Zenking have you moved back east or just traveling? Do you still reside in Vegas? Your parents moved? That seems harsh. :rolleyes: After they got you out of the house did they downsize to a retirement community or something?

I was in Pa a couple weeks ago for a blackjack trip with my brother. We did pretty well. The games are still good by rule, but too crowded and too spread out for my liking. I am not into that 45 minute to an hour drive to play one location. My approach would never work there, I would have to come up with something different.

I was hoping you would answer AccountinQuestion's question of "how much"? since you brought it up. And do you measure any winning period vs expectation?

Now, what I think is going on based on these periodic posts/threads by ZK and an occasional conversation with other AP's that know him:

I think Zenking is doing fine. 5-6 years since his move to Vegas? If you look at that time in its totality, and compare his winnings to expectation, I would bet he is pretty close. If I had a criticism, it would be that he doesn't put in enough play. But hey I am a grinder type and it is all about enough play to overcome any kind of negative variance for me. Maybe his approach and goals are different.

I really don't care much for his pure wonging approach. That just guarantees a smaller number of rounds played. I would also think it screams attention, plus would think in crowded locations like Pa it is hard to pull off. But to each his own.

So ZK pops up here every 3-4 months venting about variance. We hear nothing from him for 3-4 months in between, when he is winning. When he is winning $8800, 10k, 12k over a relatively short time (small number of trials) we don't hear a peep from him. But when some negative variance comes along, he vents like no player I have ever seen. :rolleyes: After all this time, he HAS to understand variance and how card counting works with large swings. I don't know why he hasn't gotten a handle on that yet. Maybe he has, but just has this weird need to publicly vent, and keep us amused. :D

Also want to add that while I don't play a max bet of 2 x ???, preferring to play one hand except very select situations, any kind of 2 x $$ max bet is going to result in larger swings in both directions because of co-variance. When you hit those periods that dealer is pulling 20's and 21's out his ass, you are going to lose twice as much and when you have periods that the dealer is breaking a lot, you will win twice as much.

Not really twice as much but significantly more, similar to if you were playing with a single much larger max bet.

In blackjack card counting there is a level 2 count called the Zen Count created or credited to Arnold Snyder. I always like to say "credit to" because who knows how many players came up with and used that same count or technique before the person that published it and gets credit for it. (no offense to Arnold Snyder for this example)

So when Zenking first appeared back on Norm's blackjack forum, I always thought his name was in reference to the Zen count, assuming that he played that count at the time. But I really have no idea.


The one good thing about Zenking's periodic rants and venting about losing periods, is that it highlights the rather significant variance and swings associated with blackjack card counting. There are so many players, both somewhat experienced and especially newer players that just fail to grasp the concept of the variance and swings involved. Part of my sharing my journey is such detail over the years has been to bring this variance of blackjack card counting to the forefront.

Back before computer simulations were so common, there was a loose rule that to be properly bankrolled a player needed 100 times his largest wager or Max Bet. Players underfunded and taking on more risk, might go with 50 times largest wager. With computer simulations we now know the real number to be properly bankrolled is more than 100 times. But just think about that. This kind of bankroll is needed because these kinds of swings and variance are rather commonplace in card counting.

Again, I think this is one of the least understood areas among card counters, especially the newer players. You Have to understand the math and that means the variance involved with card counting if you intend to play seriously.

I would be willing to bet that just regular, normal variance has ended more card counters play than anything, either by wiping out their small under funded BR all together or just a negative run that they are ill prepared to handle mentally, and they quit saying something about how card counting doesn't work.

Anyway, that is why despite all his issue and his name-calling of people, even players that tried to help him at times, I still feel like Zenking's periodic posts are useful to some players....whatever card counters may be left. :confused:

I just don't see these numbers as earth-shattering extreme as you do. Losing 13k over 26 hours. That is an average of $500 an hour or ONE of your $500 Max Bet of 2 x $250, per hour. Yes that is a negative run, but not to the extreme you are making it out to be. Playing for 5-6 years since your move to Vegas at this level and several years prior, I would have thought you would have experienced a run of this magnitude half dozen to a dozen times by now. I know a string of name calling is coming but let me ask you this: What happens when you go on a positive run for 10, 12, 15, even 20k over a relatively short period of time? I don't see you on here going out of your mind. And that is exactly what card counting is, a series of runs in each direction. Very rarely is it just a nice steady climb.

I don't know what you have as a bankroll these days. It used to be 50k and that is about right for the max bet you are playing. So you have lost 25% of your bankroll. That happens....I am not going to say fairly regularly, but it happens. That is why a player needs that large BR, in your case 50k or more, preferably more. Because you will lose, 25%, 33%, 40% at some point.

And if a player freaks out when losing 25% of that BR necessary to play those particular stakes, then he isn't really playing to that larger BR that is necessary.

And this other shit, flat tires, and losing girlfriends or girlfriends mad at you or whatever has nothing to do with the math, variance and swings that are blackjack card counting, unless you are losing it and playing on tilt because a few things in life went bad that day, in which case, you simply are not cut out to be a professional player.

