's you'll recall) in many of the episodes. But like you said, Licorice Pizza was a rock solid movie and these were trivial inconsistencies (fuck American Graffiti had many 70's pinball machines even though it was set in the 50's - same with Dazed and Confused having pinballs newer than the time setting of the story).
Monet, I'm glad your wife and you enjoyed the carnival. I remember eating at the Famous Dave's in Reno a few times due to its convenience and because of some good coupons (half off or something like that)- I think I ordered the sausage plate on one occasion and a ribs plate on other occasions.
I watched the 1947 version of Nightmare Alley. It was easier to watch than the new one because of the happier ending - which is to say that his wife did not abandon him as in the new movie and it appeared that she would help get him off the bottle and probably out of the geek role (the carnival's boss recognized him eventually which might help him get a different job there as well whereas in the new movie there was no hope for this outcome). No punches were pulled in the new movie and I felt that Bradley's Cooper's character was more evil than Tyrone Power's character (another example of this was that the wealthy mark [and his henchman] was killed by Bradley Cooper's character but not by Tyrone Power's character).
Thanks again for the reco.
Bruce Willis 'stepping away' from acting as he battles aphasia, family announces... RIP.
Interesting take.
I disagree but that's because art is subjective.
I certainly would re-watch the 1947 version and I already have.
I doubt I would re-watch the 2021 version again.
I'm biased toward Noir and the Black and White Era of Films though.
I think the important thing here is being able to watch films and discuss them.
Thanks for keeping this thread alive!
Interesting Fact about Noir and films of the earlier eras.
They never wanted a film to go past 90 minutes.
They had to talk fast to be able to get the film in under that time limit.
I like that style.
Actors in that era knew what they were doing.
They didn't need any tricks.
And they used real guns and real bullets.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n59j_bO_Q2U
Well I suppose in the black and white era people (the film audience that is) were less jaded so there was no need to get people's attention through shock-value (brutally beating to death the mark and then driving over his henchman with a car a few times for example) or having an ending where the main character's future was utterly hopeless.
IMO they were more clever and subtle about getting their point across.
They didn't have to dumb down their audience.
They understood that the audience was able to actually use their brains unlike todays youth.
People actually read books back then which actually makes a difference IMO.
Also things were more censored and this kind of story wasn't particularly celebrated by the mainstream public.
etc. etc.
Yes in many of the movies being made these days there is a lot of dumbing down. However in some contemporary movies like Bladerunner 2049 (I can't wait for the next one in the series), The Prestige and Tenet (both Christopher Nolan movies), the audience is left to sort some things out for themselves. Each era had their different audiences. In the old era you had the Three Stooges audience for example. In the new it would be the equivalent of the Fast and the Furious audience (or the John Wick audience, LOL). To me, the highly melodramatic acting in many of the older films is a form of dumbing down and it is the censorship factor you had mentioned rather than more subtlety which is the larger factor of the two in terms of how points are getting delivered. Below is a trailer of the kind of thing that is most enjoyable for me in any new or old movie - points getting made without a lot of emotion or drama:

I tried to listen to that podcast when it first came out.
I made it about 20 to 30 minutes before I shut it off.
Antonio just struck me the wrong way with his demeanor.
It seemed like it got more flamboyant the more he talked.
And he seemed very wishy washy to me in his thoughts and answers.
Perhaps, you can review it a bit for me to see if it is worth listening to some more.
I didn't make it to the part where they started to talk about Google.
On that note, I highly recommend listening to Joe Rogan's latest guest.
JRE Episode #1800 with Gavin de Becker.
However, you can skip the first and last hour.
I found the most interesting and engaging discussion was from about the 59 minute mark until about the 2:01 minute mark.
They talked about how the Government has controlled human life and society throughout history and they got into the Covid Lockdown Measures.
Thanks for the reco Monet, I look forward to listening to it. There is no need to listen to the Antonio podcast - his demeanor is off-putting as you wrote (braggart know-it-all style), and so I found it hard to listen to even though I got through the entire thing. The main take from his Apple (I mistakenly wrote Google) story (IMHO) was that the woke mob that fired him represented a very small percentage of Apple and that management caved in from the woke pressure even though they (the managers that hired him) were aware of his book prior to his hiring (and it wasn't a problem until the woke mob made it a problem). Antonio went on to say that a lot of these Woke types at Apple eventually get fired since they never do much work, spending too much time on "activism". He then said when he worked at some other large big tech company (I forgot which one) the management said if you're not here to work, there's the door -- this was directed to curtail the lazy behaviors of people that use their "activism" to mask their desire to kick back and not work and Rogan concurred (saying generally, not just at Apple, that they're mostly losers who like to attack successful people - the Twitter mob etc.).
