The money those things brought in for me over the years was amazing. Years back they added an app so people could play from their phone using a credit card. Which eliminated the need for customers to have cash and encouraged people to spend more buying credits. And customers could play songs anonymously to not be judged on their selections.
One nice feature was the ability to pay extra credits to skip others songs so your selection plays next. At times we would use our free credits given as an operator to play a couple shit songs like Tiny Dancer that killed the mood so naturally others would spend money to bypass the songs to hear better choices.
We also had a kill button behind the bar to cancel any song playing. Used sparingly but at times an inappropriate song, usually a Rap song with explicit lyrics about bitches and ho’s sucking cock, was playing at a time when families were still in the restaurant area of the bar.
They worked on a 50/50 split so there was no expense for the bar and was easy cash weekly.
Fuck it, I'll put in a dollar for The Boz.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65CNtap6bow
I'll tell you why this song means so much to me. For many many years I thought he was saying Hold me closer Tony Danza. Like it was some tribute to late night reruns or some shit. Yep, thats how much it means to me.
For you, Boz.
I talked the owner of the bar next door to where I lived into putting in the internet jukebox. I had already been told they were big money makers compared to the old jukeboxes. The manager of the bar couldn't convince the owner so I cornered the owner one day and told her she was losing money by not doing it. She put it in.
It took in so much money they had to put a second bill acceptor on it.
This was a rough bar and people would get fighting mad if you bumped their music so they instituted a rule against it. Put a sign above the jukebox.
I remember one night some guy played a 47 minute song....then told me about it when it started. It was mostly birds chirping. After about 20 minutes people were starting to look around like WTF? Another 5 minutes everyone was screaming for the bartender to hit the reject button. It was funny as hell.
I vaguely remember counting down the Rolling Stones catalog. I think it was like 500 songs.
Interesting to hear about the way those juke boxes worked on a financial level. Tiny Dancer has to be one of the most overrated songs of all time. Elton has a half dozen or more songs that are elite level and a bunch of other solid tunes. I swear I would hear Tiny Dancer as much, as the other half dozen elite songs combined over the last 40+ years. Overplayed to death.
Those things are great; I just wish they didn't have the, "Be a dick," button. That's the one where someone can go up and pay an extra credit to move their song to the front of the line unless someone has previously done that, then it will just play after other front of the line songs.
On one occasion, someone did that to me even though it had been dead quiet for ten minutes before I played a few. My fiancee and I got our revenge though, I set it up to play Macarena ten times in a row after the other front of the line songs were done and rolled out.
Albums. :D Do you have it on 8 track as well? Would go well with your CB equipment and other electronics from the 80's. Breaker, breaker one nine.
Now we are starting to get into the cause of all the bitterness from some of you guys. Some of you guys are drunks, having wasted half your life in bars, apparently feeding the jukebox. Boz has an excuse...he owned the bar. Mickey has been upfront. But some of the rest of you are closeted drunks and rednecks looking back at your bar days with pride and the rest of your life with regret and bitterness. No wonder you are such unlikeable pricks to everyone except other unlikeable pricks.
Lol you're too much. You whine about bullies and all this and that then you want to insult people who have spent time in bars. I've spent plenty of time in bars. Was the time wasted? No, not really. It would not have been put to anything useful otherwise. Just burnt time, like watching TV or whatever else. You hang out with your friends, drink beer, talk about life. Kewl appears to not have many friends so maybe he just doesn't get it. You'd think though for a guy that cries uncle poor me my profession is at stake - you wouldn't see him insulting all manner of people.
I mean, what have you done with all your time Kewl? Convince everyone you're some never-ending blackjack counter that makes a decent living but nothing special? Give us a break. Shut-up and take a nap.
Now you are showing your ignorance. Albums have made a comeback. There are more albums for sale at Walmart than CD's.

There’s a certain amount of irony that comes from writing multiple paragraphs to call people bitter on response to a one sentence post. You’re being the bitter one Kewlj.
Albums, CDs, 8 tracks? I still use this cassette to 8 track adapter.
https://www.autoweek.com/car-life/di...r-sure-you-do/
I wish I still had my 8 Tracks and Player.
Those were cool.
My favorite was when the tape would get all tangled up.
Good Times.
Hmmm....I have just over 400 vinyl albums, of which we play 1 or 2 daily whenever we're in our AZ. home. And you would get sooo angry if I explained the NEW state of the art turntable/stylus combo we have. Why new....and why are you so lost on this? Because the comeback has passed your incapable generation by. Or---maybe it's just losers like you with no money.
I also have many CD's, some cassettes, a few 8-tracks, and an mp3 player along with the same 1500 songs loaded onto my phone. But vinyl is still my favorite. Sure, digital is clean and CDs are as well. But the thing about vinyl is how you can study your way to get the best stylus and turntable for your record collection, and for us audiophiles we can also get the most appropriate amp/pre-amp/power amp/tuner equipment that we can afford, in order to bring the audio as close to perfection as possible. It's like baking a bread--its a science, not an art.
