I'm going to go out on a limb and say that casinos in LV will be closing their doors in about a week. The question is whether they shutter before March 17 or not.
I'm gonna bet that the limb cracks and you bust up your old ass in the fall.
Our Governor just held a televised News conference and I was expecting he would announce that casinos would be closing...he didn't. I know how Nevada protects the casino industry, even allowing some things and policies that are probably illegal (That's another discussion), but I still think they will announce casino closing very soon, maybe tomorrow. I mean come on, all the sports leagues, schools, Broadway, Disneyland are closing. Airlines are cancelling flights and already laying off employees. There are literally thousands of studies of what correlates with someone's income in the United States. The positive correlates include race, parents' income, parents' education, education, parents' marital status, IQ, and on and on. Anything I know is dated, but back in the 80's, when Michigan did much of the big survey work, I believe parents' income was the top positive correlate, but you can check me on that. I am out of touch with how those variables have shuffled around in importance in this country. The problem with trying to assign "hard work" as a correlate is that (1) "work" has an actual specific definition most of the time, namely calories burned, and calories burned doesn't correlate with income, (2) "work" can be defined as hours invested in training or wage job, and while I think that there is some correlation, other variables are much stronger, (3) it's been shown that for some sub-groups, namely college students, working more than about 15/16 hours per week in jobs unrelated to your degree is actually a negative to future income because the time that could be spent becoming expert is spent on something unrelated. So the latter points firmly to the wealthy having an enormous advantage.
Best that I know, parents' income and education level are probably still the two biggest positive correlates.
Now you can argue that correlation is not cause-and-effect, and you would be absolutely correct.
All of the above points will, I think, be moot in a few years, as there will be programs that will be able to take your life variables and plot your probabilistic course through life and project income and "success" and so on. Of course, these programs currently exist in various forms, but I can't see a top-down plutocratic culture being motivated to publicize a public game of "let's see how you'd likely do if you were me."

Neither of my parents went to college. Dad didn't graduate high school. I'm not rich, but I do make well over 100k a year for basically a part time job (running my business). Thats not counting gambling stuff. That suits me fine as I don't need much $$. I'll always be able to figure out a way to make money until I'm very old. I have multiple job skills. Just the fact I bootstrapped a company that does near 1 million in revenue is enough to get me in the door at many places. blah blah. I have a business for a lifestyle, not so I can buy shiny trinkets during my time on this Earth. That sort of behavior is for *******.
From all that I can understand, I'm mostly liberal because I want to see the wealthy taxed more. All the poor dumb people have been fed a lie that they won't have a job if this happens, so the US increasingly approaches the structure of a third world country. Also not a big fan of unneeded wars but IMO that isn't a liberal view. I don't even think it is "conservative" to be a hawk. Such views are just more lies fed to people. I'm also more pro-second amendment than a lot of the big trump fans on here. Honestly, I think I've had more people from the left defriend me on FB over my political posts than the right. I actually have higher expectations of them as people.

I don't know about your last paragraph, and I too learned about this stuff a long time ago, but you pretty much described income correlations as I learned them and understand them without taking the time to insult anyone. I think Alaska has an unusually high opportunity quotient for some one just coming to the workforce with a really strong work ethic. Even here though, work ethic guy often has to line up behind guy who the foreman is my Uncle.

Alaska is at 3 cases as of last night and all 3 of these look to be from infections caught outside. There is no evidence that I am aware of that community transmission is occurring here. Even so, schools are staying closed an extra week after spring break, Providence Hospital has restricted visitors and won't let their staff work after traveling for 14 days, Anchorage is trying to protect the homeless population by converting an arena for temporary housing, and has just done the restaurant/bar closures last night. I live in a very conservative borough which has announced that they don't have the power to mandate closures. Alaska is a pretty conservative state. This doesn't feel like panic or politics. It is more like we got a lot of warning before we were affected and government and private leaders are trying to take advantage of that to try to institute some best practices.

