A few thoughts I must express

This morning I received the news that I will be undergoing emergency heart valve replacement surgery Monday to replace a mechanical valve that was put in 6 years ago which is failing. No need for anyone to feel bad for me as it’s an anonymous message board and none of you really know me. Even the handful of guys here that I consider my “internet friends” haven’t met me...at least not officially (that might give one or two something to think about :rolleyes:). For those that don’t care a whole lot for me, don’t get too excited. I anticipate being back online in a week to 10 days with too much time on my hands while I am recovering. :p I believe in God and have a strong relationship with him. We talk everyday. I feel confident that he doesn’t want me up there bothering him just yet. But I do have a couple things I need to say publicly...first.

First my history with this condition. In 2011, in my late 20’s I became sick with endocarditis, which is an infection that quickly eats the lining of heart values. I had heart valve replacement surgery, replacing 2 valves, and at that time I was told I had 25-30 years before they might need to be replaced again. Actually at that time I opted for the mechanical replacement, rather than the tissue valves, specifically because they were supposed to last longer, so I am feeling a little bit short-changed. :( Life happens.

Receiving this news this morning on such short notice has send my immediate family into chaos. My mother who lives less than a mile away, is immediately moving into the guest room as she feels she needs to be here to care for me. My brother, hates having my mother in the same house as he always fear she wants to run his life. Silly boy has nothing to worry about, she’s not moving in to run his life...she is moving in to run mine over the next couple months. My partner is pissed that my mother thinks she needs to care for me during my recovery. He says “who does she think cared for you 6 years ago, when she was sitting on her ass in Florida?”

As these selfish morons, who are my immediate family, and I love dearly, fight among themselves, no one has even asked what I want. I really just want a little peace and tranquility for the next 36 hours.

I have already gone off track more than intended so, back to you all, the members of this forum, that I now call home. Yesterday, my main concerns were the expensive repair to my swimming pool and giving Alan a hard time about seeing 18 yo’s in a row. Neither seems very important to me today. I wish I could delete the “poll” thread I started just to make Alan look bad and let him know that no one believes him...but I can’t. The site doesn’t allow me to, so Dan Druff if you are reading, please delete that thread...it serves no purpose.

I mean really what do I care if Alan thinks he saw 18 yo’s in a row (he didn’t! ;)). Whether he is lying or misremembering….what do I care. Whatever he saw or thinks he saw made quite an impression on him.

As a matter of fact, ALL the bickering that I have been involved in for the last year and a half, on several forums, today, I ask myself why? What does any of it matter? Including what people think of me. That is NOT why I began participating on gambling related forums. I sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended by anything I said, as I at times got carried away in defending myself. And I am going to single out and specify Alan, because I have said some things, nasty at times, that although he has a way and seems to enjoy provoking, he still didn’t deserve.

I also want to address a couple people from prior sites that while they don’t participate here that I know of, I have a feeling just might read. :)

First Mike Shackleford: I am really sorry you got caught up in a feud that didn’t involve you. I think you made a bad choice in getting involved and once you did, you treated me unfairly. But there is plenty of blame to go around.....we can all take a piece of that blame. I don’t think you set out to treat me unfairly, but you did and it hurt me, because I respected you and really tried to make positive contributions to your forum for 4 years. You were put in the middle. And whether you think you have done anything that needs my forgiveness or not….I forgive you. I also deeply regret my handling of things afterwards on Gamblingforums, and particularly all the name calling. I often rail against the juvenile name calling on these forums and no one did it more than I. I sincerely apologize.

Norm Wattenberger: I will never understand your actions throughout this ordeal (feud). But I forgive you.
Norm, remember when I said I will celebrate the day you die? Trust me I am not going to give you the chance to do that first. I intend to live a long time. I hope you do too. :o Maybe given enough time we can find a way to figure this out and move forward.

LarryS (from gambling forums): Larry, nothing wrong with being a male nurse. Very noble profession. I apologize for any jokes or putdowns involving your occupation. And I know you are now retired (I hope happily so), but just in case you are doing some sort of volunteer work here in Vegas and happen to be in the hospital I am in, DO NOT WASH MY BALLS! Stay the hell away from my balls! :D

It’s a fantastically beautiful day here in Vegas, bright blue sunny skies, 78 degrees and just a hint of a breeze and I have a few friends coming over for an impromptu get-together that my brother has in very bad taste named “the last supper”....god love him. Aside from PM's, are internet forums the place for this? I don't think so, but others decide for themselves. I haven't seen any boards that care one way or another. Though the only other board where I have seen anything like this is the WoV. The practice there seems to be taking weird turns. Perhaps, even fewer have questioned this.

