The way addiction works is it sometimes morphs into another addiction. The fact that you've always been smoking that marijuana doesn't mean that you didn't substitute one substance for another when you quit drinking. It does mean that you satisfied your addiction/alcoholism through something or other at all times.

But you must have thought about why you drank so much and why you had to stop? Yes alcohol is physically habit forming versus marijuana may not be, but still, the fact that you drank to excess means something. Do you think it means nothing?

Also, does it mean nothing that you've been smoking that stuff all your life?


I think your argument is something along the lines of the Winston Churchill argument of that he more or less functioned all his life, even as as drunk (also, he'd wake up sober while the woman who told him he was drunk one time, would wake up still ugly, if you've heard that story). I've posted more than once, here and at WOV, that when I resumed casino play about five years ago, after a decade or so hiatus, that my initial intention was just to play enough to get comps. I wrote about how pre-hiatus I had gotten to an average bet of around $3000. per hand.

When I started up again, I didn't need the money and still don't.

Somewhere along the way I did start betting more and more, until, the past couple years, I far surpassed the levels at which I had ever played.

I would say that if this increased betting resulted in increased losing, and I did not stop, that would definitely be gambling addiction.

But the increased betting did not result in increased losing.

However what the increased betting did result in, is increased stress due to the inevitable lofty ups and downs. I have written more than once over especially the past year or so about how I don't enjoy that stress. And that alone could be construed as a negative thing, a bad thing. I mean, who needs that sort of stress? if it's not part of one's occupation.

Now, the crossroads I am at now, or have been at for a little while now, is, if I don't need to do it, and don't even enjoy it at times, why continue? I'd say that if I keep playing at these levels given the increased stress that I definitely don't appreciate, that could be construed as something along the path to abuse or addiction.

I would also add that that "stress" is at least part of what gambling addicts crave, the risk taking adrenalin. And the more risked, the greater the adrenalin rush. So, I'd have to say that especially since I don't appreciate the stress, if I keep up with it, that might indicate some sort of wired the wrong way addiction to the practice, win or lose. One sign of addiction is keeping up with a practice (habit) even after it is no longer or not always fun.


Here is what I wrote at WOV about a month ago:

Much earlier this year I posted about how the ups and downs were starting to get to me, and that I was thinking of easing back on the play or even stopping. Then I had a big win trip and of course, that idea went out the window.

Now, closing in on exactly five years of play since the big long hiatus I took, looking back I definitely didn't stick to my initial intention which was to play just enough for comps. I started with all $50K lines, and then around two years ago or so I increased them to the levels where I could get private tables, and raised them even more after that.

I still don't like the ups and downs. I actually haven't even played in several days, which I take breaks like that every now and then in Vegas, but I don't plan to play again this week. Been seeing different parts of Vegas and its environs with the wife lately.

I can't imagine playing small again, don't think I could do it. So, for me the choice would be to either just stop playing entirely, or keep playing big. I'd be fine with either scenario.

It depends on the game. Blackjack is a lot of work (for me). The intensity I am putting into not just the count but keeping track of every card out and remaining and what it means can be exhausting.

Baccarat I am tracking something else, but more looking for those advantage hands, so the over all intensity is less because there are many hands where I probably don't know any more about the outcome than anyone else.

Anyway for some time now, there are days when I go to play and think about how great this is, and other days when I go in thinking how much I hate it. I don't know if that makes sense, but it comes down to that this isn't all I can do. I suppose if this were my living then I'd never consider easing up or stopping. Certainly if I didn't win consistently I would have stopped years ago.

One trick pony hun? This year my income comes from 4 different methods of advantage play and blackjack card counting accounts for just barely 50%.

And each of those other 3 streams of advantage play income each account for more money that you have really won.

Can I ask without getting a trollish response, what is the attraction at this particular time Ray Finkle? You are the 3rd person I have talked to in the past 2 days that just got to or is heading to Vegas right now. Traditionally, after the Rodeo leaves town which happened yesterday, up until about Dec 23, is the slowest time of year in Vegas.

Maybe THAT is the attraction. That was always one of my favorite times of the year when I used to play the local type places playing mid level mid black stakes. I do not smoke all the time, unlike my buddy; typically I toke only at night, or when he comes over to play ladder ball and listen to music, and then only a couple hits of now-legal cannabis on my trusty, ancient little wooden hand pipe.

Here's the rub, and the thing that makes me question whether I am in fact addicted: I can and several times a year do decide to put the pipe down and go on the Weed Wagon for awhile, typically for a couple of weeks.

While not smoking I rarely think about it, have no cravings, and am quite content not to puff away.

But I enjoy it when I resume my evil ways.

Everyone one defines the line at which one becomes an addict. You're in the general vicinity but imo if you can readily quit without any noticeable issues you are not an addict. Pretty straightforward.

