At the race track, if you bet with your player's card, your number is printed on the ticket or voucher and so if someone finds it and turns it in, management will look up the number and come find you. Also, if someone else finds it and uses it, if that person puts his player card in, they can trace it to that player and will bring security in to attempt to make him give it back.
