I find that BOTH disturbing AND hard to believe.
Circa 1980, I was in the Castaways and saw an attractive woman come in, all disheveled, one shoe on, nylons torn. She went to one of the pay phones in the lobby and called her boss. She had been at the Sands, across the street, and the story she told her boss was that she had been in the walkway near some shops, and security came upon her and demanded ID. From the conversation, she evidently was a reporter for ABC (familiar?), and when asked for ID, she took it that they thought she was a hooker, so she told security to "fuck off," as she told her boss. Well, two guys dragged her to the front door and bodily threw her out onto the sidewalk. She seemed more upset that they had knocked the heel off her new pair of shoes than the fact they had roughed her up.
The theory, I suppose, is that if you are asked for ID and do not provide it, stuff can happen, at least circa 1980.