He hasn't quit. He's smoked all his adult life plus 3 years before that.

He can no more stop smoking than UNKewlJ can stop lying.


Getting back to my example, I stopped all casino play for a decade or so. Went to Vegas during that period many times. Didn't play a nickel. Didn't stop because I lost, stopped because I wanted to concentrate on my career. Once that got to the point where I had boatloads of money and time to spare I resumed casino play.

Let's say I stop again.

What does that mean, if anything?


If I'd played in casinos since I was 15, every single day, with only a smattering few weeks of stopping here and there could I say that I can stop?


In one example you have someone who stopped for a decade or more. In another one who stopped for only a few weeks. Does one cessation mean more than the other, if the activity is maintained?

Point being that stopping and then starting up again shouldn't be the criteria for whether or not someone is capable of stopping for good.

Yeah... I'm not quick to trust those who don't drink at all. Of course that feeling may change over time after getting to know someone and what their motivations are.

I also find it interesting that people who don't drink, or drink only rarely, are quicker to throw the 'alcoholic' label around. I will only use that term if someone meets at least one of the following criteria:

• They cannot be sober, shortly after they get up they're hitting the bottle. This is the raging alcoholic.
• Once the person starts drinking they will not stop (or find it difficult to) until they are completely wasted and irrational. This would be more the functional alcoholic.

In either case, the person suffers some serious negative consequences when they are drinking. Falling short of any of this then the person is probably just an alcohol abuser. I think there is much confusion over the distinction. Just my opinion.

I wasn't addicted to alcohol. I was a binge drinker. An episodic alcoholic. I went days and even weeks between drinking binges. But when I hit the bar I had no problem drinking them out of a liter of whiskey by closing time.

It's great to occasionally get out and binge drink. That is, when you are young. But in the end, if you keep it up, you just wind up an old drunk. That's what I seen in the mirror and that's why I quit.

Feb 28, 2017 was the last night I had a drink, or I should say 20 drinks. The next day I woke up and, for some reason, said fuck it, I'm through. I'm two months shy of 7 years being dry.

Both me and the other passenger in the car said that we should just stop here and wait for them to open at 8am so we can buy gas. Axelwolf raised his voice and started yelling at us to drive into the desert with no gas. His reasoning was that there was no phone signal, and because of that we can't stay there. Axelwolf started yelling and told me to drive into the desert. So I did. And we ran out of gas in the middle of the desert. We were forced to pay a tow truck company $300 to deliver 2 gallons of gas to us, and they didn't even show up until 8am.

I believe that 99% of people would have made the right decision in that moment, but axelwolf was not able to.

One time I was driving axel around in one of my cars that I really liked. Axel asked to smoke inside, I said no. He complained and I gave in because I felt obligated to him. Nobody has ever smoked in that car before, you were the first and only one and you burned a hole, and you didn't mention it. I discovered it when I got home.

I don't like to badmouth anybody. But after reading this post, I see now that I am not alone in my opinions of axelwolf. Everyone held him in such high regards that I felt like I could blindly trust him. That was a mistake.

Learning what not to do is the exact same thing as learning what to do.

Axelwolf has taught me a lot. He was my first step into the world of slot AP. He was kind to me and provided me with a huge first step. He showed what to do, and through his own actions, showed me what not to do. I learned a ton from him, and for that I am truly thankful. Really.

However, in the end, I realize that I was just a piece of advantage that could easily be taken. That was the most important lesson that I learned.

You insisted that column B has to always be negative. That is not correct, it doesn't make any sense. Both me and the other person in the car tried to explain to you that column B can't be negative. How can you have a negative money out? Column C is the only spot where negatives can show up.

On Christmas eve, you self-admitted that you got zero sleep and was up all night in the hotel room. When we got to the casino you ordered a Captain Morgan, ontop of having zero sleep.

You had us sit side by side, playing two machines each, slam firing cards. Your reasoning was that it was Christmas and you were trying to get home before midnight so we had to work fast.

I immediately noticed that this was a dangerous thing to do. There is nothing else to look at besides us. Why are we playing 2 machines each while sitting side by side in an empty casino on Christmas? I kept trying to go to the other side of the casino and put some distance between us.

You insisted we stay together and how it didn't matter. You said "Just do 1 more." So I did 1 more and said "OK I'm moving", But you told me no, and insisted we stay together and keep going.

I said, "Since I have a higher risk than you, you should listen to me. This is really bad what we are doing." And then you got angry and started saying how I was mistaken and that you have way more risk than me, and that I should follow your commands.

Later on in the discord I asked for the official percentages and it was officially reported that I had more liability than you. So how come you said the opposite on Christmas? This is another example of you changing numbers.

