They just replaced my Do Not Disturb sign with this garbage today.

This is part of a "test" program at Rio.

No more Do Not Disturb.

Security CAN (but won't always) enter room every 24 hours.

They send in two security guards. One stands by the door, the other inspects the room.

When inspection is over, security guard has to use the room phone to call in and verify he checked the room (presumably to prevent security from lying about having been in there?)

Lame.

How in depth will their inspections be?

Will they go through a guest's luggage and drawers?

What if they find illegal stuff other than guns, e.g. a bindle of cocaine, for instance?

Will they rat out a paying customer to the cops for anything other than a terrorist threat?

If so, there goes the old "What happens in Vegas..." and "sin city" mottos.

Which hotel?

When a housekeeper cleans your room they also use the phone to record the visit. So there should always be a record of room entry.

Is there a procedure they follow if you are in the room when they want to inspect?

This can be prevented using three easy steps.

1. Buy taser.
2. Use taser.
3. Actually....just 2 steps.

V--do you think any evidence (with cocaine for example) would be admissible? Probable cause? Illegal search? Fruits of an illegal search? Warrant?

While I am not a criminal attorney, my initial thought is that as the guest was on notice that a daily search would be done, any contraband found would probably be admissible, at least so long as the security guard stayed in the room with the contraband until the police arrived.

If it was found in plain sight there should be no problem; if it was found out of plain sight, as incident to a search, I suppose the question would be whether the search exceeded permissible bounds.

I am not confident that this is correct, but it is how I view it at the moment.

They had these same Room Occupied signs at Horseshoe Bossier City when we were there this weekend. Did not read the fine print on it but it appeared to be the same.

I'm all in favor of the inspections as long as they are reasonable. I tend to be up all night and sleep most of the day. I have housekeeping come in the evening. It's okay with me if they want to inspect at the same time -- but not while I'm in bed.

My problem is that I have had problems with both maids and security stealing from me(security got me in AC for over 1k during a room transfer..I fogot my jacket in the room I left and they got my.shit).

Maids really get you good unles you are extra careful. Yes I know, there are way to make.sure none of this ever happens. Unfortunately if you stay in enough palaces a mistake is bound to happen.

These people always have access to your room so there is always a danger of theft whether you have scheduled housekeeping or security inspections or not. You have to keep your valuables protected.

I uess the finding of cocaine for example would be during a normal serch.

there has to be some middle ground between an open meth lab in the bathtub, and a secret compartment in the bottom of a packed suitcase.

if you bring a computer into a computer fix it shopand they stumble upon child porn or child abuse pictures, i think they can report it and the evidence would stick, no matter how encrypted or hard to find it was.

Sure, and if security finds a bindle of cocaine they can call 911.

But it they're smart, they won't.

Time will tell whether this intrusion becomes a deal breaker for some.

You're missing the point.

If you keep a Do Not Disturb on constantly, then if anything goes missing, you can complain and they can check the entry log for the lock, and see who entered.

So then the maid or security has to explain why they barged through a DnD sign, and you can press it from there.

If they can now enter when they feel like for "daily checks", if anything goes missing, they can simply deny that they took anything, and their entry will be considered normal.

Usually thieves will go after the low-hanging fruit. They would rather steal when they're "supposed" to be in the room, rather than barge through a DnD and then face a customer complaint when stuff goes missing.

Some have been brutal, at times involving follow-home murders.

However, the victims are almost always women or the elderly.

They rarely seem to go after non-elderly men.

Why?

Because even though the robber still has a big edge when holding a gun or knife, he still doesn't want to take the chance to rob someone who might fight him, when he can easily pick on someone who is likely unable to fight back.

Pretty much the same thing goes for hotel room thefts.

Dan, times have changed. I'm all for inspections. Just do it when I'm not sleeping. There are probably 14 hours in a day when they can come in my room.

I know we discussed this before but I also want housekeeping every day including fresh towels and sheets. I can protect my valuables, so yes I want service.

I think you need to rent a house or an apartment from now on for the WSOP. Community safety is the priority and not a no-enter room for Dan.

To be fair, your valuables should be locked in your safe with an easy for you to remember password but hard for other people to guess.

I just wonder whether a "room occupied" sign will work the same way "do not disturb" signs work in keeping housekeeping at bay until I've left the room for the day.
Usually I put the DND on when I go get breakfast, because I want to eat before I get myself together for going out for the day and getting the room neatened up for housekeeping (personal stuff out of the way, any trash in or near trashcans, suitcases shut and in the corner). When I forget to put it on when I go to breakfast, 90% of the time housekeeping is trying to clean when I get back.

I wonder what will happen if a guest locks himself in his room and does not respond to or acknowledge security when they knock and seek entry?

What if the guest is deaf and cannot hear the door knocking?

Security cannot use a pass key if the bolts are thrown / locked; what will they do to gain entry, and will it be a criminal offense to deny them entry?

