alanbestbuys.com is down, and reaches a parking page

For those of who you don't know, this site was originally alanbestbuys.com, run by Alan Mendelson. In February 2016, Alan split the forum from his main website, and transferred the forum portion to me. The forum was already on my server, but up until February 2016, it was owned by Alan, and he made all administrative decisions. When he was tired of running the forum and was about to take it down, I volunteered to take it off his hands. He asked me to transfer it to a new domain, which I did.

That's how Vegas Casino Talk was born.

alanbestbuys.com, the site originally created to support Alan's infomercial TV show, still persisted. I hadn't checked it in awhile, but I know that Alan's Best Buys was still airing as of semi-recently.

Out of curiosity, I checked the domain today, and noticed that it is simply a parked page, meaning that the site is essentially down. It's possible Alan doesn't even own it anymore.

Perhaps Andrew G could shed some light on this?

Some things are more important. No website=extra hour at craps table

Oh, and despite some "issues" I had with Alan in the past, I have nothing against the guy. I hope he got his problems worked out, and I hope Jason did, as well.

At one time I really liked Alan, and considered him a friend. Those days have passed, but I still hope things are going okay for him. I did not create this thread to needle him. I am simply curious where the site went, given its past strong ties with this forum.

How much to buy it?

It's not for sale, but it kinda looks like the registration lapsed. It says, "alanbestbuys.com coming soon to register.com", implying that it will be available for purchase if not paid for soon.

Registration fees tend to be quite cheap (I pay about $15/year for this site), so I'm not sure why this is happening.

The valuations given for those websites on domain registrars is almost random, just loosely based upon a combo of perceived traffic and perceived value of the words in the domain name. It bears little resemblance to real life.

I could probably sell my Poker Fraud Alert site for decent money at this point, but not for the content. It would be for its longtime association with poker and gambling, and reasonably good google results. Plenty of shady online casinos would fork over money for the opportunity to take it and spam out their offerings.

Seems to me that alan's contributions to these gambling boards have been under-appreciated through the years.

I recall sparring with him on an old usenet board a couple decades ago, IIRC.

Sure, he's had ups and downs in his life but through it all he has continued to contribute his notions, skewed though some may be.

He's also harmless and basically inoffensive, which is a good thing.

Hopefully his infomercials yield enough profit so he can rise above the twenty-five cent VP level so he can once again regale the boards with tales of hitting a high limit hand pay of a hundred grand.

Too bad Singer played him so long and so masterfully, but I suspect alan is a trusting soul whose intentions are basically good.

But I could be wrong, who knows?

I've enjoyed the vast majority of forum interactions I have had with AlanMendelson. I wouldn't swear on a Bible (even as an agnostic), but I'm 99.99% confident we have never spoken outside of the forums in any way.

Alan/AndrewG deserves a lot of credit for the constant punishment, that was doled out to him over the last decade. He took it very well for the most part and continued fighting in the ring. He's in a league with other warriors who kept taking a licking, most notably : EvenBob/ Spike and Tasha/Nathan/Karen etc etc etc. Shout out to all 3 of these noble warriors, who have shown us enormous fortitude !

I met a guy years ago who owned a ton of domain names. At that time certain domains could be worth a lot of dough. I don't think they're worth as much these days. I remember "surfing" the web by domain name. orange.com or baseball.com would have been worth a lot more back in the dark days before google.

That can't be accurate, their is no way PFA is only worth a hundy more then here. Even with traffic decreasing significantly over there the last couple of months and things increasing over here slightly. No chance that jives number wise.

As Dan explained, the site would be valuable to online casinos to use and monetize. Similar to what happened with Elliot’s AP Heat being bought by 888 casino. Guaranteed he got more than it’s listed value.

It is nice to see a low level research employee of a law firm such as you claim to be interested in values of websites. It appears you are looking at other career options to add to your income.

And again, can you explain if you represent Alan, or just work for the firm that he is a client of?

Regarding a casino buying a website... why would a casino purchase any website that had controversial postings including racist, anti Gay, and hate speech?

