Do casino workers want to return?

As you know I live in an apartment complex with many residents whose jobs are linked to casinos. Last night I asked a couple of my neighbors if they really wanted the casinos to reopen?

One neighbor I discovered works in IT for a major locals casino company. While he is not on the casino floor he said he'd rather not return to work now.

Another is my neighbor who does the gig work when conventions are in town. It's a moot question for him because there are no conventions and he wants that special unemployment.

Another neighbor is a dealer. The answer is no. Players can decide what risks they want to take and when but dealers either show up or lose their jobs and it's too early to think it's safe. She's getting minimal pay thru the end of the month and has benefits including health thru June. Of course she is losing all tip income.

We've been looking at the reopening of the casinos from the players' angle but not from the employees' angle. Players might accept the risk of exposure but the employees?

I'd really like to speak to or hear from a cocktail server because they probably have the closest personal contact with the public than any other casino patron. Not only do servers deliver drinks but they pick up empty glasses and bottles, handle tip money and have direct face to face contact -- unlike a dealer who is separated from players by a table.

I hope you aren’t using a sample set of three to determine if casino workers want to go back to work. And if one cocktail server responds, that doesn’t mean this is how all cocktail servers think.

I know some local casinos workers and a week before the casinos shut down in my area, they didn’t want them to shut down. They wanted to continue working, and they understood the risks.

It’s not working with the public that makes you high risk to getting the virus. It’s working with the public and not being protected. The main mode of transmission is through the air. The dealers should be okay if they wear a surgical mask, and the servers just need to wear a mask and gloves. This is what protects nurses when they work with infected patients.

Actually a hot cocktail sever in a surgical mask sounds kind of sexy. When can we go back?

Obviously I'm not using three people for statistical accuracy. I'm starting a discussion, I thought.
Casino employees aren't nurses; they didn't sign on to be exposed to illnesses just as I didn't sign on to be near illnesses in my office job.

Is any forum member a casino employee?

I'm reading news reports about how the unions here in Vegas want more protections and benefits for casino workers.

I know gamblers are different from casino workers. They can pick and choose when to play and even if they want to play. That choice is certainly a luxury.

I wonder how many gamblers who want the casinos to reopen would also volunteer inside a hospital for four hours a day?

Sounds like an offshoot of the extra $600 a week in UC compensation through July 31st. There is always a segment of the population who will take advantage of free money and use it to justify not working.

I know you started a discussion on casino workers, but how are they any different from the people out there working now. From Grocery Workers, to Lowe’s employees to the local guy at the Burger shop. They have been working through this, dealing with customers everyday because it’s their JOB and they didn’t have a choice if they want to keep a roof over their head and feed their family.

These casino workers called back will have a choice when called back. Go to work under the conditions their employers set or quit and lose the unemployment because work IS available. I would believe the casinos would offer early retirement options for long term older high risk employees.

It’s not about essential, if we are going to move forward with the economy people are going to have to go back to work. Not sure why you think they are special. Casinos need to get open, sports need to get back, car dealerships need to open, amusement parks need to open or we are looking at 20-25% Unemployment.

But if you want to make it essential, I would say casinos and other businesses are essential if the state wants to collect taxes. Hard to provide the services they do without tax revenue. Very few stories have been written on how low the revenues will be for March and April. In PA sales tax is due tomorrow for March, I can only imagine the shortfall.

And that is why America is At Will Employment. No one is required to work a job at any time. It’s a choice.

You're correct Mr Boz we are facing massive unemployment here. My office job is linked to doing work for attorneys who need papers filed and researched. The courts are shut down through the end of June. No hearings or depositions until July. My office job won't continue if this is extended. I can't do any research or filing except thru home computers and email service. But no court actions so no resolution and no payments.

But some will see my job as more essential than a casino job. There are people waiting for a divorce and people waiting to set up an LLC.

While actual court hearings are shut down the paper shuffling goes on.

Frankly the WSOP continues online too. Maybe we let bona-fide American companies like the WSOP offer main stream casino games? With live dealers like some online casinos do now?

Yea, I not sure why Nevada hasn’t jumped on that. PA and NJ are doing huge numbers online. Nothing like the actual casinos were, but certainly a nice incremental income at $21M with casinos closed half the month.

April numbers should double.

From one study I read the average time it takes someone on unemployment to find a job is dependent on how long the benefits last. If its six months the average time to find a job is 7 months. In European countries they can draw unemployment for 2 to 3 years depending on country. Average time to find a job if unemployment last 2 years is 2 years, 1 month. With 3 years it 3 years, 1 month.

A good percentage of people will not work as long as they are drawing unemployment.

Nevada is one of those states where if you quit a job for no good reason it's just a six week penalty on the unemployment. Then they are eligible for 4.5 months.

It wouldn't surprise me if this sort of thing (US-regulated online casinos beyond just only New Jersey and Pennsylvania) for anyone gambling within a US state or territory was just around the corner. With regard to Nevada, I can't see them not adding online casino gaming (non-poker) to the online poker rooms.

This is a made-up story for the sake of keeping busy. If it's true then casino workers there represent the stupidiest people in the city. They should ALL be chomping at the bit to get back to work, just like the rest of America. And if casinos never open again then they're free to look for jobs elsewhere. Get some backbones. This is a defining time for this Millenial or whatever you call it generation. Take it on with dignity and respect, and leave the whining at the door.

Not only this, but casino ADDICTION. I found myself formulating some new ideas for strategy changes- made me realize the hold the casinos had on my entertainment choices. Will I have the resolve to stay away until I have proper discipline.

But this thread did make me think of one government program I would support. For all those people that are too lazy or afraid to work, our government should give them a FREE one-way plane ticket to Greece. Greece loves freeloaders and liberals love handouts so this could be a marriage made in heaven.

I think that what jb's is trying to tell us all is that he's addicted not not to AP'ing. I mean, that his life revolves around coming here to tell us all how smart he is compared to us for our not AP'ing. Somewhere in between.

Look. Two extremes. Do nothing at all, carry on. Or, the global response of one shut-down over a solid couple of months to kill everything, all the flu's, and who knows what else, all at once. Not too practical, or even practicable. As they say, the hardest action to take is no action, but, here we have no action at all.

Maybe, the best action is the optimized, but non-trivialized, long-term approach of built-in "contact tracing" that is each person being responsible for, in contact with, a handful of persons outside the family. The linear sort that doesn't "ball up" into the usual cliques.

Old folks homes, and, schools? Well, those have to be "busted up". Real and actual community integration. The extremes into the average.

I mean, again, maybe, the virus, itself, is optimized, so, it doesn't matter what we try to do about it, over the long-run. That we may be left to more-philosophical points of view. Maybe, figuratively speaking, perhaps, the virus is punishment for abandonment, nay, unnecessary harm, of those left without a "voice" in society. I mean, that the perpetrators, themselves, are left to take less than no action, or, action that makes things worse. Who knows.
