Tipping in Las Vegas casinos

This subject comes up occasionally in other threads; I think it deserves a thread of its own.

I haven't been to Las Vegas for several years, and base my opinion on what I saw then; if things have changed I am unaware of it.

In the past one thing that always pissed me off about Las Vegas casinos was the lack of self-serve beverage stations; hell it's the middle of the desert, people get damned thirsty.

Not even a convenient water fountain.

Which leaves the CW's.

Why should anyone tip a CW to bring them a glass of water, when the water should be readily available and not require the employment of a CW?

As for maids I never leave them a tip: why should I?

I may tip a craps crew if I am doing well, but that is sort of like throwing bread in the water: I've had several times where after tipping them the crew "forgets" to take my bet down and leaves it up when it should come down (e.g. on a crowded table).

So far as tipping for a slot handpay: don't bother; do they tip you when you lose?

I understand AP's have a rep for being tight due to their reluctance to tip: again, why should they tip?

They're at work, and money given away means less food on the table.

I believe tipping is a subject that people often lie about. They tend to inflate what they give, to make themselves look and feel better. I totally agree on not tipping the maids, overpaid 6 figure valets( I avoid valet at all cost ) Rude entitled dealers, lazy and entitled slot attendants. Princess servers who aren't happy with 1 dollar a drink and give attitude, get nothing from me after that. I will tip good service, but if I sense any kind of entitlement, I'll give squat, with no qualms or shame. People don't seem to realize, a lot of these tipped employees, make well over 100k a year. The servers at high end joints can make well over 200 k a year. Not bad for a job, that requires no skill or education.

Oh wow, a tipping thread. Ok, I'll bite.

There are certain service type jobs that tipping is customary. Bartenders, food servers, bellhops, hotel maids to name a few. I don't even know how THAT happened, but it did, so whatever. But a person dealing cards, is not the same, in my opinion. A person dealing cards is is just a non skill low level job and it is not "customary" most of them. Do you tip the cashier at cvs? That is equivalent to the dealer in my opinion.

Somewhere along the line, I guess someone decided to tip a dealer after a winning session. AS if the dealer did something special to contribute to that winning session. I mean if they DID, that is illegal and your tipping makes you part of that collusion. Now that has evolved into flat out tip whoring by dealers. They think they are entitled to a portion of winnings. And even worse than that, they think non winning players should be tipping. I just see no reason why that is a job that should be tipped for. It has often been said that a monkey could be taught to deal the cards and now, machines are doing that task. And here is the really funny part....some of those electronic type machines have a place for you to tip the electronic virtual dealer. :D And I suppose there are suckers doing so.

Now hand pays. recreational gamblers probably enjoy hand pays, but any AP would rather not have them. Just print out our voucher and let us cash it out at the kiosk or cage. But the law says over $1200 is a hand pay. So I don't hold that against the person doing the hand pay. It's not their fault that is the law. So I am willing to tip a bit. People will call me cheap, but I think 1% is fair. That is $20 for $2000 or $40 for $4000 ($1 royal). Now of course the hand pay attendant thinks they should get $100 for a $4000 hand pay. They can think that all they want, they aren't getting that from me.

A slot attendant who thinks He or She deserves 100$ on 4000$, is in the entitlement category.... NO SOUP 4 YOU !

OK, so I didn't actually mention how I tip at a blackjack table. It isn't much. I don't tip as I am playing. When it comes time to leave, I will only tip if I have the odd $2.50 from blackjack (with a minimum wager of $25, this occurs most sessions). That is it. If I have $2.50, I tip it, which is not appreciated if at anytime the count when high and I was betting bigger.

The only exception I have, is if I come across a fast dealer, who is just dealing, not attempting to converse. Especially if I am playing heads up. That situation is valuable to me. It allows for a lot of EV in a short period, avoiding downtime and exposure, so I will tip $5 at the end of my session (or $7.50, if I have that odd amount).

If dealers don't like it, they should find something else to do, or ask their billion dollar casino owners to pay a decent wage.

I've seen and heard, low rolling craps players, milk there time at the table betting min, when there's known Whale's/George's at the table. Usually high rolling show offs, who want to be seen on the main floor. These low rollers rely on the tips from these big shots. How much of a advantage play it is I have no clue, but it works for guys, who have very small bankrolls, I would imagine.

I always wonder what kind of person has the ability to show up at a casino day after day playing the same mundane game over and over all the while losing. Even more amazing is the people that actually have had some past success in life that lose their life roll to the game. Then continue to play whatever money crosses their fingers after that. Sickening.