Just finished up my go to double feature.
I highly recommend it when you all have the time to watch.
I have never played serious pocket billiards and I really haven't played for about 25 years.
However, I am really getting into it now along with Bowling.
Good Times.
Up next... California Split.
This should be any Gambler or Poker Players go to movie.

Alright here it is!
This is one Fantastic Western.
"There is a difference between apples and men."
Warning... this movie may make you cry like a little girl.
Bend of the River (1952)

Thanks for the recos Monet. California Split (which I saw a few months back) was fantastic.
I've been wanting to watch this movie for some time now.
Missed it back in the 80's.
Or I watched it and completely forgot everything about it which seems impossible for me.
About to see if this link works for the entire movie.
I'll probably buy the DVD soon enough.
Stealing Cars.
Porsche 911.
Charlie Sheen.
Has to bee good enough to reco without every actually watching the film.
No Man's Land 1987
https://tubitv.com/movies/476692/no-man-s-land
Yup... Really Good Movie.
Combination of Driver 1978 and To Live and Die in LA 1985.
And shades of Wall Street 1987 in the ending.
Of course those three movies are far superior but this is another movie that certainly has high replay value for me.
Some really good lines that I need to work into my daily dialog and some good chase scenes as well.
Honestly, Charlie Sheen and Bruce Willis have to be two of the coolest guys on and off of screen from the 80's
Third quote listed below has to be my favorite.
"She's a good girl with bad habits."
"Lifestyles of the Rich and Aimless."
"Fuck Averages! I'm never going to Jail. I'll tell you that much."
Nice Catch!
I think I seen some arcade games and a pinball machine throughout the movie?
I'm pretty sure Break Point borrowed from this plot/formula.
Did you see Margot??
I had to rewind a few times and pause to enjoy her suit!!
I prefer brunettes but I'd make an exception.
I don't know what more I can ask for in a movie.
80's, Charlie Sheen, Decent Soundtrack, Porsche 911s, Cops and Robbers, memorable quotes... etc etc.
I was highly entertained as it is rare for me to find a movie like this that I never seen, heard of or remembered.
Will watch again.
You can not beat Parlays and you could never beat the Lottery.
This movie has promise but I don't expect anything but disappointment.
It does deserve a mention because of its subject material and based on real life events.
I was very surprised to see Annette Bening doing another movie.
This is not going to be the same Annette Bening from The Grifters.
It's not like we have many good choices for new movies.
I fear that the new Top Gun movie will be too woke for me so I haven't watched it yet.
I probably should see it in the theater as I will enjoy the fighter jet scenes but I'm worried about the storyline and young woke actors.
I must of went to the Luxor IMAX 50 times to watch their Top Gun and that River Rafting Film that they had.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFYqO_jLmA0
Yes, there were arcade games in the movie, for example the outdoor ms. Pacman at the burger joint. Yes Margot was a knockout. It was definitely the Wallstreet character type that Sheen played in No Man's Land and I think, since this movie was made the same year as Wallstreet, that was one reason neither of us had seen (and in my case heard of) this movie before. Thanks for the Jerry & Marge Go Large reco.
No worries.
Not really a reco, more like something that should be on our radar.
So I go back and watch No Man's Land again because I'm sick.
Anyways, two quotes that are really good that I missed.
After Charlie Sheens says his line about a nice girl with some bad habits he immediately says: "Fucking Drugs, I hate 'em".
Now that's funny.
Charlie Sheen denouncing drugs and his hate for them lol.
Next when Bill/Benji finds stolen/used parts they get into some banter.
He says: This ain't exactly Repo Work.
Charlie says:
This ain't exactly work, period!
But it's all part of the fight for truth and justice.
You game?
I love it!
I'm stealing that.
Part of the fight for truth and justice lol.
Yes those were great lines, as they were beginning to form their friendship. Unfortunately I could not give the new Batman movie which I putlockered some days ago a reco because it is too fucking woke, so I understand your concern about the possibility that the new Top Gun movie might be some woke dogshit - once it is available in HD on putlocker I will watch it and find out. I downloaded the new Adam Sandler movie Hustle and will let you know how it is after I watch it.