As Ron pointed out in a different thread, 20000-40000 people die of influenza each year in the U.S. . Put that against the 100 or so covid deaths observed so far. Even so, schools are staying closed an extra week after spring break, Providence Hospital has restricted visitors and won't let their staff work after traveling for 14 days, Anchorage is trying to protect the homeless population by converting an arena for temporary housing, and has just done the restaurant/bar closures last night. I live in a very conservative borough which has announced that they don't have the power to mandate closures. Alaska is a pretty conservative state. This doesn't feel like panic or politics. It is more like we got a lot of warning before we were affected and government and private leaders are trying to take advantage of that to try to institute some best practices.
I'd rather be in Alaska than here, that's for sure.
Disney's daughter, when learning that one of the Disney parks did a big closing parade/party, said something like, "You've got to be fucking kidding."
The state just opened a testing tent today about a half mile down the road on ETSU property. They want only those with symptoms tested right now, I think. Will check on that tomorrow. The reason there are so few American cases is simply that there hasn't been anyone tested. Ohio leaders think they're looking at 100,000 infected in Ohio when the testing gets underway.
Regarding Dr Drew-
A big part of rightwing propaganda lately is the incredible out of control homeless population in liberal California. I hear it fairly often. If thats what he has been going on about lately, that jives with my impression of Dr Drews video. All he effectively did for the first half of the clip was "Don't listen to the media, they are causing the panic". He never said what falsehoods they were spreading. Seemed weird AF to me, as if his new cash spot was pandering to a certain demographic.
Going a bit further he is pandering to the mindset setup by Trump. He's smart but a snake. (Which oddly jives with my impression of him and his exploitive show where he got the most pathetic old washed up drug addicts on TV as a freak show.) That stuff is good for society but lol. More honorable making ones off machines or any AP stuff and thats not saying much IMO.

Dr. Drew is no more an expert on coronavirus than half a dozen people I personally know. My girlfriend's daughter is a molecular biologist with a doctorate working at UCSD, whose hospital is where many of the original victims were checked. She's certainly more qualified than Dr. Drew. I have a friend who's a notch below her in terms of virus knowledge. Like Dr. Drew, he's an addiction specialist. Unlike Dr. Drew, he has large grants. Also unlike Dr. Drew, he's doing the hands-on research. He would never consider himself an "expert" on viruses.
For those who do not spend much time hanging out in academia, an expert in my mind is someone who (1) has recently published peer reviewed papers in the field in question, (2) actively works in the field in question, and/or (3) teaches at a university level in the field in question (not as an adjunct) while doing (1) or (2) also. A "professional" in a field is usually not an "expert." So when professionals such as Dr. Drew or Sonjay Gupta (a neurosurgeon on CNN) give advice, you have to trust that they are assembling and synthesizing information from actual infectious experts. They themselves would not be considered expert in infectious diseases, although they have general knowledge far exceeding ours as laymen.
Dr. Anthony Fauci would be considered an expert's expert. He's been at NIH forever. He's seen everything. If you're going to listen to anyone, listen to him. If Dr. Drew quotes him, great. if Sonjay Gupta quotes him, great. And finally, to be fair, Gupta as a neurosurgeon should, one would suspect, know considerably more about infectious diseases than Dr. Drew.

All things considered I think Trump is doing an outstanding job. Trump uses rhetoric to keep the people calm and the left says he's underestimating the virus. The very first case in U.S. was Jan 21. Ten days later Trump banned flights from China. Left says he is a racist, zenophobe for doing it. If he hadn't put on the travel ban they would have said he was harming Americans. Just this one move saved thousands of American lives.
Trump was leading on the coronavirus long before the breakout. He's cut more red tape at the FDA than any President is history. Experts are saying its had a big effect on working towards a cure.
That's just a couple things off the top of my head.

Yes, Russians are likely this world's greatest political operatives. They've been so for decades. Everyone in the KGB is involved. Russia was always poor so they had to rely on "active measures". There is no other person alive today that the country could have had in charge of this thing, who could have instilled more trust and confidence through his actions than the guy who's been doing it. If there's one thing more important than any individual's livelihood, it's their safety in a time of crisis. Even if the market doesn't bounce back Trump will easily win anyway. People will NEVER forget the amazing way he showed his leadership through all this.
I am not a Donald Trump Fan....anything but. :rolleyes: But I think this week may be his best week as President. He has for the most part acted presidential. I think he has listened to the experts and understands how serious this is. And I think he is sincerely doing the best he can in a difficult situation. Time will tell if the response will be enough.
One thing I am a little disappointed on is his reluctance to order plants like GM to start making ventilators. He has the power to do that under the war powers act, which he invoked last night, but today he said he is holding off on that, despite that it looks like within 45 days we will be 100,00 short of needed ventilators. For comparison, Britain is having it's Rolls Royce plant starting to make ventilators beginning today. Since some of the car companies are shutting down anyway, Trump should order GM and others to make ventilators for the next 6 weeks. I think he will get there, but is dragging his feet just a bit.
Andrew Cuomo of New York and Gavin Newsom of California have both commended Trump for what he has done for both those states. And these are the two bluest states in the Union.Quote:
