Thread: HD TV news

Now that it's been around for awhile and commonplace, do any of you think some stations over-hype HD news? To me, HD news is not all that big a deal and for most news stories (talking heads and the like) it's just window dressing. I know one station that's the first in its market to have it and you'd think the way they're promoting it that it's the second coming of Christ.

Just wanted to see what the rest of you thought.

Television would over hype something? Unfortunately, you're right. Television news will be wowing about HD long after the rest of the world is yawning over it.

    HYPE THRILLS - THEN KILLS

Does it ever really enhance the JOURNALISTIC QUALITY of the content other than visual appeal? Or is it just a means of keeping pace with technology, are B/W kinescopes stll broadcast? Hopefully, the audience will ultimately tire of the glitz and hype, and seek journalistic substance over style. Good luck. Technology once served to advance true journalism, now it provides only distraction and detraction. While there is certainly a case to be made for the death of true journalism, it was certainly not caused by technology, but by greed. It is also highly unlikely that technological advancements will ever serve to resurrect true journalism for credible mass consumption. "Citizen Journalists" armed with iPhones posting on Youtube? Please. To paraphrase, the hope lies not within our hype, but within ourselves.

The production house we use now for closed captioning is already planning for 3-D commercials and doesn't that mean that 3-D news coverage is coming? We already have 3-D network sports. Drop the price of cameras a bit more and it will be here. Will that make viewers tune in? Yes, until everybody else has it. And really, with the way technology is advancing in five years everyone will have it.