I understand they can evict you; but how do they evict you if you bolt the door and repeatedly and unambiguously deny them access?

What will they do when that scenario unfolds (I expect it will someday): have SWAT blow the door with explosives?

They very easily can drill the dead bolt lock... and probably charge your credit card for the damage.

are you kidding? This is a town that prides itself on the "what happens in vegas stays in vegas" mantra......where people are partying all night and sleeping all day.

so when do you walk in a room.....a 3 am when some peole are just getting in. Or at 11 am when they are into 3 hours of sleep?

I do agree though that they have the roght to do this. I mean if they are subject to a barage of lawsuits if a guy with guns stockpiles them in his room and then picks off people......then they have to mitigate their potential liability.

The thing is this is the cheapo way of dealing with a problem. They could instead hire extra peole and basically do an airport xray of all luggage coming in. Some hotels in europe already do this.

However witht he size of the hotels and the lines that form at check in time.....they would have to hire a bunch of people to keep things moving....and so they go for the cheap way out.

Now if someone wanted to hide a few dis-assembled rifles under the Mattress.....will the security guys be lifting up and peeking under matresses? I am thinking they dont go that far. and if luggage has a lock on it....anything vcan be overlooked as well. This in my opinion is ineffective for what they want to accomplish.

I mostly agree with this.

Actually, hotels could easily screen luggage without causing a big line because people check in at varied times. It's not like a plane where everyone shows up at roughly the same time, and where the airport serves tons of different flights.

How often do you see others coming upstairs with luggage at the same time as you? Not that often, right?

So if hotels really wanted to solve the problem, they could post a guard and an X-Ray machine at the elevators. People with luggage would have to go through the machine, and people without luggage could walk right through.

But as you said, this would cost money, and hotels are cheap, so instead they are doing this lame room inspection thing.

What's also so stupid is the fact that someone could easily get around this by buying two rooms, keeping the guns in one room, calling the maid for the second room, then moving the guns into the second room when she leaves, and then calling the maid to the first room. This would satisfy the "maid was there within the past 24 hours" requirement, and that would be that.

Or they could just bring multiple suitcases up from their car over the 24 hour period, and no one would be the wiser.

Just because Paddock took 4 days to bring all the guns up doesn't mean that he HAD to take 4 days. It was just the slightly more cautious way to go about it.

Never happened.

I never was threatened with ejection from any hotel for any reason.

I did have arguments with the Rio in prior years (before the Paddock incident) where they wanted to enter rooms every 3 days. I was able to talk them out of it every year, but one particular year (I think 2015), the housekeeping supervisor decided to overrule the front desk and forced the maid to go into the room.

I happened to return to the room when she was in there with 2 other people (not sure who they were -- some other employees), and she was literally crying, because she had already promised me not to go in, and really didn't want to do this.

"My boss force me, my boss force me! I no want to!", she said, with tears streaming down before I even said anything.

I told her not to worry, and I wasn't mad at her.

I marched down to the VIP room and asked WTF happened here, and they sheepishly admitted that the notes indicated that the housekeeping supervisor decided to overrule them, which wasn't his place to do. He was on a power trip and didn't like being told by the front desk to deviate from policy, even though they had every right to do so.

I reported this to the hotel manager, and let's just say that supervisor got a "talking to" and didn't do it again.

Anyway, I don't even bother trying to talk them out of it in post-Paddock Vegas, for obvious reasons.

BTW I checked out on July 10, and they hadn't entered on July 7, 8, or 9, despite the claim that the check could be "every 24 hours, but probably more like every 48".

Room was checked on July 6 (after I had been there 4 days), and that was it.

But legally, if they institute something and do it ineffectively...then I dont think they are off the hook from lawsuits. I think it makes them even more liable because they recognize there is a problem and they take a cheap ineffective way to solve it.

all this does is tells a wouldbe killer not to accumulate guns in the room over a period of days....they should bring them up and do their damage within 24 hours. How does this solve anything

A landlord is allowed to do background checks on all tenants. So I guess it could be argued that the 2 occupants are not similar in the eyes of landlords/hotel managers. And in alot of states a landlord can enter your home as long as he gives you proper notice. Sothe hotels are giving everyone proper notice in some way when they register. Probably in something they sign along with their rates and such that they sign anyway at the check in desk.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that the MB shooter wasn't just some dirtbag who booked his stay with Expedia; he was an orca (baby whale) fully comped by a host.

He had a big suite, not a small room.

What are the chances that Ma and Pa Kettle, staying in an average room on their own dime, would have been able to sneak in an arsenal like he did?

Maybe they should focus more on the comped guests in suites than on the hoi polloi in the cheap rooms.

before the shooting and now, you can bring in suitcases of arms, hand grenades, flame throwers,machetes without being questioned or noticed. A xray machine with trained guards would at least help solve that hole in security.