And those are the people who like to tell everyone else when and how much to tip. I don't like it when people are complete stiffs and never tip anyone for anything. I really don't like it when people criticize others for lack of tipping. Everyone should mind their own business when it comes to other people tipping or not. If you think others are not tipping enough, then make a point to tip more.

I tip cocktail waitress $1 per drink because I requested the service.

If a bar machine spits out a voucher saying the casino owes me a drink. I do not tip for that drink as the establishment told me that I am owed it.

I tip $5 for for a single server delivered meal. Whether that meal costs $5 or $50.

I tip $10 per person in a multi server environment. I don't care how much the meal costs.

I only tip on machine pays if I feel I am getting something out of it. Used to do $20 but I was scorned too many times. I am now scorned but save the $20.

I tip for things like haircuts with my regular barber 100%, furniture movers, things where people are really doing something for me some would say excessively.

Very generous of you.

Perhaps you should change your handle to "MaxTip?"

I don't play craps, but it seems to me, it has sort of a team feel to it. A group of people are all rooting for the same things and the shooter plays a big part in that. I wouldn't tip the shooter, but I can see where others might.

Now in blackjack all the players ARE NOT a team, although some players will try to tell you differently. You know some players try to tell you that what the guy at 3rd base does effects everybody. ;)

So there have been occasions when I am at 3rd base and some bigger bettor asks me how I am going to play one of the hands like 16 vs 10 or 12 vs 2 or 3, which are basically 50-50 hands. (basic strategy says hit but you should stand both stand in positive counts). If the higher betting player doesn't like my answer, I will offer to sell him my hand for 150% of my wager. As a card counter there is no time, except after receiving a first card ace (before second card is dealt) that I am playing to a 50% advantage, so I am happy to make that transaction on almost any other hand. :cool:

Even better, I have had people just pay me my original bet to play my hand their way. This is usually at my lower end bets, $25 or $50, they pay me whatever I bet AND I keep my hand. That one is a free roll. Can't beat that!

These kind of transactions are getting into scavenger plays though and generally, I don't like scavenger plays ( I know some AP's do), as I feel they draw attention, which I try to avoid.

If you did you would understand that to lose $50k you'd have to have $50k on the table for a single roll. That's not likely given betting limits for a table that would allow a $10 passline bettor.

Sometimes dealers will show their anger by being rude while I am still playing and I have a surprise for them when I do leave I refuse to color up. Then they do lose control and some pit guy will explain they need the chips and I say I am sorry but no your employee was being extremely rude during my play.

You have no clue how many times the shooters rolls lost him money in the past or how much. One roll or 1000 rolls, it doesn't matter. Think about it, its basically the low rollers expecting charity from the high rollers. Even if most people tipped the roller a percentage of what they win the high roller would always be tipping out much more that he ever receives at certain places.

I have played some craps in the past and I will play if theres something juicy. I have been a side railer watching friends play. I don't know why that even matters, it could be any game. Lets say you are playing blackjack with some guy who always hits when he should stand or stands when he should hit and because of that you make a bunch of money. Should you also tip him?


If some guy comes and rubs your machine or talks to you and as a result you pause and the very next hand you hit a RF, should you also tip him? If not for him, you probably would not have hit that RF.

What if you are playing bubble craps and win a bunch of money off that shooters roll, should you walk over and hand that person money?

Just because a human is starting the RNG prosses by using his hand that doesn't mean they should get tipped. They did nothing tip worthy.

Before TITO the video poker pro's standard tip for a 1K royal was $10 and $20 on a 4K royal.

The Las Vegas culinary workers union once published a stat that 20% of hotel guests leave a tip.

Tipping was always controversial in poker tournaments. When they first started the players agreed those that cashed would tip the dealers. Some people overtipped, some people undertipped, some people didn't tip at all. So they started holding 3% of the prize pool at the WSOP for dealers and floor personnel. Even then dealers still pumped winners to tip.

One story I heard years ago was some california card club payed Johnny Moss to come and play at their card room. They held a big tournament named after him, The Johnny Moss Open. Johnny Moss won the tournament....and stiffed the dealers.

I haven't played craps in years, but my memories of big wins include the look on the shooter's face lighting up as I hand him a black chip or two, especially if the person was a small player. Sometimes money comes and goes but that sort of feeling lingers. That's actually the true definition of karma - not that if you do something good that something good will necessarily come back to you directly, but that if you do good things for people they might be inspired to pass along that positive energy, and then in the scheme of things, it might come back to you eventually.

I've thought about that scenario a lot, that "Ace" and the floor crew just stood by and watched while she stole chips and then later threw them all over the place.