Can people form sincere relationships of this nature on line? In other words, can we come too far with it, to contemplate contemplating mortality. Real death involves not always saying goodbye, needing or wanting to; loose ends with family; and unfinished arguments, projects and thoughts. It's like we all now feel compelled to document our lives in fine detail, and think about thinking about it, as with, say, the internet forums. What happened to living it? Come what the heck may.

Be calm and get well, KJ. And it is a cool thing to have your mom take care of you -- that's a great thing!

All my wishes for your next 36 hours to be a minor bump on the way to some good strong valves. Check in as soon as you can. Or have your mom check in -- she'll get a hoot out of it.

Wow, that's really bad. I would be really scared coming into something like this.

I am probably about 10 years older than you, and I still believe I have a long time until I have to face problems like this, so it really shows that anything can happen at any time.

Hope it turns out ok.

I can't say that I am not scared...I am. I think you would have to be an idiot not to be and while I am close to an idiot, I am not there yet. :) Not having much time to prepare was probably a good thing though. My younger brother is a real mess as he has never been through anything like this with anyone close to him. (kind of a sheltered life).

I have a good doctor with a lot of experience. And while there is nothing 'routine' about full open heart surgery, which is what I am having again, I am under the impression valve replacement is less complicated (and risky) than other heart procedures like bypass, as they are not working directly on the heart, but kind of the outer edges. :confused: That's probably wrong, so please don't anyone pull up stats proving me wrong....at least not right now.

As a matter of fact, the doc told me he could have done this procedure with a minimally invasive approach (without cracking open the ribs) except that they is too much scar tissue from 6 years ago, so he can't go that route. :( Don't know why he told me that? "We could have....but we can't" doesn't help me. :rolleyes:

Anyway things have calmed down on the home front. I had a little talk with everyone asking them to be tolerant of everyone else and what they are going through. I am lucky to have people in my life that care so much. I had a relaxing day watching football, and my mother cooked me a wonderful breakfast (french toast) and dinner (meatloaf), my favorite meal. So I am ready...as ready as I can be.

My former News Director in Miami has had this surgery twice. The second time in his late 60s. His brother also had it. They both inherited heart valve problems. Even in their late 60s they came thru the surgeries fine. There have been great advances and doctors know what they're doing, meaning this is not experimental stuff anymore.

Be confident. I'm sure in three days you'll be back online.

Apparently, what you’ve printed is not how you really felt. If you can’t control your emotions and tilt on waste of time bullshit anonymous forums anytime you’re challenged, why should we take anything else you’ve said serious?

Yes, I’m also anonymous but always print exactly what I truly think and feel. Should I face the same challenges you’re being forced to deal with today, my post here before the procedure would sound something like this, “I’m still convinced alleged AP claims on forums unproven are full of shit. And, for the record this place will never cross my mind again after signing off and not until and if I ever sign back in. My friends who've had open heart say they were amazed how fast the hospital kicks you out to go home, and that it's a rugged three/four weeks at home afterward --- and for God's sake, don't cough or sneeze. But they said after about six weeks, you're good to go.

I read that sometimes "porcine," i.e. coming from pigs, valves are used in this procedure.

My question: what would a Jew feel about a pig valve being inserted in his / her body?

Alive and home early. Doctor says I am doing great. I don’t feel like I am doing great. I feel like I have been run over by a truck and have a sword through my chest front to back.

Doctor said I would be released Friday and a couple hours later asked if I was ready to go home. Not sure why? I am grateful to the fine medical professionals at Mountain View Hospital who cared for me, but also glad to be leaving them.

Rest up.

My friends who've had open heart were amazed how quickly they were also booted from the hospital. They all had people to care for them at home, but they said if you're solo -- holy hell, it would be an impossible deal. I think in general it may be just as well to get out of there Thursday, as Friday is a zoo and none of the backups on duty Friday want to have the responsibility of saying, "Yeah, this open heart dude is ready to go home."