All the new policy does is say to the bad men.....please act quickly within 24 hours once you bring the weapons into the room because we will not tolerate a cache of weapons in a room for more than 24-48 hours at a time. Soif you are a terrorist with a few knapsacks of grenades....set them off quickly or else you will be ejected.

Cousin Eddie says to get a $1500 trailer if you don't like room checks.

I've spent half my life in hotels around the world and never experienced a "room check". Why? Probably because they're annoying and useless. Paddock brought all those guns to his room and it made no sense. He only needed the main weapon, a backup, ammo, and a handgun. Not hard to hide that stuff from what will obviously always be lazy, shoddy room checks.

When travelling alone I never like my room disturbed either unless I'm in it more than 4 days. Who besides mickeycrimm needs their sheets changed in a hotel anyway?

Now we'd like to hear from redietz on this. We'd like his perspective on the Gold Coast, Orleans, downtown hotels, and other gems where he gets all those sports betting comps. Or does his gay Boeing boss friend from LA have the final say as they ride the bus into town?

I'll be staying at the Orleans in two weeks. I will not defend the Orleans, as LarryS can do a better job than me. It's one thing LarryS and I agree on.

I will not defend taking the LuxBus, although I'll be flying this trip. The Lamborghini, in case anyone saw it in the Retro Road Trip thread, is a no go, as the wear on tires costs almost two bucks a mile.

I agree with Dan on the room check thing. I have it on good authority that the default code on room safes in Las Vegas is the same for the majority of them.

I want housekeeping to come in when I don't hang the DND sign and to stay away when I do, which is rare. I'm not for mandated room checks. That seems absurd to me if there are no other security measures (such as metal detectors) in place. As has been stated, high powered rifles can be broken down to fit in luggage. What is the point of a room check when they won't open your luggage if you're not in the room, and they probably won't even flip over a mattress to check under there either.

I wonder what you guys would say if there were metal detectors, and bomb sniffing dogs, and xrays of you and all your bags when you came onto the property, and they swept your room with metal detectors once a day, and there were no more adjoining rooms?

metal detectors at airports are a way of life and travel by air has skyrocketed despite their initial presence of metal detectors decades ago.

A year or so after 9-11 I remember going to a casino on the strip..it may have been the Bellagio.....and there was someone checking my trunk as i pulled into the parking structure. I didnt mind it at all. In the world we live in, I dont feel inconvenienced by that. As long as I can see that it has a real value.

Checking of a room has no real value. Its just a casinos saying "look at us, we are doing something that costs us no extra money to give you a phoney sense of security. Weapons can be in a locked suitcase. Then what. Someone can bbring a suitcase of automatic and assault rifles to a room and immediately kick out the window and start shooting. There is no reason they need to wait. So then what.....wouldnt an Xray machine have been a little more helpful than a possible room check 24 hours after the shooting.

Terrorists look at vegas a a prime target based on the lifestyle it represents.Nothing would please them more than to make a statement about the decadence of the americans. And what better place to do it. Its coming people. And when it does it doesnt have to be a dude accumulating grenades and rifles over time. It can be a swift assault, just minutes after room check in. I am surprised with all the casinos as a group has to lose...they dont do something more effective to protect the property..and more importantly protect the world view of fear of dying if visiting vegas. Heck, it doesnt even have to be a room check in....soneone wearng a vest of grenades can just walk into the center of the casino...or at a long line at checkin at 2pm.

The ghost town that vegas will turn into after a major attack would be more hurtful than the property damage and life damage inflicted.

And knowing that they are a big target....the best they can do to protect theirproperty and worldwide reputation is "room checks"??????

My guess is that eventually there will be metal derectors in order to enter initially. But only after some massive eventto give the casino financial incentive. But by then it may be too late. The reduction of visitors caused by the massive event because of the expectation that there is more to come from an organized group....will cause these bloated massive in size casinos to crumble financially under their own massive weight.

A terrorist act doesnt have to take down an entire building in vegas like with the wolrd trade center. The act(s) itself can make the loss of future business cause the massive bloated casinos to fall financially...which is just as good as blowing it up entirely. A slow painful death would ensue.

yes there are dozens of scenarios the average person can thinnk of....but the casinos and all the patrons are taking a "see no evil, hear no evil" stance.

Its not a matter of "if"........but when isis or the like gets involved, vegas may never be the same.

I know NYC is doinf ok....but vegas is a totally different animal. In NYC it wasnt as if broadway theaters were blow up.....it was an office building. So people dont think the attractions are in danger. Its an erroneous thought...but at least people who want to go to NYC can make themselves believe that central park, the theaters, and the restaurants are all safe.

But if terrorists hit vegas....more likely it will be the casinos.....it wont be the outlet shopping center, or some office building.

And once that happens, unlike NYC...there will be a cloud of pending doom over the biggest attraction of vegas......the casinos