Max pointed out a couple. It's one of those things where its hard to say until you actually see it. I could come up with all kinds of juicy situations that would induce me to play, but its doubtful you will ever see any of those situations. Depending on the situation, I would like to have something with a least a 3% advantage. Of course, if you told me I could sit there and free roll a .5 percent advantage while betting large amounts with a good hourly, I would jump at that chance as well.

Normally you don't find that many Advantage Plays on craps like you would in the past on games like Black Jack.

The first time I played craps was with a stack of $25 match plays, they didn't seem to care if you played 3 or 4 back to back(I have played lots of craps in the past paying match plays) I would leave go do something else and come back the next shift. I just bet the field to get it over in one roll. I did play some craps for mail back during the DI craze and even attempted DI, I quickly realized it was not practical, even if it was possible.

I have went out and played some -EV craps with WOV members like Ahigh. It turned out to be +EV since got some fair mail when I played with him(that was at the SLS). It was free bets, and, or match plays, I don't recall now, but it was certainly a fair +EV craps situation. I meant to go back and see what what would happen if I played bigger, but, I never got round to it since there was better things in there to play with a better return. I have played a fair amount of bubble craps for various AP situations.

There have been a few loss rebates where you could play table games. It's been a while but there was even a 100% unlimited loss rebate you could play on ANY game in the house. Craps was one of the games played. Over all, we did well. I took a bigger piece than others on that particular play. The only way you could lose money is if the casino stiffed you. AAMOF they tried to pull some BS and change the rules after the fact to make things difficult. However, gaming told them to honor the original rules.

I have heard of situations where they were doubling certain hard ways or whatever. I have never found one of those promotions myself. I have a feeling if you will willing to travel outside the united States and search, you might find some good Craps opportunities. I'm no craps expert, and don't care to be. An expert craps player vs someone with a little knowledge are both playing with the same percentages.

I beat them easy a few times, I may have even offered some odds after that. No one wanted to play with me anymore:(. To be fair, they were not there to play me Heads Up pinball all day, they were there to sell their game. I'm sure I would have been AP'ing that game all the time had it hit the casinos. What will the craps action get you in the way of mail/freeplay/matchplay and/or drawings/freerolls/special events.

What is the equity?

The Don't Pass with 3X Odds is .34% house edge. A 100K wager is just a $340 theoretical loss. What is your equity in the mail/freeplay/matchplay/drawings/freerolls/special events?

The El Dorado in Reno used to be a good spot to run craps action because of all the above.

I hope another company will take up the mantle and get a virtual pinball machine on the floor. It did seem like Gamblit Gaming was going to offer a Playboy themed virtual pinball (as part of a suite that would include other skill games as well - all of which to be offered on the same kiosk), but that one seemed to fizzle too.

I've messed around a tiny bit with some of those gamblits skill games where you compete against others, but the vig seem too high, and I didn't see enough ploppies playing to make it worthwhile. I didn't really investigate much further, so perhaps somebody could go around making a living playing those. If that was the case, I think I would have heard about it by now.

The Texas Tea pinball was definitely a nice vulture game because the skill factor limited the number of vultures targeting them. It's really too bad those didn't take off and proliferate, I think I would have acquired a nice pair of machine Hustler shoes and started pounding the pavement since I really enjoyed those.

I think I'm fairly good at pinball for someone who doesn't play all that often, probably once every 3 or 4 years. I played as a kid but probably not much more than the average boy at the time. Of course, then you watch some Pinball Wizard and quickly realized just how good some people are at certain things.

Here's an interesting story. Shortly after those Texas Tee pinball machines first came out, me and Mike we're hanging out at the Venetian, It just before an event or something, I can't remember why we were there.

I told him I want to do a little experimenting and see how they worked since I had never played them before. I think I tossed in $20 or $40 and entered the bonus round quickly. On my very first attempt I made it through all three stages and won the bonus. The bonus wasn't very high, I think it was about 70 bucks. I remember Mike saying, well if it's that easy it probably isn't going to be a very good advantage play. I was kind of thinking the same thing. At the time, I really didn't know much about the machines and how lucrative player funded banking was. I even had a bad experience with one where I got pounded. It wasn't for quite a while after that when I started looking into them again, unfortunately, by then, there were quite a few guys targeting them. I'm not sure why, but the Egyptian pinball version fairly difficult for me to complete all three stages, it took multiple tries each time, until I finally figured it out. To this day, I wouldn't be confident enough to say I could get through all three stages on the first try since I haven't played one in a while.