Boron update:It's best to take these capsules with a meal as they do bother the stomach in some persons such as myself. So far I haven't noticed it helping my shoulder tendonitis a lot yet, but will update accordingly.
Thanks for the update.
We forgot to mention the 10 cent shuffle board bowling game in the bar near the end of the movie.
I'm pretty sure I played that version.
I used to love Adam Sandler.
Unfortunately his movies retorted back to his first movie Going Overboard which was pretty bad.
After he made that incest movie it has pretty much been all downhill as far as quality for him.
Since they gave him 500 Million Dollars to make 4 movies I just think he didn't care about the content.
They paid him so why should he care lol.
As far as Hustle goes it looks like woke garbage to me.
I can't see myself watching it or making it all the way through.
I don't believe, he being Jewish, would marry Queen Latifah or any other black woman.
Therefore, he put her in the movie for clicks and she is a friend of his.
Same goes for Salma Hayek but I can overlook that.
The white/black marriages in current commercials is amazing.
I swear its every commercial these days.
White/Asian makes far more sense.
I didn't realize it had woke shit in it Monet, thanks for letting me know. I just read the headline on putlocker which said he was a down and out basketball talent scout who made a big talent discovery outside the States. I figured it was going to be like that one where Brandon Fraser was a mega-pitcher/hitter in baseball (The Scout) and that down and out scout managed to recruit him from the Mexican bush league he was in. Oh well. I don't think I am going to watch it then.
edit:Anyway, at least Margot really put her tits to work in that zoot suit.
I'm still researching this movie a bit.
You made a good point about how Wall Street eclipsed No Man's Land.
Wall Street hit the theaters about 6 weeks after No Man's Land.
No Man's Land got mixed reviews and of course Wall Street was a Home Run if not a Grand Slam.
A couple notes that I dug up that I found interesting.
I have to go back and watch again as I missed Brad Pitt in this movie.
Turns out he was a waiter in the movie so that makes it easier to find.
1. During filming of the final scene, Charlie Sheen was knocked unconscious when a squib that hardened overnight detonated at the wrong time.
He sustained lacerations to his face and a loss of hearing on one ear that lasted four weeks.
2. Brad Pitt makes his feature film debut in the movie as an extra.
In 2019, Pitt revealed that he was almost fired from the film for trying to ad-lib a line.
Found Him lol... took a little longer than I expected.
He is located right before the Margot Scene at 21:48 in the Film.
You can see him pointing his finger behind Charlie Sheen.
And he says something muffled as he is taking orders at their table.
I suppose he is pouring their champagne as well.
I'm slipping as I missed it on my first two full viewings.
Written by Dick Wolf.
Produced by Ron Howard.
That's pretty darn solid.
Not exactly a Reco but I just had to note the Role Reversal...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMUQCLVVJrU
Monet, thanks for the No Man's Land details. I completely missed Brad Pitt's first role. I did recognize Kevin Bacon in Animal House and John Cusack in Sixteen Candles - but those were easy catches. I don't remember seeing Beyond The Law so thanks for posting about it in this thread. Ok so I watched Hustle. I have no regrets seeing it. I thought it was pretty good. It's too bad about the contrived aspects that have to fit in with Woke Culture, but it doesn't detract that much from the film overall IMHO.
Thanks for reviewing Hustle.
I'm in no hurry to see it but I appreciate your analysis.
Beyond the Law 1993 is an odd movie.
Very silly at times and many things do not add up in the real world.
I do not recommend it as a movie that has replay value.
I only mention it because of Sheen is the undercover cop this time.
But he is very unbelievable as a Biker or a Criminal and no criminal that I know of ever says the word contraband.
That should of got him killed immediately when he says he wants to move contraband lol.
Much of the premise is very weak.
The most believable part of the movie is when he starts out trying to buy drugs and nobody will even give him the time of day let alone sell him drugs.
Whatever, Madsen is more believable as a Biker at least.
I liked him in the Natural until he ran into the wall and died which opens the position for Roy Hobbs lol.
Baseball is rough.
Did I mention this movie?
Did you see this movie?
If not it certainly is good enough to reco and has replay value for me.
Boiler Room 2000
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgCLG4gCAvI
You may have mentioned it in passing, but I can't remember for certain. I saw the movie when it came out and I thought it was excellent. If you haven't seen it already, I would like to recommend the movie Margin Call to you which is another financial markets genre movie.
I did not see Fast Break so thanks for that.
I just bought it for 6 dollars.
I liked the look of the bar in the preview and that era.