I was sent home 48 hours after my kidney/pancreas transplant and the reason was simple and basic: less likely to get an infection OUT of the hospital. Hospitals are for sick people -- not those on the mend.

Mend my friend.

My Dad had a quintuple bypass in his 70's and on the third day was walking up and down the hall, telling the doctors he was ready to go home. He literally measured the distance he could walk inside the house during the winter and was faithful to do what the doctors told him. He finally passed 10 years later from cancer related problems.

Glad you're doing better. Blackbutthole should be banned. He contributes nothing but negativity. One pure punk asshole.

I do not agree that blackhole should be banned. He has a right to his opinion, even negative opinion of me and/or advantage play / advantage players.

On Tuesday afternoon (1 day after surgery) I was transferred from ICU to the cardiac ward. less than an hour later, some sadistic attendant or nurse or whatever he was, had me walking in the hall. From the time you open your eyes and get off that machine that is breathing or you, they have you doing breathing and coughing exercises every freaking hour...even in the middle of the night. It is to prevent pneumonia. It is this little plastic contraption with blue ball and you have to blow hard enough to lift the balls. (no gay jokes axel). Then after the breathing exercise, you have to try to cough to expel any mucus.

That little cough is pure agony. Any upper torso movement, even just breathing is agony, but that cough is just hell. For those that don't know, heart patients are given a "heart pillow", to hold against you chest for support and to stabilize your sternum during painful breathing and coughing. For the first few weeks out, this heart pillow is your best friend in the world. I am using the same pillow from 6 years ago. A small white pillow, with a shamrock embroiled on it. It is like an old friend that has been through this before with me.

Blackhole, I really don't feel up to fighting with you over this, but I take offense at this post. I think it was a cheap shot born from your dislike of me.

There are times when people reflect on things they have said and done. A period of uncertainty involving an illness or medical condition is often one such time. Recognizing shortcomings or behavior that you regret and acknowledging that regret, to the people involved is a chance to right behavior that you regret and an opportunity to grow as a human being.

I think even you know that my comments were sincere. Yet, you want to turn it around...spin it to something negative...like "oh there we can't believe anything he says". Quite frankly you decided long ago that you don't believe anything I say, so declaring this as you did, was really all about smearing my name.

And I find it extremely sad and in bad taste that you would make that post and those comments on the morning you knew I was heading into major surgery and would not be able to respond any time soon. Day 1 of my recovery is not going well at all. I am incredibly weak. I think I am weaker today than a day a two ago. :( Just getting dressed, a short walk or even typing out a few posts on line, really wears me out. :( This morning I took a short walk down the driveway out front, and it really is short, the front yard area of my property is not very big (back yard bigger) and when I turned to come back up the driveway, I was too weak. I couldn't do it. I needed help. The driveway has the slightest of incline, but nothing even worth mentioning, yet it seemed like a mountain to me. Last night I slept in the living room in a recliner as I have yet to even think about conquering the steps to the bedrooms. I know I can't do that without help. About the only thing I am doing with regularity is blowing into that damn breathing device.

My brother is my cardiac rehab coach and has a plan from the hospital cardiac rehab unit that we want to follow, but I am way behind. I have developed a fever which is a concern and definitely something we need to watch and probably worse of all, I just can't get much rest. Just can't get comfortable without significant pain and discomfort. I almost feel like if I could just get a good night sleep, everything else would be much better and stronger, but I can't. It's only been a day, but I am very frustrated and feel like I am letting my brother and mother and partner/spouse down. They have completely put their lives on hold to care for me and I am not progressing at all and frankly have lost all hope of a speedy recovery. Hope that I had just yesterday. :(

I hate to say this but while I was released from the hospital two days after my transplants, a week later I was back in the hospital because I caught an infection at home.

The reason for the quick release from the hospital was so that I wouldn't get an infection in the hospital -- and the reverse happened.

WoW! Yesterday when you mentioned being released early from the hospital, you conveniently left THAT part out didn't ya? :rolleyes: I am sure you didn't want to scare me. I appreciate that.

My mother is in touch with my doctor. He arranged a home visit....I guess a nurse? for tomorrow. I am very worried if my temp increases any more, I will be back in the hospital. :(

Kewlj after my transplants I thought about writing an article called "Oh, I Forgot To Tell You" about all the things that my surgeon and the others on the transplant team forgot to tell me prior to the surgery and which I discovered myself after the surgery "the hard way."