Since you guys are hanging at the Venetian, I have a question regarding Venetian comp policies. About 15 years ago, I signed up for their club so I could get tracked at the sports book. I had not been a member prior to that. It was a big boxing weekend, and I made a 10K bet on a boxing match as a favor. The bet lost. I never got one postcard or email offer from them afterwards. Nothing at all. Now why would that place not want some white guy with no prior tracked history and a quick 10K loss as a customer? Why wouldn't they send me an offer of some kind?

I checked back another time and they had me on file, so they didn't lose me in the system. And yeah, I know the "white dude" comment is semi-racist, but we're talking an Adelson property here, so there is a rationale to mentioning my race.

The reason I posed the question is that Shackleford worked for the Venetian for a stretch, and since Axelwolf was with him, it was worth asking. I've never encountered a place that blew off a virgin 10K bettor without a track record who was a recent sign-up. I would have expected some serious ads via email and mailer, at the least. Some intro discount offers; maybe a free meal offer on my next trip or something. They never even contacted me.

I don't think I have ever got that many offers related to sports other than Super Bowl Invites, contests and run of the mill promos. I doubt I have ever signed up at a casino for the sole purpose of betting sports, I would have prior slot, VP, or table play, so there would be no way for me to know what offers were related to a sports book. If you lose enough at a few locations in AC a host might contact you and make you a good deposit offer. 15 years ago, I never heard anyone talking about getting anything good at land base casinos based on their sports betting. Did you ever get into betting sports online back in the heyday of online casino bonuses? its was super good in the early 200O's with huge bonuses even for lager deposits. There was a small network of people that passed on information about what casinos were good and what casinos were not so good. Sometimes you might get stiffed, but it was soo good that you could afford to get sniffed and still make a killing.

The money maxed out at about $650. Then it would wrap around. Sometimes you got to collect the max bonus two or three times. This was usually when I would find one way out in the boondocks. Like, White Cloud, Kansas. I've heard of guys finding as much as 15K banked up.

I hope another company will take up the mantle and get a virtual pinball machine on the floor. It did seem like Gamblit Gaming was going to offer a Playboy themed virtual pinball (as part of a suite that would include other skill games as well - all of which to be offered on the same kiosk), but that one seemed to fizzle too.

I've messed around a tiny bit with some of those gamblits skill games where you compete against others, but the vig seem too high, and I didn't see enough ploppies playing to make it worthwhile. I didn't really investigate much further, so perhaps somebody could go around making a living playing those. If that was the case, I think I would have heard about it by now.

It's really too bad those didn't take off and proliferate, I think I would have acquired a nice pair of machine Hustler shoes and started pounding the pavement since I really enjoyed those.

Of course, then you watch some Pinball Wizard and quickly realized just how good some people are at certain things.

I remember Mike saying, well if it's that easy it probably isn't going to be a very good advantage play. I was kind of thinking the same thing. I did encounter it elsewhere, but it was taken off the floor shortly after the encounter (moot of course since I wasn't a fan of the average expense to get to the bonus round). A friend of mine told me that he had the ball go through the flipper, so that wasn't great news either.

If one person goes to a casino to gamble it might end up in a situation where the casino is making 2 to 10 times the money. Just imagine if thousands of people could take action on just one famous person playing in the casino. It would be a game changer for the casinos.

The winner of a jackpot would be the highest score in a game during a certain amount of time, say a half hour: of all the players hooked in to the network there could be graduated payouts for first, second and third place for that one period of play.

This of course would attract serious pin ball players and AP's.

I like it...Unfortunately, there would eventually be 2 things that could/would happen. Only a few of the top players would get all the money most of the time or there would be so many AP/pro's playing that it wouldn't be worth it.


I would love to see some linked progressives or banking type of machines online. I would have someone build me a program to alert me whenever it got to a number I wanted to play it at. The problem is, it would probably only be good for a short period of time. Not to mention, they now have everything they need right there to figure out exactly what you are doing and how much you are making. And now you are back to multi accounting. It wouldn't take long for them to identify someone as an AP and ban their account. You could put cover play in and try to hide it but that only goes so far. But, who knows, theres always some golden opportunity just around the corner.

Mr. V., I would assume by pure pinball you mean pinball machines with a physical playfield (regular pinball machines) instead of a virtual playfield like the Cleopatra and Texas Tea virtual pinball playfields. If this assumption is correct, then a very big challenge would be the standardization of the physical machines. All the machines (say 50 Addams Families or 50 Funhouses or whatever machine is being used in 50 casino locations) would have to be completely uniform - tilts set all the same, leveled exactly the same, and so on. Otherwise people playing easier machines would have the advantage. I suppose virtual machines in all locations would work, with the casinos taking a rake as you describe. I would be down for this if the physics of the virtual machines were very close to reality (i.e the ball doesn't go through a flipper like my friend told me happened to him on Texas Tea/Cleopatra and you could do drop catches, alley passes, dead bounces, nudging, live catches and so on as with a real pinball machine).