In all honesty, when I look at the records posted, I see a couple bad weeks. Maybe go as far as to say very bad weeks.

I can't help but wonder if you check back through your records for 5-6 years now, have you never experienced a period that rivals this? It seems like you have because you have been on here venting many times

My point is you should understand by now that these kind of runs occur with blackjack card counting. They just do! And after you experience a few and bounce back you should be able to handle them better than you now are

I don't care if you want/need to occasionally vent. I know everyone finds it amusing and I hope you are getting what you want out of it.

My only real concern is that these periods of thinking everyone, including God, is against you is effecting tour play and contributing to even more losses. You did mention some mistakes made.

Get it together fella. You have succeeded at this for 5-6 years, maybe more. Put that experience to work.

I have never been a fan of taking a break to get your head on straight. I am a grinder and try to power through negative runs. But sometimes you have to just take a break for a couple days. Admittedly, that is probably difficult on a trip, staying with friends. You didn't make that trip to sit around for a few days, but if you need to...do it.

Gambling-wise, I would have paid to have watched ZenKing in my shoes when:

1) I had the Houston Oilers at 35-1 and 40-1 to win the SB. I was sitting in the GN with some Asian high rollers during the playoffs when I got up five minutes into the third quarter and went to my room because I could smell what was coming. 2) I won the final week of a phone-in handicapping competition against thousands of people to earn a slot as a season-long handicapper in The National (1990). Twelve "civilians" had each won a week. The winning consisted of a job handicapping and writing about football, then at the end of the first season, they would choose one to be a permanent full-time writer under Mike Lee in the only national sports daily in the U.S. Basically, you became a famous dude. For my contribution during the first season of 12 people, I had a modest contract (5K) to do a column each week. I was the only writer and actual handicapper and person with journalism experience among the twelve, so I figured I was 50/50 to wind up as The Guy. Well, The National lasted from January to July, folded a month before the pre-season started. They reneged on my little contract, and no famous-ness. I would have paid to watch ZenKing deal with that. I suspect a guy named Cy Cerro, who handled my contract, would have been kidnapped and buried alive.

I don't play or watch poker. I don't know what to make of Phil Hellmuth. I feel like he is a TV "character" now, playing a role of the bad boy as much as anything.

Now Zenking, well a blackjack AP (I would think any AP really) but a blackjack AP HAS to be able to keep his emotions in check. I don't think a player can be a successful player if you can't and that is what concerns me about ZK. Degen gambler types and ploppies, start chasing losses, and making mistakes which only adds fuel to the fire of a losing session. You can easily turn what should be a small loss into a mammoth loss.

With blackjack card counting specifically things like overbetting, throwing out bigger or max bets before the count and advantage calls for it. Maybe making a double down "early" before the count calls for it. The player starts thinking I am not going to win my $5000, or $8800, or $10,000 back by betting $25 or $50, so he starts doing everything wrong, early (before the advantage) or excessive. Again, this is my concern with Zenking at the moment. I hope he has been playing long enough with the experience that this venting is only an online forum type thing and not rolls over to the tables.

I am so unemotional and completely detach from the money that I have had to train myself to actually show a little emotion. It used to be, I would lose $5000, or $8000, and upon losing that last round and exiting, I would say "thank you", as I frequently say after any session. I started thinking that is NOT how a non-Ap would act, which is what we want to emulate. So now I pretend to be a little upset, saying something like "I never win at this place anymore" or something along those lines. I have no idea if that does anything, but it just feel more like what a non AP would do or say.

And as far as losing itself, I handle it or don't handle it well, in a different manner than ZK. On long losing periods, I am talking weeks, sometimes months of negative or flat results, I become very unmotivated to play. I really have to push myself to keep playing every day. Focusing on the EV generated, helps with that for me. Win or lose for that day or that week, every round I play generates EV and in the long run end of year, results and expectation always come back in line. THAT is my secret to keep motivating myself to play when I haven't won for several weeks. :rolleyes:

Oh and as far as ZK's comments about shooting up the strip made at WoV, which lead to his banning there, I don't know what to make of that, nor will defend it in any way. THAT was a stupid thing to do or say and wasn't it just after the Oct 1 Las Vegas mass shooting? I think that put Shackleford in a position that he had to not only ban Zk from the forum but needed to inform authorities that such a comment was made of his forum. I don't know whether he did or not, but I would be willing to bet someone on that forum alerted authorities.

I mean forget about the terrorist part of it, just as a card counter AP, what if Shackleford or some member of WoV that knows ZK's name (and there are many), was concerned enough that they contacted authorities and authorities passed that info along to casinos? You now have a situation where the player has basically databased himself. Even if the casinos take no action, there is the possibility they are keeping an extra close eye on this person. That is a stupid thing for a card counter AP to do.

As for the subject of losing while gambling, one thing AP's and disciplined non-AP's need is TOLERANCE to absorb, accept, and work through losses.

Heck, we're not all douchedawgs or Evenbobs who win almost all the time: we're REAL gamblin' men.

Seems to me it takes two things, primarily: first, adequate bankroll: never play scared, and second, the ability to "let things go," to not get too overwrought when the sword of Damocles descends upon you.
