A first for me

I am sure those of you that play a good deal of VP have experienced this a number of times, but it was a first for me. Holding no cards, drawing 5 new ones for a royal.

The funny thing was I was playing through a small amount of coin in as I do to keep minimum offers coming and I was with a friend who is a non-AP, non-gambler. I mean he knows zero about any kind of gambling. So I was trying to explain some of VP play. After drawing a hand of crap, nothing worth holding, I explained that there was nothing worth holding and we would draw 5 new cards, hoping to hit almost anything. I think I said, maybe we would get lucky and hit 4ok. Instead a small $2000 Royal.

Just interesting because like I said, I never remember doing that.

Where is my royal? I have yet to get a royal. However, I should say I only play video poker to use up my free play, but many years I have been doing this and still no royal, and that includes just practicing at home for fun mostly at this site. https://www.freeslots.com/poker.htm

PS. I should say I did get a royal playing deuces wild with the deuces, but that is fairly easy.

I've played multi-millions of hands of video poker and I've hit the royals every way possible from flopping it, to holding four cards, holding 3 cards, holding 2 cards, holding 1 card and throwing all five cards away and hitting the royal. But throwing all five cards away and hitting the royal occurred on a spin poker. I've never done it on single line.

The draw five hand is also the longest odds way of hitting a royal. At 9/6 Jacks you will get a draw five hand about every 31 deals. With just 47 cards left in the deck and 4 royal combinations the freq. is 383,485. But about 20% of the time you draw five you will be throwing away a ten. That eliminates one royal combination. That makes the freq. 511,000. The whole thing averages to roughly 409,000. So:

31 X 409,000 is 1.3 million rounded. Pretty long frequency.

I didn't multiply it out right. It's more like 12.7 million. Thanks for the correction.

I've got one. Happened on ten play.

I've never had a royal from a 4 card royal draw, a dealt royal or a redraw royal - and I've played fairly regularly for the last 10 years. I imagine I've played enough for a dealt royal cycle, the redraw, no way.

I had my first draw 3 to a royal last month, all considering single-hand play.

I have had all kinds. Funny ones are holding 1 and 2 cards. You aren't even thinking about a Royal, especially holding one card...you are just holding a high card.

I wanna say, that I have had more Royals from holding 1, 2, 3 cards, and now zero cards, than I have from holding 4 cards. I wanna say that, but I am not sure it is true. It may be selective memory causing me to "wanna" say that.

I finally hit a dealt royal a little while back. Still a little salty since I had to split it 4 ways. Had I hit it when playing on my own entirely, would’a been $20-40k, perhaps a lot more.

Obv hit a royal holding 1-4 cards. But 99% sure I’ve never hit a redraw royal. There is one time when it MAY have happened but it was on 5c 100-play and part way through the next hand I thought “did I just hit a redraw royal? How do I have a couple hundred extra?” But I think that’s sorta unlikely.

Odds on the different routes to hitting a royal on 9/6 Jacks:

Dealt Royal 649,740

Hold zero cards and draw five = 12.7 million.

Holding 1 card and drawing 4 you will hold 1 high card every 6.25 games. Chance of catching the other 4 to the royal is 178,365. 6.25 X 178,365 = 1,114,781

Holding 2 cards and drawing 3 you will hold a 2-card royal every 12.315 games and catch the other 3 every 16,215 draws. Freq. = 199,128

Holding 3 cards and drawing 2 you will hold a 2-card royal every 91.7 hands and catch the other 2 every 1081 draws. Freq. = 99,128

Holding 4 cards and drawing 1 you will hold a 4-card royal every 2,777 games. Freq. of catching the 1 royal card is 47. So this route the chance is 130,519.

The fastest route to the royal is holding 3 and drawing 2. 2nd fastest is holding 4 and drawing 1. The whole thing averages to a royal every 40,391 games. This is based on the strategy where the royal pays 800 for 1.

I have hit royals every way EXCEPT after dumping all five cards. Congrats KJ!!

