The Singer Five

I just got off the phone and had a friend in LV make these bets on the NFL for me today. I rarely sports bet, but I'm posting this for several reasons:

1. If I bust out I at 0-5 I will depart the forum happily ever after, for good.
2. If I go 5-0 mickey will admit I'm even better than his morning shit.

We've all see redietz make continual unsubstantiated claims of being some type of sports betting savant. He never posts anything until AFTER the games are played. Even Dan posts prior.

I put $100 on each game, and I also had my friend play these games in a parlay (he said that is a stupid bet) also for $100. Since I haven't done this in years I don't really know what the payouts would be, but a win is a win.

NO +1.5 over St. Louis
Balt -1 over Pit
Minn -5 over Det
Cle +8 over KC
SD +1 over Sea

So start cheering....for me to lose?

First, you have no friends Singer, not in Vegas, not anywhere.

Second, you could go 5-0 (I don't think you will) and you would still be a loser... BIG loser.

And all 5 bets and the parlay are -EV bets. Those of a lifetime losing gambling addict. Because THAT's what you are, you old fool.

I believe my records in "Tipsters or Gypsters?" -- some of which are in the Retro Road Trip thread -- would count as "substantiated." I think public contest records would count as "substantiated." Or has the word taken on new meaning?

Not to mention all offshores have complete records of all plays made. And all partners have complete email records for at least the last 10 years.

For better or worse, I'm currently tied for sixth in the Northbet NFL handicapping contest (no spreads). I'm tied for 34th in the Heritage Sports Race to the Super Bowl contest.

A parlay is, in the words of an assistant of bookmaker Mike Stockunas who was put on the witness stand, "a really stupid bet."

I'm no sportsbetting luminary, and I wasn't whenI did this on LVA just to show up that idiot Fezzik a decade ago....which I did. However, because I've been successful in just about anything I ever did (including filing a +EV bankruptcy in 1996) I have no doubt that I could figure out how to make money from betting NFL games--maybe not this week, but over the last half of the season plus the playoffs. After all, does it really make any sense to bet the games in the first half of the season?

And no, regardless of how great I may become at this, I will never stoop to the lows someone like redietz does and attempt to sell picks to people with disposable income.

Today was the classic teaching moment for why parlays are a bad thing.

Argentino went 3-2, which should be a profitable day that one would take any time. Instead of winning, however, the day netted a loss due to the addition of a parlay bet.

In general, and more importantly, parlays are a bad and sloppy thing because they require that the wager be made at a single sports book. Since that book is unlikely to have the best number for every game being used in the parlay, you are employing suboptimal numbers.

Ok, lets see here. Singer won 3 ($300), lost 2 (-220) = +$80. But then he lost his $100 parley as well for a grand total for the day of -$20. Looks like road kill for dinner again this week Rob. ;)

Alan I HAVE gotten 2 different mortgages (from 2 different firms) since I have been in Vegas (9 years). And I had less history than I do now. With tax records showing an average income of 98k over the last 6 years, I am quite sure I could have gotten a 3rd Mortgage for my most recent real estate purchase this past summer, except, I paid cash. Cash won from the casinos. Cash won from casinos because I have mathematics on my side. :cool:

Pretty good handicapping Rob. Your friend was correctamundo on the parlay bet. Instead of $100 on a 5 team parlay, try $10 on 10 two team parlays mixed and matched. At 60% win rate you probably would've hit one or two at a tidy profit.

1. I understand a parlay is a bad bet, not the least because of not being able to get the best numbers all at the same book. I've only made about 3 or 4 parlay bets in my life and remember, I had a $40,000+ winner on my last one 6 years ago. So all it takes is one 5-0 week to be a breakout season winner.

2. While my parlay will remain at $100, each week I'm upping my per-game wager by $100, at $500 max. Why not eat better quality road kill each passing week?

3. I'll address the tournament factor that people like redietz, Fezzik and others like to tout as support for their being big shots or something in the sports betting field. To me, tournaments are not barometers--you're playing against other players and you can win even with a not-so-stellar record. Instead, show me someone who puts his picks up BEFORE the games are played and I'll be a believer. The reason I did the Singer Five on LVA was to prove you don't need to be some big deal name in the sports betting world to make some money betting on games. I've always been a big believer in if you are motivated to be good at something...ANYTHING...and if you are not not physically limited, then it can be done by you. I chose to be good at betting NFL games, and although I very infrequently have had the time to do it properly over the years, I have the time now.