Obviously, Gabe is going to carry that movie for me.
I sort of remember Margin Call.
Have to watch it again.
I remember it being good but more of a white collar drama.
Kind of like that movie with Richard Gere... Arbitrage 2012.
Whereas Boiler Room is more on par with my experiences.
I always wanted to run/own a Home Casino near a College Campus like that.
Thanks Monet, I'll watch Arbitrage. I'm glad you will be seeing Fast Break. With regard to Boiler Room, I really thought that Ribisi was going to skyrocket to the top of the A listers after that movie, but it never really happened, although he is earning Big Bucks with the Avatar franchise.
Anyhow, you were absolutely right about the 10c bowling shuffleboard machine scene near the end of No Man's Land. Nowadays they jack you for at least $1.00 per game I think.
I watched Arbitrage and I found it to be entertaining. The person who created the film seems to have a lot of insight into the world of the uber-wealthy, in regards to their lifestyle and value system - but that is just a guess from a lay person. Obviously Black Hole (if he weren't banned) or Cerveza Fria could provide a much more accurate opinion in regards to how spot on the film was. Thanks again for the reco.
The new dinosaur movie: underwhelming.
Not too bad.
Same story as always with Gere.
Screwing around and usually getting away with it.
I suppose with the exception of Unfaithful 2002.
But I guess he finds True Love with Diane Lane 6 years later in Nights in Rodanthe 2008.
I could of been a movie reviewer lol.
I could of been a lot of things.
But all I ever wanted to be was a lazy bum.
And I succeeded for now.
If you want to watch another Gere movie that is somewhat decent you can watch Intersection 1994.
Always the same story with this bastard lol.
In my opinion it is a better flick than the low 5.3 ratings but I may have just been in the mood for that type of movie back in the 90's.
I haven't viewed it for 20 some odd years.
And while we're on it,
How the Fuck did/does everyone love Pretty Woman 1990??
Horrible Movie.
Horrible Message.
Just like that piece of shit Juno.
So I get on a bit of kick because I'm thinking about Diane Lane in the Drive In Movie Scene.
And I think it's in American Graffiti but that's not right as it is in the Outsiders.
So I'm watching that scene with the Karate Kid, Dillon and Lane.
Finish that and I notice a preview of a movie I haven't seen.
Looks like Arbitrage with worse actors and a bad script.
Anyways, if you are hard up and want to watch everything Richard Gere has done here is another movie where he seems to be screwing around.
It has Dakota Fanning in it who seems to be making a comeback as she is teaming up with Washington to make the Equalizer 3.
Always the same shit with this guy lol... rich guy, car crash, screwing women... etc. etc.
I suppose it could be worse as they could make him woke, gay and screwing guys.
The movie seems to be free on YouTube.
I skimmed through some of it and it looks horrible lol.
It's one of these movies you have to dare or bet yourself that you can watch the entire thing.
Of course the video says unavailable down below but if you click on youtube it takes you over there.
Not sure but it looks like the movie is cropped which can be annoying.
Not a Reco... just me being me which is obsessive compulsive I suppose.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMcuPuec9cE
Thanks for the Intersection reco Monet, I don't recall seeing it. Speaking of Juno, Hollywood culture really fucked up Ellen Page. I'll assume the movie you found on Youtube is The Benefactor as the link just goes to youtube but not specifically to the movie. Maybe I'll check that one out since I never saw it.
thanks again.
P.S. My favorite "Getting Away With It" movie is The Bad lieutenant:Port of Call New Orleans with Nicolas Cage.
Yes Benefactor... Free Movie on YouTube if you search for it.
I watched it early this morning.
It's ok I guess.
Not really that good.
Characters are not developed well.
Forced Acting.
Rushed Script.
I just watched it out of curiosity and I'm a bit of a movie buff.
I fast forwarded the last 20 minutes or so as they were dragging it out.
Personally and this is a spoiler alert but I would of ended the movie with an 18 wheeler crashing into Gere killing him at the end when he decides to change his life for the better.
That would of been great shock value and the best way to end it in my opinion.
You are out of your mind with Nick Cage in Bad Lieutenant.
Do yourself a favor and watch or revisit the original with Harvey.
Let's go Mets!