On our way home to Las Vegas, all the gas stations were sold out of gas. We had no gas left, and you started yelling and ordered me to drive us into the desert with no gas. We tried to reason with you but you were yelling and insisted. So I followed commands. And we got stuck in the desert for Christmas. Bad decision. Why did you think it's a good idea to drive into the desert with no gas?

Later on, we found out that all our cards were disabled. The casino called me and I answered the phone. It was the Casino manager calling to tell me I was banned. At first he was furious, but I told him that I don't see him as an enemy, and how it's just a game of cat and mouse. It's our job to get the money and it's his job to try and stop us. It isn't personal. After that he calmed down and we had a civil conversation.
He wanted to know how I was able to un-disable players cards. He said how it really pissed him off that I did that. I told him how I did it.

He told me that he was able to read all our texts. He said that we should always go to the bathroom if we are going to text because the bathroom is the only place where he can’t put cameras.
He said, "You know how we caught you guys right?" And I said "On Christmas." And he said "Bingo." He said "Don't you realize that when you hit a handpay, we have to review the footage?"

You blew that play on Christmas because you were drinking, on zero sleep, and refused to listen to me.

You left me on read from 07/03/2022 to 05/24/2023. I sent you a message and you didn’t respond until 10 months later.

When you first tried to recruit me, I said that I was willing to work completely free and all I wanted was experience. You refused and said that I can't go unless I take on risk. I said no thanks. You kept asking me to go. We eventually agreed that I would go as long as my max loss would be $5k. And you said how losing $5k would be a jackpot situation and how if we did lose, it would probably be less.

When you requested I pay an additional $7500, I was already down $4200. $2000 of my own cash, and 12-13 trips to and from California, Gas and Labor. 6600+ miles I drove for this play. Later on in the discord I asked for the official percentages and it was officially reported that I had more liability than you. So how come you said the opposite on Christmas? This is another example of you changing numbers.

On our way home to Las Vegas, all the gas stations were sold out of gas. We had no gas left, and you started yelling and ordered me to drive us into the desert with no gas. We tried to reason with you but you were yelling and insisted. So I followed commands. And we got stuck in the desert for Christmas. Bad decision. Why did you think it's a good idea to drive into the desert with no gas?

Later on, we found out that all our cards were disabled. The casino called me and I answered the phone. It was the Casino manager calling to tell me I was banned. At first he was furious, but I told him that I don't see him as an enemy, and how it's just a game of cat and mouse. It's our job to get the money and it's his job to try and stop us. It isn't personal. After that he calmed down and we had a civil conversation.
He wanted to know how I was able to un-disable players cards. He said how it really pissed him off that I did that. I told him how I did it.

He told me that he was able to read all our texts. He said that we should always go to the bathroom if we are going to text because the bathroom is the only place where he can’t put cameras.
He said, "You know how we caught you guys right?" And I said "On Christmas." And he said "Bingo." He said "Don't you realize that when you hit a handpay, we have to review the footage?"

You blew that play on Christmas because you were drinking, on zero sleep, and refused to listen to me.

You left me on read from 07/03/2022 to 05/24/2023. I sent you a message and you didn’t respond until 10 months later.

When you first tried to recruit me, I said that I was willing to work completely free and all I wanted was experience. You refused and said that I can't go unless I take on risk. I said no thanks. You kept asking me to go. We eventually agreed that I would go as long as my max loss would be $5k. And you said how losing $5k would be a jackpot situation and how if we did lose, it would probably be less.

When you requested I pay an additional $7500, I was already down $4200. $2000 of my own cash, and 12-13 trips to and from California, Gas and Labor. 6600+ miles I drove for this play. Twice I put in 30 hour shifts for this play. You said I was "full of shit" when I said I lost $2k. That is another example of you changing numbers.

At this point I was down $4200. I gave you another $1000 so now I am down $5200 on this play. We are square. It isn't my fault you keep forgetting things and changing numbers. It is because you drink while working.

That said, as an impartial, uninvolved observer, Jce102jz, you mention 12-13 trip to California and a play at Longhorn. If you felt Axelwolf was incompetent, unfair as a team leader/manager, who's actions put you in danger of 86ing, why did you continue to work with/for him for so long?

Axelwolf has been at this for 30 years and has teamed with and managed presumably 100's, maybe thousands of other AP. I would think if he was soo terrible and dishonest at managing teams and AP plays, there would have been many more complaints like yours, being he has been active on multiple forums for a long time. But I haven't seen that. Most AP's that have met and dealt with Axelwolf speak and think highly of him.

If you had a legitimate gripe with finances and not being paid what you believe you were entitled to, I would think you would have found a better way to express that and try to resolve it, than just showing up at a forum and trashing him, hoping to damage his reputation.