All the machines (say 50 Addams Families or 50 Funhouses or whatever machine is being used in 50 casino locations) would have to be completely uniform - tilts set all the same, leveled exactly the same, and so on. Otherwise people playing easier machines would have the advantage. I suppose virtual machines in all locations would work, with the casinos taking a rake as you describe. I would be down for this if the physics of the virtual machines were very close to reality (i.e the ball doesn't go through a flipper like my friend told me happened to him on Texas Tea/Cleopatra and you could do drop catches, alley passes, dead bounces, nudging, live catches and so on as with a real pinball machine).

A banked set of games where when you win you get to play pinball for the bonus amount.

The idea has a lot of issues but it would be cool if actually done and worked. Stadium gaming and a video on the machine displays it somewhere on a larger screen for people currently gambling. It would be exciting for sure..

I was proposing a regular pin ball game, but upon reflection any game where score is kept electronically could work.

I don't play video games so I've no idea what games are popular these days, but if a popular video game has some way of keeping score it should work.

Let me rethink this ...

The key would be to have short sessions, let's say fifteen minutes each, all sessions starting at the same time on all machines no matter their location.

I'd suggest starting on the hour, then quarter after, then half past, etc.

Whoever amasses the highest score, or kill number or whatever it may be during that session wins the top prize / jackpot, then there could also be the option for a second and third prize, depending on the total number of players paying to play that particular session.

The prize fund would be the total amount bet on all machines during that session, less the house rake (e.g.20% rake), leaving 80% to be awarded to the three winners.

Video games are very popular for at home play, and gamers can be rabidly competitive.

Might something like this finally draw them in droves into the casinos?

This is basically what IGT's Texas Tea and Cleopatra slots do. You enter the pinball bonus round when you get two or more of the bonus scatter symbols on the base game. You can then select to enter the pinball skill-based bonus round. There are 3 pinball levels. If you complete levels 1 or 2, you win a banked progressive amount plus the opportunity to play the next higher level. If you complete level 3, then you win a progressive amount and are then finished with the pinball bonus round.

In the case of a regular pinball game, each location would need to have a pinball technician(s) on site to fix the machine(s) if something on the playfield broke or needed to be replaced (just as in standard non-casino based pinball tournaments). All of this is eliminated with a virtual machine(s) of course (but the physics has to be on point as mentioned earlier). Then, along the lines as you describe above, prizes would be awarded less the rake just as in live poker in poker rooms (the pot less the rake).
I don't know if it would draw young people into the casino more - I suspect that in certain locations it might work.

Some years ago I read about poker players making huge prop bets on an Addams Family pinball machine at the Commerce Casino in Commerce, California. If any VCT members have 1st hand experience with this or details of what transpired it would great to hear the stories about it.

Any game where you compete against other players for significant money needs a significant luck factor or some freak will master the game and dominate it.

Yes, airballs. Typically on freshly waxed or new games. I remember hitting a stand up target on Bally Space Invaders (the center standups in the center of that turnstyle) and the ball rebounded and rocketed over the flippers. Another time I got an airball on a machine during a tournament costing me the match and 1st place, LOL. But what I am talking about here is the ball going through the flipper (and not over the flipper) which of course is impossible in a real pinball machine versus a virtual pinball machine trying to emulate real-world physics.

This is a skill game a friend showed me a couple years ago when I passed thru his territory. It's called Nothin' But Net. The skill part is shooting the basketball. You have to press the button that shoots the basketball when the white bar is passing thru the green zone. That green zone can get progressively smaller. But that's the skill end of the game.

You can bet anywhere from 50 cents to $5 per shot. The progressive meters can be exploited. The more you bet the easier it is to hit the meters. So it's a matter of the small bettors driving the meters up then the big bettor coming in and taking the meters off.

You can practice the game at the lower bet level then move up when you get good.

Best I remember the odds of taking the meters off could be calculated from the game rules screen.

Pretty cool Mickey, thanks. Similarly, Space Invaders (which was not a Gameco game - it was from Scientific Games) allowed a $20 payment if the player wanted to go directly to the Space Invaders video game (where you get a shot at the progressives) instead of trying to get it from scatter symbols in the slot base game. The nice thing about these Gameco games as you showed is that there is no slot reels base game component - you are playing hoops right from the get go for example.