I saw the Keitel Bad Lieutenant Monet. Thanks again for posting it (obviously this will create a Bill Yung retort, but he will not alter my behavior of thanking someone who does me a solid no matter what he posts) - I enjoyed it. So, now, after viewing both, I can say that the Cage movie is not a remake. Each movie is about a different Bad Lieutenant in a different location. Keitel doesn't get away with anything - he gets drive-byed at the end for fucking up his game 7 bet ("LA's a lock"). The Cage movie was simply a dark comedy where getting away with it (more than getting away with it - actually profiting immensely including a promotion), despite being completely out of control and having to have several loose ends break his way (via clever screen-writing IMHO) was really funny and totally anti-establishment. Yes, corrupt people get away with shit all the time and can live, long, opulent lives as we both know and have seen over and over again.
The Keitel movie was a gritty reality-based movie, and I love how it was set at the height of violence in New York before the Giuliani clean-up - well worth the watch.
You make some good points.
I never thought of the Cage Version as a Dark Comedy.
I may have to watch it again with that in mind.
I had a hard time with it because it felt like a very bad remake.
But you make a good point that it isn't a remake.
The 1992 Version is just so damn realistic that it doesn't need a part 2 or remake.
In my opinion that is.
I read some reviews of the Port of Call version.
It appears many viewers interrupted the film as a dark comedy.
I don't think the producers, actors, writers and director had that in mind when filming.
Of course that doesn't matter as the viewers have the last say in the matter.
I also do not like the film Death to Smoochy if that helps.
On another topic I seen a young power couple hustling the Regal Riches the other night.
They were all teched up with earpieces and what not.
Thanks Monet. What I remember is when I saw the film at the theater there were definitely audience members laughing as Cage would escape some of these situations in tact. They also laughed when they saw the expressions of disbelief on some of the perps as Cage would shake them down for their valuables (drugs, money, etc.) - one of the funniest ones was when Cage shook down that couple outside the night club and then started grinding on the dude's girlfriend. This was actually true in the Keitel version to some extent, especially when Keitel pulled that pervert shit on those two girls who took their dad's SUV out with the broken tail light - possibly one of the only comedic scenes in an otherwise very serious movie.
Here you go tableplay.
Another movie that has low ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB.
In my opinion they got it completely wrong yet again.
You know I think I seen this before or bits of it.
It's familiar but that is besides the point.
This might be the best movie for this story ever made.
I'm serious about that and I'm only halfway through the movie.
The detail is so damn realistic.
Right off the bat the way they have their faces so dirty and scabbed up is impressive.
And the cuts heal gradually throughout the movie.
Whoever made this movie wasn't Fucking around.
I need to do some research but it certainly looks like it is on location.
The sets are incredible along with the costumes.
The acting... It's Fucking Stacy Keach and Faye Dunaway... Nuff Said.
And it's very rare to see the story from the side of John Holliday... that's refreshing.
Well that's my take so far.
I think its a gem.
I certainly have to buy a copy of this movie for repeat viewings.
Free On YouTube...
DOC (1971)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=amkd52m4npk
The second half of DOC falls fast and flat in the last 40 minutes or so.
Still worth multiple viewings but the storyline certainly changes in odd directions.
I like how they portray Earp as it feels more realistic.
I think 90 minutes wasn't enough time.
During this time period it was always a big no-no to have a movie go over the 100 minute mark.
So the movie/story seems to suffer in the last 45 minutes.
I would need more time and thought to give ideas on how to fix it.
All that being said I still love the attention to detail that this movie has.
It feels like they built this town from the ground up to make this movie.
I'll have to research all of that though to make sure.
I'm very curious as to where they filmed it.
No worries.
They got lazy in the second half.
They gave Earp some long barreled pistol that looked bent in one scene.
The Shotguns and Shells were completely wrong for that time period.
Plenty of other flaws to catch.
I just liked how gritty the first half was.
I also like how they portrayed these people.
99% of the time I want my movies to be historically accurate.
This is the rare time that I like a revision like this because I can feel the movie if that makes sense.
Doc: We sound like bad people, Wyatt.
Wyatt: We are, John.
That scene alone makes the movie for me.
That's human nature.
That's how 98% of us are.
I wasn't a big fan of Fast Break (1979).
Here are a couple of Black Comedies I feel are far superior.
Good Burger and Senseless.
I notice that Spade and Wayans aren't allowing YouTube to put that movie up for free lol.
I'm not sure what happened between Kenan & Kel but Kel was hilarious in Good Burger.
Of course Kenan went on to be the bigger star after he shunned Kel.
Probably got all pissed off over a woman, money, jealousy or some shit like that.
According to the internet they had a phone call and patched things up.

lol... Hilarious.

Ok... One More that everyone hated.