Tournaments are not pure barometers, but if they are ATS tournaments, and you cannot beard multiple entries, then they are pretty good indicators that you're doing something correct that season. Where they fall short is that, in this day and age, with spreads moving in college sports as much as they do, WHEN you bet a game is almost as important as WHO you bet.

Much of the actual profit in betting college sports comes from anticipating line moves and shooting for middles. You can be dumb as a rock when it comes to handicapping, but if you can look at a college line and say, "It's gotta move this way," you can still make money.

By the way, in case Argentino didn't understand what he was looking at in the Retro Road Trip thread, the standings in the various "Tipsters or Gypsters?" are not tournament standings. They are obviously a reportage of the actual handicapping records of the participants that year, as monitored by Seattle Times reporter, Mike McCusker.

Classic example tonight of what I mentioned. I took Kent +22 (-120) Monday early because I thought the line was too steep and there was a chance of bad weather (not the case). I could have done better, as +22 1/2 could have been had right out of the box Sunday night at -110, but midweek stand-alone games can draw a lot of fave action, so one has to be a bit careful. I was actually somewhat sloppy, partly because I had no real opinion on the game.

In any event, I'll be laying -17 at the worst the other way tonight for 90% of the wager. I might be able to do better; we'll see.


But this is a prime example of WHEN mattering more than WHO. I have very little opinion on the game itself. I just thought the number was likely to shift down.

For sports aficionados, I will mention that a side effect of doing stuff like this is that you become un-data-mine-able. Nobody can profile what kinds of teams you actually take as straight bets. Some offshores are actually profiling clients these days. When some individuals check the same book with two different accounts, they sometimes get two different numbers. Yes, you can be profiled.

This week's picks: Record so far: 3-2 Down close to $70 (I pay my friend $50/week to place these bets.) Each game below has $200 on it this week except for my LOCK OF THE WEEK which has $300.

Pit -3.5 over Car
Det +6.5 over Chi

Brief suggestion so you don't go nuts: keep the straight play record and tally separate from the parlay record and tally. It'll be less confusing. So you're 3-2 (+$80) on straight plays and 0-1 (-$100) on parlays. Non-experts can follow that cleanly.

Nonetheless, I'm making an addendum to my 5 picks this week. I'm adding one more because I just heard some "inside information" over here from a high profile sports guy.

Because it's an add-on, I only put $100 on it and of course it's not part of the parlay which is still in play. My friend was at a locals casino when I just called him, so he didn't have to make a special trip.

By the way, if I hit a parlay, he gets 10% of the payout.

The addendum is a fascinating game. I'm supposed to take it, based on various value angles. The idea turns my stomach, which is usually a sure sign one is getting value. The line has actually come down significantly, so since I'm not getting the best of it, I have a lovely excuse to not play it. You certainly cannot lay 16 in an NFL game, of course. I'm going to hammer on this point again. Thanks to the addendum game, Argentino showed a profit on straight plays for a second week, but registered a second overall loss due to the inclusion of a parlay wager. Instead of back-to-back profit weeks, it's back-to-back losing weeks. Parlay card wagers are a massive profit source for sports books.

This week: Straight plays: 3-2-1. Profit: $50. Season: 6-4-1. Profit: $120

Parlays: 0-2. Loss: $200

Cumulative Overall Total (COT): -$80

I'm using a vig of 10% to keep the numbers rounded.

Suggestions:

1) Forget about the expenses thing. The people reading it would have varied expenses, if any, so I wouldn't sweat it. You may say, "Well, that's real accounting," but it can work the other way, too. For example, if I were playing your games, at one site I am eligible for a 25% loss rebate every six months. Those are idiosyncratic things, so everybody would be different. I'd just keep the tally without expenses.

2) If you occasionally make a straight bet on a -105 time bracket somewhere (the Westin used to do that), it's fine to include that.

For instance--the Colts are crushing the Titans this week. Last week the Pats, who I picked, got crunched by Tennessee for reasons that can only be attributed to pathetic effort by Brady and co. Yet NE wiped out Indy earlier.

You dodged a bullet on the end in the Washington game.

That extra half point came in handy with Jacksonville.

There's no dodging bullets or lucky endings with my picks. It's all skill acquired from the motivation to want to be good at sports betting in NFL games.

I'm 3-0 so far today. The Cards are behind 7-0 already in a game being played 10 miles from here. Surely they can win this game against the worthless Raiders....or will I be looking at yet another 3-2 week?
