Thread: Has Anyone Else Done This?

Now that the football games are just about over except for the Packers--who don't interest me, I've been meaning to ask this question of the vp players among us. Earlier today I mentioned how last night was a very good nite for me, meaning I did great on a few vp machines, especially considering I haven't played more than 30 minutes since relocating to N. Nevada.

I went to Casino Fandango with Cindy last night after spending much of the day with friends over in Reno. I didn't play all day and decided to listen to the band there and have a drink at the bar with my wife inside Fandango since it's not far from our RV park. If you haven't been inside this casino, it sort of reminds me of the festive atmosphere at the Peppermill on a busy weekend night.

So I stuck in three hundies and played the old standby: BP, which is 7/5 on $1, $2, $5 & $10, but only 6/5 on quarters & 50c on this six-level beauty. Not playing any particular strategy, I played a few hands on 25c, some on $50c, some more on dollars, and because I wasn't doing so well, I played a couple of hands on $2 hoping for a FH or something better that would put me up whatever and I'd go back to quarters. There were no plans to play any higher since I only had about $600 on me.

After only about ten minutes of sitting there and on the $2 game, here comes my third-ever dealt royal--all of which have been in hearts. And you know what? I almost felt guilty getting this one with so little effort, and on a machine that the so-called "experts" say I will lose on and on a machine they claim they would never play. So look what they missed out on THIS time! We left 25 minutes later because that's how long it took them to pay me in cash. Profit for the short visit--$7880 minus two bucks for the bartender's tip.

The night was ALMOST over, but not quite. Down the street was a fairly new small casino I'd never been to, so I wanted to go in for a few waters this time and to get a players card/check out the place. It's nothing special and I even bought two waters after signing up for their card. Then we recognized a couple from the RV two spots away from ours, and sat down to chat. Turns out these folks have never played vp, so I sat down at a 25c/50c/$1 machine just to give them an idea. But the "lesson" soon became boring as all I was doing is losing hundred after hundred, and they went home.

We didn't, because while I was playing Cindy was deep into her Kindle so staying another 30 minutes was neither here nor there. BTW, this dollar game was 8/5 BP. Down about $600 on a very frustrating machine, it then proceeded to deal me a pair of tens three hands in a row, and holding them rendered no improvement on the draw. The next hand was a RAZGU, but it included a 10 high. I thought for a moment, then held it out of irritation. The royal filled in on the draw. Sweet revenge. That's when we left.

Now that is good luck... but none of them was a special play, was it Rob?

I have had two dealt royals in my life. One was on a 5-cent 50-play machine. The other was on a progressive at Rincon that paid $36K. Dealt royals happen, just like hitting jackpots on slot machines.

I wish you had photos, as they are always nice to see with the "hold" on top of all five cards.

Congrats Rob! Have never had a dealt Royal before but would be a thrill. Continue good luck to you rest of year and on to the next.

YES! Well, almost as good. After reading the post on the one million hand test-the one that included ANY 1-2 card hold to the Royal, I started holding on the ten on the Razgus and hit 4 8's for a shocking quad. And as for the first Royal and just experimenting around with the progressions-I think that's what I understood of one of your articles, "What's wrong with a positive progression?" Man, that is great! You just don't know how much I study your articles and come up with MY OWN WAY of playing and I know what you mean when you say you play the way you "feel" sometimes.

Alan, holding the 10 wasn't a special play, it was done out of annoyance from getting nothing out of the three hands with pairs of tens just prior. I'm glad I did it, but it would have never happened when I played as a disciplined professional because holding just a 10 is not the optimal hold either. This was just as unexpected as those four aces you got on the draw after holding a high face card. Just dumb luck--the kind of luck every recreational players likes! The dealt royal was a combination of my math prowess and skill as a former advantage player.

I didn't have my smartphone with me - only the old flip that I use to talk on. I don't know how to put a picture on here--how to do it please for my next series of big wins?

Still, I'll always do it from now on on Razgu's.

This might surprise you, but a lot of players hold only a "ten" and have reported drawing a royal. My wife's sister did this during a recent stay at Caesars. I think royals drawn this way have been reported on LVA. There might even have been a discussion about it. It's not farfetched either. You have the same odds of drawing a royal holding a single "ten" as you do holding a single "Jack" or a single "Ace." I drew a royal playing Triple Double Bonus holding only a single Jack. My wife drew a Royal several times holding just a single Ace.

    Now about this, Rob:

You're kidding us, right? You're being sarcastic, right? It's your video poker joke of the week, right?

I had a similar situation with a dealt Q,J, 7 of spades and a K, and some other low card. Normally I would have held the lone K, since it was unsuited and the Q, J had a 7 for a "penalty card". But since they were suited and two-to-the-Royal, I held the QJ and consequently hit the Royal.

Math guys--wasn't the 2 suited hi cards the better play even with the penalty card?? Numbers please.

Unless the game was any game that pays 7 for a flush.

I too have had several royals by drawing four cards, but never when holding a lone ten. I did read somewhere else, probably LVA, where it was done before, and the player got chastised by Dancer saying how much that dumb play "cost" him. In other words, buy his stuff, keep him liquid so he can keep playing higher limits thru his retirement years, and learn how not to win.

A suited QJ is much better than single king. Yes, I've hit RFs holding 2 cards many times.

I've also had 2 RFs holding just the 10 of diamonds. Before anyone gets all bent out of shape, that is a correct play quite often in OEJs. I've also had a couple of out one card holds for royals. The K of hearts hit a progressive playing DB in Detroit about 10 years ago and holding just the J spades hit a royal playing a BP progressive in Reno in the late 90s.

In most games dealt suited QJ7 the correct play is to hold the QJ alone. It certainly is that way playing Bonus. Now if the cards were a suited QJ9 then you might hold all three depending on the game.

I've never held a ten-high by itself, and never missed a royal had I held just the lone ten, but if you are chasing royals then why not hold the lone ten? As I said my wife's sister hit a royal holding just a ten.

In games like 10/7 DB and 9/7 TDBP the correct play is to hold the three flush cards. It's been a long, long time since I've played either game however.

I think holding just a 10 and filling in a royal is the most satisfying hand I've played since tossing 3 Q's to hold 3-to-the-royal and hitting it.
