Obnoxious. They don't want you recording the show, so they make you put your phone in a "Yondr" case they provided, which you physically hold, but makes your phone unusable and inaccessible while in the theater.

This is dumb because a recording of a live concert is simply not the same as being there. It's the same reason you wouldn't want to watch someone's cell phone recording of a baseball game from the stands, even if you could watch it live. The entire reason to go is to be part of the entire experience, and to hear the performer live in front of you. Otherwise, you might as well just listen to the (better quality) music which was already recorded for commercial sale/airplay.

Their excuse is probably that people are causing disturbances with their phones, such as taking flash photography, receiving phone calls, and hurting people's eyes with bright screens. But that's bullshit. These are minor inconveniences, and they can advise everyone to keep their brightness down and ringers off, and not to use flash photography, and even provide a number to text to report anyone not listening. Or they could just ignore it and realize that not everyone around you at a live concert will be pleasant, and that's the way it goes.

But this is complete bullshit. What if you're expecting and important text? What if you want to check on your kids back in the room every so often? You have to leave the concert and go to a designated space to even look at your phone?

Get the fuck outta here.

By the way, in the 2000s, they did not allow any kind of phone usage at the table at the WSOP. They eventually realized that smartphones were a part of life, and put an end to that rule. Now the only rule is that you can't touch it while you play in a hand, and that you can't talk on the phone unless you step away from the table.

This rule is very regressive.

I find this a stupid idea too. Like Dan says, what happens if there's a severe emergency like your kids get attacked at gunpoint while at home and you're in the Concert and wouldn't know what was going on due to your phone being unusable? I saw on the news a couple went out for an evening and used their phone to check in on the kids and were terrified to see burglars were inside pointing guns at their children! The Burglars pulled one of the children into a bedroom by her hair and forced her to give them a safe. The Parents were able to communicate with the burglars using the phone to tell them they were caught on camera and needed to leave their children alone and leave. The burglars left. What would have happened if the Parents were at a Garth Brooks Concert with no usable phone? Stupid idea.

How else could your child tell you they were in dire trouble without a cellphone? I remember a news report about a drunk bus driver driving children! A Child called her Dad and said something like,"Our bus driver is driving like a crazy person and she's scaring me," which is how the Dad immediately knew his child was in danger. In say 1990, there's NO way her Dad would have immediately known his Daughter was in danger. Luckily the children all survived and the bus driver lost her license and her job and was arrested.

I respect my wife's decision.
I told her that if it was me, I wouldn't take it and I'm not taking it until they test it properly.

Reminds me of when people chide me for buying the internet when I go on a cruise. People say to me, "Todd, why are you on the internet on a cruise? Why don't you get off the computer and just enjoy life?"

And I respond that I do exactly that during the cruise, such as when I'm visiting a port during the day, or involving myself in an onboard activity. But there's also downtime when I'm happy to be in my room, sitting on my balcony, and connecting to the internet on my laptop.

This phone policy would seriously take away my desire to go to a concert with such a policy, and I'm a guy who barely touches his phone while at concerts.

I also pointed out we NEED smartphones. We didn't need them before they existed simply because they hadn't been made yet. But now that they exist, we NEED them. We got along fine without them in my day, and it made people motivated to think their way through situations rather than depend on instant communication. Has it reduced crime, hate, or has it enhanced the lives of people in general? I'm wholly in favor of making people choose between sitting comfortably and respectfully paying attention to a concert/event YOU chose to attend....or staying away just so you could use your pathetic, sorry-ass little gadget EVEN MORE....or feel "important" because you're on standby.

People say these "wonderful little devices" have driven living and working "to new heights" with their fancy collection of instant gratification etc. But many times that works against us, as there are tons of things that might have been better to wait for to learn.

Look at this world today--has all this instant communication and capability to look up answers on the internet while having lunch or going to a game, really made this messed-up world any better? Has it reduced crime, hate, or has it enhanced the lives of people in general? Has it helped create a caring crop of politicians who use this tool to truly help them do the right things for their constituents?

Why are only Duff and I pointing out that we NEED Smartphones? Smartphones are a necessity. People have had their lives SAVED because of them. For example, an abused woman who along with her Children were being held at knifepoint by her Abusive Boyfriend. She used her SMARTPHONE to notify either a Pizza Hut or a Domino's that her Abusive boyfriend held her and her children hostage at knifepoint. The pizza chain has a loophole that allows victims to ask for Police covertly. The victim , who was allowed to use her phone to order pizza for the family, used her SMARTPHONE to order a pizza saying something like,"Green peppers, sausage, mushroom, cheese," and in the "special request," she put,"Please call police. Me and my children are being held at knifepoint by my Abusive boyfriend." The pizza place alerted Police. Police came and arrested the Abusive boyfriend. There's no way she could have made that special"pizza ," request without a SMARTPHONE.

Keep it turned off until you need it. I used to carry one around for emergencies only, ie, without ever hooking it up. Only problem is that they keep increasing the G's.

It might be right for women with children that have homicidal boyfriends to have a Smart Phone, but for the those of us who are not in that situation and who don't want to be enslaved by a small device, the best move is to not have one.

I'm basically in the same spot (flip phone). My friend gave me a blank smart phone with no service, but I only have used it as a glorified digital camera a few times.

No fun to attend when the performer looks like an ant. Why not just watch him on TV?

I feel the same about attending sporting events. If the seats aren't good, I don't bother, even if they're free.

Yeah, I’ve been to a couple of shows recently that used Yondr pouches, and honestly, it felt a bit over the top. I get why they’re doing it—people filming entire songs or checking their phones every five seconds *can* be annoying—but locking everyone's phones away like that just punishes everyone for the actions of a few.

At one show, I had to leave the venue mid-set to check on a family situation, which was frustrating. I think a better approach would be just enforcing no-flash and being stricter with staff on spotting actual disturbances instead of going full lockdown.One of the bigger shows I went to recently didn’t use Yondr at all, and it was still a great experience — people were respectful for the most part. If you’re planning to see something big and want to know ahead of time, checking events like [spam URL redacted] usually gives info on phone policies so you can plan around it.

Maybe I would go there and have a really good time not looking at my phone. All those people are trashy in the collective. Our entire lives used to be this way.