The "funniest" was the first night after my transplant when I had "restless leg syndrome" and could not sleep. Restless Leg Syndrome is the horrific feeling when you feel like you have to get up and run because pf the "tingling" in the legs. The "tingling" was actually my new kidney getting the toxins out of my body that collected in my legs when I had kidney failure. The restless leg syndrome was so severe that I had to ask for morphine to be able to sleep. The following morning when the surgeon came in to check on me I complained about the restless leg syndrome. And he said "Oh, I forgot to tell you that was going to happen."

There's another thing about getting a kidney transplant. When they transplant the kidney they do not reconnect the nerves that used to be running from the kidney to the brain. Yes, there are nerves running from your brain to your kidney which help regulate your kidney to produce urine. Without those nerves the kidney continually produces urine. Well, I became for about a week, a non-stop urine producing machine. It took about a week for my new kidney to develop a pattern on its own without a connection to my brain. When I first mentioned this non-stop urine production to my surgeon he responded "Oh, I forgot to tell you that was going to happen."

And then there are people who die after a transplant. Did my doctor discuss the risk of death? No.

Believe me, there are a lot of things good and bad I could have told you prior to your surgery. Why say the negative things?

There are times when people reflect on things they have said and done. A period of uncertainty involving an illness or medical condition is often one such time. Recognizing shortcomings or behavior that you regret and acknowledging that regret, to the people involved is a chance to right behavior that you regret and an opportunity to grow as a human being.

I think even you know that my comments were sincere. Yet, you want to turn it around...spin it to something negative...like "oh there we can't believe anything he says". Quite frankly you decided long ago that you don't believe anything I say, so declaring this as you did, was really all about smearing my name.

And I find it extremely sad and in bad taste that you would make that post and those comments on the morning you knew I was heading into major surgery and would not be able to respond any time soon. Ok, this is the second time in recent days that someone has posted something along these lines. The first was coach belly last week questioning why I didn't object to comments someone else made about Singer's wife.

Have I been elected forum police or forum morality officer that I am not aware of? Am I suppose to comment on every post by every poster as to whether I find the comments appropriate? No. I comment on posts and comments directed at me. If I think something said to or about me is out of line or crosses a line, I will say so and respectfully ask the poster to be a little more civil, as I try to be. I don't think Blackhole was looking for sympathy over his illness. The first I heard of his illness, it was brought up in a secondary nature about a different topic. I am not even sure it was him that brought it up was it? :confused: Although I can't imagine why someone else would bring it up? I don't really remember the details and am not going to search for them right now.

Nor am I looking for sympathy. I have always shared things concerning my AP life and personal life on whatever forum I called "home" at the time. That's why I participate. I enjoy the sharing back and forth with other members, mostly of AP/gambling stuff, but some of our personal lives as well, because often the two bleed into each other.

My son in law died recently of rejection / infection issues following a double lung transplant.

He lasted three years post-surgery; young, otherwise healthy guy.

I am going to take this advice, RS. I have already rejected a medical recommendation today that I go to a cardiac rehab facility for a week, opting instead to remain at home and recover with my supportive family, so I feel like I should heed someone's good advice today and you are the lucky guy I am going to listen to. :) So are we blocking coach or just ignoring? :confused:

No, I didn't make that up. Singer posted a picture of her...I just commented on what I saw :(....as far as Betty goes, go easy on him....he is in major withdrawal since his mangod/fantasy got the axe from here....and the only "got ya" moment he ever had was when he caught the JV quarterback coming out of the shower (intentionally) :rolleyes:

I will be leaving shortly to spend a few days in a cardiac rehab center. Well it's not specifically a cardiac rehab center, I guess. Just a rehab center. I will be in the cardiac program but other's are there for different reasons. I suppose this makes me a "liar" based on my earlier decision today to reject the doctor's recommendation, but I was unanimously overruled by those caring for me and while my vote is really the only one that counts, I have to accept that, my judgement was probably wrong. I have to accept that my body is not off to a very good start with this recovery and I need a little help.

Please, no well wishes. I know some of you wish the best for me and I appreciate it. I am not taking my computer so as to focus on my health and I will talk to you in a few days.