I do not play video poker now but may try it again as my friend likes to play full pay pick-em. Many, many years ago I hit my one and only hand pay Royal for 2k on a 9/6 Job at the Boomtown casino in Vegas. Very funny part was when the hand pay occured I do not remember how many employees were standing there but there was at least a few. Strange thing "funny now" someone counted out 19 hundreds and 5 twenty dollar bills which I thanked the lady and put all the money in my pocket. She made me play one more hand which was two pair and they all left. I immediately cashed out to look for my wife who was in a small slot tournament. When she was done I told her what happened and said they needed 5 twenties to finish the pay off as they ran out of hundreds. I figured it out about two years latter.

I have one razgu royal on dollars at the River Bar in the Flamingo Laughlin. I also have one holding a 10, which I've only held twice in my playing life. I was getting a lot of crummy deals and losers, so after 2 straight sweepers-to-nothing another came up with a 10. I held it out of frustration.

Rob this is one of the kinds of things which makes it so hard for me to take you seriously as an AP. Discipline is the cornerstone of advantage play. Discipline is what separates AP's from gamblers.

We all get frustrated, and I am not going to say that I have never fallen victim to that frustration. But each time you do, you are creating just a little bit higher hill to climb as far as long-term winning. And THAT is what it is all about...long-term.

That is because on the redraw Royals you have already discarded five shitty cards, regardless that one of those discards maybe a ten at times.

That might be true if you have an equal amount of dealt hands to redraw hands. When playing video poker you are rarely redrawing the entire hand. Because of that, you should have way more dealt Royals than redraw Royals. I have one really bad on Dealt Royals I don't think I have ever had one on a multi-line game.

So I had another kind of "first" yesterday. Again, this might be something that those of you that play much more VP than me have encountered and had to deal with. It had to deal with holding a card which doesn't "hold". I certainly have had machines, as I am sure everyone has where the buttons, sometimes skipped. Occasionally even costs me a small payout, three of a kind or such and I let it go. Yesterday playing $1, bonus, I held 3,4,6,7 of hearts. I drew the 5 of hearts but in the process my 4 of hearts disappeared and turning into a jack of clubs. I was like WTF?

I wasn't going to let my $250 payout go without at least making some noise. I figured that is all it would come to, I would complain and be told "thems the breaks". So the slot attendant opens the machine, pushes a few buttons and is able to see that my original 5 cards were 3,4,6,7 hearts and something else. But it said that I only held the 3,6,7, which was wrong. So she calls a manager, who comes over, verified that my original cards were 3,4,6,7 hearts and I drew the 5. She was very nice and accommodating. Said she plays VP and knows these machines sometimes skip and she authorizes the attendant to pay me. I was very pleasantly surprised at how it was handled.

Just a few minutes ago, a lady hit this while I was picking off plays on the machine next to her.

When this happens the outcome is entirely in your hands, even if the button proves to be faulty. If you treat the responding employees with respect, chances are they will sympathize with you and you will get paid. But they aren't required to pay you. I've seen angry, hysterical people argue and shout and they don't get a thing out of it. Players have to remember they're dealing with other human beings who rarely have power in their hands. These people will go into the discussion expecting civility, but if they detect even the slightest touch of irritability it will set them off. That is why you were pleasantly surprised when it was over.

Happened to me before. On STP with a big multiplier, got dealt something like JJ696. Accidentally held JJ69. Talked to a slot attendant who wasn't super enthusiastic, but I got a manager to check it out and they opened it, saw the deal/draw cards, we figured out what I "should" have gotten, and I got paid the difference.

I disagree with all of the "what I shoulda got" situations. By the time you corrected the holds, you would've gotten different draw cards. You don't deserved to be paid on these mistakes.

I had 3 non-dream card dealt royals
1 redraw
can't remember the other ones like holding 1-4.

3 dream card royals. Those are fun.

Of course you deserve to get paid, at least in terms of the timing. Nothing is changed if I hit draw right "now" or wait 5 seconds then hit draw. I still have a 1/47 chance on a 4-card hold and 1/1081 chance on a 3 card hold.

What's your solution then, if someone makes a 3RF hold over 4RF because a button sticks? Should the casino re-set the hand and let you draw again?

You have to push the button a la Lawrence Welk- a o:rolleyes:ne and a two....;)
