Thread: Invest in Gold

  1. #21
I am sorry I asked. I have a position in both GLD and GDX. I was hoping you were going to tell me that gold was going back up to $1800 per ounce. I have had these positions as well as some shares in SLW for a number of years. I guess it is too much to ask for my metal stocks to go up at the same time the rest of my portfolio is at an all time high. Absent any major world geopolitical event, there does not appear to be a catalyst that would move gold or silver much upwards from here. If gold breaks below $1000 I will probably add to my position.

I noticed that coal is making a move. My BTU is finally back over $20 a share. I hope it stays there and continues to go up. Even though our current administration is averse to coal, they should at least allow these companies to sell coal to the rest of the world. What are your thoughts on coal?

I know nothing about coal except that I often get a lump of it for the holidays.

Other than gold, what area of the stock market do you actively invest in Alan?

  4. #24
I don't pick stocks. I believe in broad based mutual funds.

I am surprised you do not enjoy picking stocks. To me in many ways it is like playing Video Poker. The last four and a half years in the stock market have been great. It has been like going to the casino when they raise the payback percentages from 97% up to 100%. I am sure there are some people who have lost money in this time but it would be hard to do b/c most sectors keep going upwards. Lately my gold / silver positions and utility stocks have been taking a beating. I think a 5 to 10% correction in both the s&p and the dow is inevitable so I have been taking profits. If gold and utilities go much lower I am considering adding to these positions.

Let me add that the longer it takes to get the 5 to 10% pullback, the larger the correction is likely to be.
