This coming Saturday, January 26, is the first of the monthly drawings that will award a total of $100,000 of free play and cash including the $50,000 of cash at 11-PM at Harrah's Rincon Casino in San Diego.
I read the fine print of the rules and anyone interested in being there for these drawings (you must be present to win your prize) should carefully pay attention to the rules.
1. You must swipe your Total Rewards card at one of the entry kiosks during the day on January 26 once between 6am and 10:30pm in order to make your card number eligible for the drawings. In other words, you might have played at Rincon every day during the month of January and you might have a ton of entries -- but if you didn't swipe your card on "drawing day" all of that play doesn't count.
2. Every hour from 1-PM till 10-PM five awards of $1,000 will be made. You do not have to be there at the time of these drawings to claim your prize. You have until 11:59-PM to claim your prize. This is an interesting situation. Let's say you did play a lot during the month of January -- at least 15 minutes before the first drawing at 1-PM you need to have your card swiped but you do not need to be there. In fact, you don't have to show up at the casino again that day until just before the 11-PM drawing for the $50,000 big cash prize.
3. The $50,000 drawing rules are a bit different. The winner of the 11-PM drawing for $50K will have ten minutes to claim the prize. If there is no claim in ten minutes, another winner will be selected. I suppose if the second person drawn doesn't claim the prize a third person will be selected, and so on.
4. If you don't swipe your card by 12:45-PM on Saturday for the first hourly drawing, then swipe your card as soon as you can after that to be entered in subsequent drawings that day. If your card isn't swiped by 10:30-PM for the 11-PM $50,000 drawing you are out of luck.
So what strategy should you use? Well if you had played during the month, then clearly it is in your best interest to swipe your card before 12:45-PM on Saturday to be entered for all drawings. Get your card swiped and then go home if you like but return before the 11-PM drawing for the Grand Prize. And when you show up for the Grand prize drawing, check to see if you were picked for any of the $1,000 drawings because then you will have until 11:59-PM (just before midnight) to claim the $1,000 prize or prizes that you won.
For those of us who are "day trippers" to Rincon, this means we would have to drive down there early Saturday to have our cards swiped to be activated, and then we would have to return before 11-PM for the big drawing.
Of course those staying at Rincon or those who live nearby have less traveling to do than someone like me who has about a two hour "commute" each way to and from Rincon from the LA area.
But this is also what will separate the "advantage players" from the rest of the crowd. If you can be sure to get your card swiped early, you increase your chances to win money.