Casinos need to be squeaky clean. If they wanted a website for marketing they'd build it.

Mr Druff killed his chances of selling his websites to any casino by allowing his free for all. What casino would want a gaming commission to see what's been posted here?

Just because he isn't monetizing it, that is meaningless. Perhaps you don't understand how valuable a gaming affiliate website can be.


Just building a website and marketing may not be enough, it takes time and works for it to mature and gain a reputation. It's an established gambling website that has traffic, and it's known in the poker community, if I recall correctly, it's been mentioned in some major poker publications, etc. and some very well-known poker players know the site and Todd. All that and I'm sure there's much more I haven't even considered is certainly worth 10k and not having to start from scratch For its full potential, it would need some tweaking, you would need Todd to keep doing what he is doing(and perhaps even some extra for a % of the profits) Even without Todd, the right person could turn a nice profit from that website.

They paid over a million dollars for WOV/WOO. It was being monetized but nowhere to its full potential. You dont think PFA is worth a small fraction of that?

My understanding is that the overseas casino purchased Wizard of Odds... Wizard of Vegas just came along in the deal. Wizard of Odds has no controversial content.

But we're talking about a foreign casino company.

I promise you that the Navada Gaming Commission would not allow any licensed casino to be linked to a hate website. Ever.

I also promise you no American casino company would allow itself to have any relationship to the racist and discriminatory comments allowed here.

Offshore Online casinos don’t give a fuck about the Nevada Gaming Commission and no one suggested a licensed US casino would be interested in it.

Axel alone said he would pay 10k for it today, which anyone who knows him doesn’t question. So at a minimum it’s worth that.

And while I’m not accusing you of being Alan, you certainly have that bitterness and anger that he used to show towards others that things worked out better financially than he did. You should learn from the mistakes and faults of clients, not repeat them. Saying you play .25 VP isn’t a good start.

The domain name has nothing to do with the website. Those price quotes are for the domain name only. The actual web site content and ability to purchase is long gone. Wizard sold his website and domain name together
as a package.

Boz and Mr.V basically said what I would have said. I'll add: Mike was An American company that also did the same thing as they are doing, I dont think being a foreign or an American company makes too much of a difference. I think MichaelBluejay is basically doing what Mike did, and there are many other American companies.

Let's not get PFA and VCT Mixed up. It's hard to say what this site is worth. A new owner would probably want to move/hide/removed some of the content if wanted to monetize it I would have paid $2500 for it the time you (I mean Alan)sold it. I would have paid more if I thought Dan would have stayed on and "run" the website. I really didn't know much about this website or anything about Dan at the time, so it's not like I was chomping at the bit, I just had a slight interest and would have figured it out later.

Quahaug, I was never talking about just the domain names. I can't really argue for or against those prices quoted, I can see the domain name VCT being worth more to the right person. If I owned the domain name VCT, there would be no way I would sell it for so little. I'm well aware of the status of WOV/WOO

Thanx for the information. Is there a relatively easy way to restore all that back with their help and permission? I would assume so, but I dont know how most of that stuff works.

I'm not sure what quhaug is trying to say. The domain and hosting can easily be 2 different services. Someone could have stopped paying for the domain yet still have access to the machine it was on. Often people just use the same place, but there are plenty of DNS providers who are not in the hosting business.

Correct, the domain name is registered with a international agency of some sort and there is only one of them. The hosting can be any hosting company like Go Daddy, network solutions, and probably a million others. As far as I know if you give up your website hosting it's gone forever.

The parked domains have been given up by the owner and bought for a buck two fifty by a company that sells the domain for a profit, hopefully. In the meantime they have a page full of ads and links that they also hope to make a buck on.

Yes, but not always.

Sometimes the registrar you used auto-parks you while they wait for you to pay your bill.

It's not clear if alanbestbuys was registered on register.com, or if they just bought it after it lapsed.

And yes, Poker Fraud Alert could sell for decent money for the gambling site marketing power alone. This would be even if I abandoned the site and started a new, competing one, and asked all the users to come with me. As long as the existing site stays up as it is today, it has value because it has search engine credibility.
