Thread: Did the WSOP lower the cost of the tournaments this year?

I was looking over the schedule of this year's WSOP tournaments, and it appears there are more $1,000 tourneys in the 2013 schedule. See it here:

Did the WSOP cut prices this year? Yet, I've read they are having more tables.

That makes sense. They need to boost the brand and be able to claim more players than ever. Caesars' is next in line (after the Fertittas) to get online poker in Nevada ready to roll. I would assume they'd try to maximize numbers at the WSOP. Most of the 1K tournaments, other than rebuys, are considered unskilled shoot-'em-up turbos by the pros, but these tournaments will draw the crowds.

I saw an ad last nite on TV that a site called UltimatePoker.com is a legal real money betting site in Nevada for poker players, and it mentioned something about tournaments and the WSOP. Is this only available to Nevadans, or anyone in the US?

That's an INTRAstate network. Nevada was first. New Jersey is close to having it and about a dozen other states have these intrastate networks in the works. They are legal under federal law.

So you mean right now only Nevadans can perticipate, and soon after NJ etc. on their own sites?

Exactly Rob. The intra-state networks are only for players within the state. Of course there are rumblings that the states on their own might be able to join up with other states to create multi state networks to skirt by the federal restrictions.

Several of the big casino companies already have gaming approval for intra state online poker in several states. But as you might suspect, they aren't doing this for Nevadans... they are doing this hoping to have a foothold for something bigger such as multi state agreements or true nationwide online poker and then online casinos.

You can sign up out of state, but currently can only play in state. Caesars' is next in line in Nevada after UltimateBet, and will undoubtedly use this year's WSOP to garner email and mailing lists. I was really surprised the Fertittas went with UltimateBet as their moniker, given the UltimateBet fiasco with cheating a few years back.

UltimateBet has a big, well established brand with a long list of former members. People will quickly forget about the scandal... if they haven't already.

Nobody who has played online poker in the last 10 years will forget the Ultimate Bet scandal. Online poker players discovered the scandal themselves, and it was an ongoing story for years. The poker community was responsible for pulling back the curtain, so the information is embedded in every forum. The company basically went on hiatus and ceased to exist. That's why I'm surprised the name was adopted for the new enterprise.

redietz... people "forget" and brands live on. When I grew up in New York in the 1950s and 1960s no Jewish family would own a Mercedes or BMW because of the connection to the Nazis. But go to a synagogue now during the High Holy Days and look at the cars in the parking lot: Mercedes and BMWs galore.