And you are such a dumbass. :)
Rob, you're an audiophile: do you mind telling me the manufacturer and model of the components in your main system?
I too am an audiophile, so I'll be able to keep up.
Most of the time I just like to listen to NPR, but oftentimes it's boring as fuck, or im in the mood for some music,
so I just blue tooth my phone to the stereo and play songs or news from youtube or whatever. I use a Bluetooth Aux cable jack if no blue tooth is available on the stereo. God forbid I'm not getting any internet service on my phone it's back to the Radio. If there's a Complete loss of any signal, I just say fuck it. I have yet to download a song on my phone and I haven't ever used an iPod.
Adele has a few good songs(I probably couldn't name them if asked) I'm certainly not going to go see her shows/concerts even for free I'm just not into her music.
I do like blasting this song, it's simple but good. I don't even know what the song is about, nor do I care, I just like it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0J2QdDbelmY
When driving I navigate with google maps on my iphone mounted on the dash. I play radio or CD's either classic rock or classic country. I also listen to conservative talk radio.
Spotify or pandora are good for streaming music and podcasts, just use the aux cable. There’s a 50 mile or so stretch in the middle of the drive from Vegas to Reno where zero radio stations whatsoever come in. Don’t believe any cell service or sign of intelligent life either. Fuck that stretch sucks if not prepared. I think that’s where they dump people from Portland.
I’ve done that drive. The first time it was interesting checking out the alien store, looking for bighorn sheep and seeing where the old brothels were. But I agree, it’s a long drive of basically nothing. When counting the miles down to Tonopah to get a beer and some BBQ is exciting, you know it’s bad. Never stopped at the hotel casino at the entrance to Death Valley, doesn’t look like much.
For music and talk I have Sirius/XM in all my vehicles and can’t live without it. When traveling and renting cars, I only select cars that offer it when possible. But I’ve been to a few places like Wyoming, Montana and Alaska where Hertz doesn’t offer it. Not sure if it’s because of reception issues or lack of demand.
Thought I’d post the schedule of a venue near me that often features artists and acts that you might remember and possible figured to be dead.
https://www.rutheckerdhall.com/events
A few upcoming include:
Little Feat
Alice Cooper
Don McLean
Gladys Knight
Ringo Starr
Rita Rudner
Some have history as Vegas headliners at a different time.
Lol. When you put 30-40k a year on a vehicle, and you don’t give a shit about them beyond functionality, it doesn’t make much sense to spend that much on them if you’re going to depreciate them that quickly. I’d rather have two cheaper reliable cars than one for the same price anyway, one for when four wheel drive/off road capability matters and one for when fuel economy matters.
Own a hooptie. Nobody will steal it.
Troll away my man. I’m not even saying it’s better. I’m saying it’s not something I’d want to spend my money on. You’re mocking me for the exact same thing what’s his name I can’t remember that used to talk about the option math bullshit used to mock your boy Mickey for.
I know you're looking to criticize, but I'll answer this because audio has become a big part of my retirement life which has ties to some of my younger years when I had the ability to read about and buy but not the time to fully enjoy.
I've had different system components over the years. My current set-up includes old school and the new stuff. A few items are brand new. The discussion about vinyl piqued my interest in responding. I'd say 97% of my record collection is in pristine condition.
I use (and have found nothing better) 4 original Bose 901 Series I direct/reflecting speakers hung from the ceiling--2 straight ahead and one each to the left and right. All of course face the speakers to the 3 walls.
These are very thirsty speakers, and I power them with dual Bose 1801 metered power amps, run thru a Bose 4401 pre-amp. My tuner is a Nad C-427.
While Bose is the yesteryear heart of my system and while some of this has changed over the years, the pride of it is my Vertere MG-1 MKII turntable and it's Sumiko Starling & Vertere Mystic cartridges. I use the tonearm that came with the turntable. There's several different phono amps and other ancillary equipment.
haha Mickey is my boy now! Anyway, it is a joke and I'm trying to do a Singer impression. My first new car is on order and it HAS bluetooth. My existing car doesn't either and is worth a small fraction of the new car. lol.
This whole conversation made me question whether I want to sell my gas car just because it is dependable and cheap to drive. If I decided to tour the US, I feel I'd be better served with a gas car especially after figuring out the depreciation from high yearly mileage.
No criticism from me: only you know what "sounds good" to your ears.Quote:

I'd not heard of that turntable before; I too have kept my LP's and even my teeny bopper 45's and listen to them.
My 'table is not quite as exotic as yours: it's a Rega Planar 2 with a Sumiko Blue Point cartridge.