I always thought it was funny.
I've watched it multiple times.
I read that Hartman was depressed because of how poor this movie did.
Anyways, it relates to the above posts since Sinbad is in Good Burger.
My quick Sinbad story.
Years ago maybe 10 or so I seen him at Buffalo Bills.
He just had knee surgery so he was sitting on a stool for the whole show.
Besides the point.
Anyhoo, he tells this joke about the cops and drunk driving.
He says that if you make it home into your garage they shouldn't be allowed to arrest you.
That it's like hide and go seek and olly olly oxen free.
Your property is Home Base.
I've used that joke ever since.
Especially when I used to go around drunk driving.
That Fucking Joke gets me every time even as I type this.
The Big Mac scene on the bridge is pretty funny.
Houseguest (1995)

They say "Don't Bring a Knife to a Gunfight". But do bring a shot gun to a gunfight mother fuckers !!
Thanks for the reco Monet. Awesome movie. Smoking opium is a great way to relieve the horrible pain of tuberculosis I guess - but Fay didn't realize that when she got pissed off at Doc and started that fire.
Sorry Fast Break didn't work for you Monet. I saw it when I was a teenager at the theater, so it was from those eyes, and not those of an adult that I made that reco. Plus it was from '79.
Thanks for the two black comedy recos above, along with Houseguest. Well here is one that can't miss: "Hollywood Shuffle" (actually I shouldn't assume others will like it - but I thought it was super funny). But of course, you've probably already seen it. I remember when Sinbad first got discovered on Star Search. You knew he was going places when he blew away almost everyone else in the comedy category that season (I'm not positive, but I think it was around '84 - he took 2nd). Kudos to Star Search (Dennis Miller,Drew Carey, Dave Chappelle, etc.) as many great talents got discovered on that show.
It's not your fault that I have a problem with women in Men's Sports.
I liked the first 20 minutes or so of Fast Break if that helps.
I never have seen Hollywood Shuffle so there is that.
I think the opium was an inaccuracy as well but it sure did make for a good scene.
"Wong and I are going to the Palace of Mirrors."
That was a pretty good scene and that fire looked real.
It looked like they were actually filming the actors next to a raging fire.
You can't do that anymore.
Especially after Alec Baldwin.
In my opinion she was all pissed off because she got it in her head that they were going to run away and live some normal life as Farmers or Ranchers and she probably knew the drugs would kill any chance of that happening.
Gamblers and Whores can't have regular lives.
They need constant gratification, action and pleasure.
You're not getting that from living in the countryside working your fingers to the bone.
Easy Living and Easy Money is way too addictive to just walk away from.
Let's not forget when Doc cut the cards in the beginning he cheated lol.
I rolled that scene back 3 or 4 times just because lol.
I've made that move myself when I was a teenager.
Always seems to work against the ploppies.
In that case, I won't recommend The Bad News Bears to you (moot since you have seen that one almost certainly). Anyway you are right as far as reality is concerned - women can't compete in men's sports. You probably remember when John McEnroe got in trouble for stating the truth about that:
"if Serena played on the men's circuit she'd be "like No. 700 in the world."
That's actually one aspect of what makes Fast Break a comedy - the joke that Swish, or any other woman, could kick ass in Men's college basketball or any other level.
Yes that's right, she was mistaken about his intentions for visiting the opium den (so to speak) -- he just wanted a break from the pain of consumption. Yes, he took the luck element out of the stud game and got to hook up with Faye Dunaway for his effort.
We have some differences in that film.
The coach is a total Fuck Up and Drunk lol.
The acting and writing is just too good.
She doesn't win in the end and she is taken out of the game to save her arm.
I know it's hypocritical and not fair but it's just such a damn good movie.
I love the ending.
All the kids got a bottle of beer and who doesn't love Tanner Boyle?
Oh and they use Opera.
Seriously... please take me back to that time period when it was ok for little kids to have a beer.
"Hey Yankees... you can take your apology and your trophy and shove 'em straight up your ass!"
Edit: That movie is so much more relatable.
I never had to experience a girl playing on my team or leagues but everything else in that film is in my youth.
My dad would be drinking Old Milwaukee as he was umpiring near first base.
In Pop Warner Football I was concussed twice and nobody gave a shit, noticed or helped me lol.
I just got up and got to the sideline or the huddle.
It took me over ten years to learn that I was concussed.
Of course I don't care about it or even say concussed... I just got knocked out for a moment.
Part of the game and being a boy or man.