I have three high end stereo systems in our home (garage, listening room, bedroom) as well as a dedicated home theater.
Most of my listening is either CD or FM radio.
Mfr's of my equipment includes many well known players such as Krell, Conrad Johnson, Bryston, Aerial ... lots of great high end gear that is made in North America for the most part: I mention that because non-audiophiles probably don't realize how much really great high end gear is still made in the USA / Canada.
Maybe keep both and take the insurance on/off the old when when you’re going on a long ass trip. Unless you’re able to leverage the insane used car prices that are likely to last through much of this year, if you can do that without also having to pay jacked up cost for the new one that’d be solid too.
Insurance rate difference can be kind of a shocker when you go from a 5+ year old car to new or close to as well. Anyway, your money, whatever floats your boat. Chicks who wear makeup and shave their body hair don’t love the older used cars.
If you knew anything about audio you'd know that what sounds perfect to some sounds imperfect to others. And when measured with instruments, sound differences typically are not detectable by the human ear.
I grew up and went to school in Mass. Bose had a fabulous facility on The Mountain in Framingham. That's where I was schooled about audio. And Bose remains the best sound I have ever heard, esp. with the speaker set-up I have.
My 45's remain but many are "scratchy". I put every one of my albums in plastic-lined protectors, so only a few have pops and crackles.
I don't use my system for home video. My 3 main TV's are two 70" and one 75". Each has a high-end sound bar system. These are not nearly as "audiophile" as what's out there in home theaters. But they more than suffice for how we use them.
Yea, pretty much this. Insurance is going up a lot but not to the extent I can't afford it. What good is a car chicks like when you're 60? Young women still sometimes give me a look. Interest rate is about to go up and who knows about inflation. Might as well get the car now. Also - if something weird happens to the oil supply then I'm in far better shape I feel.
Insurance on/off is kinda interesting. I carry minimal insurance. I don't really think I'm collectable as Dan would say. Regardless insurance cost will start becoming signifcant expense. It might be worth turning it on/off. I need to figure out insurance before I pick it up in the next month. Given I'm well into my 40s I don't think buying your first new car is much of a brag ..
I'm too lazy to fuck with my crypto... selling a car to make a thousand or 2 isn't really on the horizon. Just trying to keep my eyes on generating more cash. Want to make a more serious go at APing this year. Hmm wonder what I'd get for this car. Wow I'm seeing at what might realistically be an easy 7-80% markup. Crazy.
Next time I am in Las Vegas I'll be looking for non-gambling adventures, and as I have "mined" most of them I need to come up with something new.
With that in mind I searched the 'net for info on any high end audio stores in Las Vegas and found only ones for home theater.
I find that hard to believe, i.e. that there are no good high end audio stores there: anybody know of any good ones in Sin City?
Not talking Best Buy...
On the Vegas to Reno drive the Jack Dempsey Room at the Mizpah Hotel is worth a stop. Lots of Dempsey pictures. Dempsey started his career fighting bare-knuckled smokers in Tonopah and Goldfield. He was a bar bouncer in Goldfield. Wyatt Earp lived in Tonopah for awhile. Brother Virgil lived in Goldfield for awhile too.
I've driven the round-trip between Phx. & Reno/Tahoe over a hundred times. Love the history of those places, including Mercury, Mina and Luning. But there are also plenty of old mining and ghost towns dotting the deserts and mountains to the east and west along the way. My 2nd book explores a great deal of them.
There's only one sure-fire "speed trap" on the ride and that's thru Tonapah. Guaranteed radar 24/7. I'm as careful as they come yet I got pinched once. I also know the spots on the ride where you can test out your car's top speed if there's no traffic coming for miles and nothing in front of you--which is frequent. I'll never tire of that drive. Best in the USA. But bring a fast car, so you can easily and safely pass any trucks (including triples) and RV's you come across.
Sounds like Searchlight going from Vegas to Laughlin. The biggest speed trap out there. Rented a Vet in Vegas years ago for the trip to Havasu and got to open it up for a stretch south of Vegas before Searchlight. Fasted I ever drove on a highway by far, over 125. I did a Richard Petty Experience at Pocono and that topped at around 145 if I remember correctly.
I’m never going fast in Tonopah because I usually stop at the Tonopah Brewery. Decent beer and BBQ though the last time I was there they seemed to have less of their own beers on tap and more guest taps. Assume they, like many small breweries were hurt by the so called “pandemic” and being in the middle of nowhere didn’t help. Food was still good as always and they had signs up for entertainment. Not much else to do for locals there so they must get a decent crowd on weekend evenings, enough to keep going.
They'll probably do just fine.Quote:

I HATE those kill buttons. If you don't want a song playing it's your job to delete it from the list so it doesn't show up. If I pay good money to hear a song I want to hear my damn song. If you press that kill button you damn well better be refunding me my dollar.
