Thread: Casino Markers and Strategy for Players, Casinos

    Interesting article: http://www.cigaraficionado.com/webfe...w/id/17046/p/1

But if you are really not interested in "markers" and the enforcement, skip to the third page, and the next to the last paragraph about "win goals" and discipline which is a more popular subject here.

And there you have a very good reason why strong but rare discipline combined with my having used a comparitively large bankroll to win a pre-determined relatively "small" amount of profit, was so successful over time....and mostly on "negative" games. Positive or negative, each experience is an unrelated, individual event, never affected or able to affect either past sessions or those that are yet to come.

It is all so simple, people.

We do a fairly substantial amount of bankruptcies, and most of them have markers with numerous casinos. Of course, we also have done a lot of BKs for dealers and pit bosses who you would think would know better. I have played with markers for 30 years as I just don't like carrying that kind of $$$.

I can't imagine carrying large amounts of cash. I rarely will arrive in Las Vegas or at any casino with more than $200 in my pocket... usually less than $100, and sometimes as little as $40. And if I win something big I take a check and not cash.

When I was going to Vegas 6-7 times a year I also kept a bank account there and I would fund the account a few weeks ahead so I always had $$$ available instead of carrying it there.

Good idea but I am glad I didn't do that. When I was going through divorce #2, the "Hollywood Divorce Lawyer" that my ex went to decided to do a "discovery" for hidden assets and subpoenaed every Bank and Casino in Nevada looking for hidden money. They gave me a bill of $20,000 for it. I told the judge that there were no secret accounts and I would not pay the bill. But if they found just one account I would pay it. There was no secret account to find. They got stuck for the money.

Never had a marker account and never will. Cash is king, and I've driven to & from and all over Nv. hundreds of times with five figures in my bag. Why worry? Have you got a sign on you that says "Hey....I'm carrying $28,000 in cash folks!" Markers, OTOH, are a casino tool, and you know how I feel about them. Worried about going to your car? Don't be a cheapskate--use valet everywhere.

That's begging for trouble Rob. Last year I had won big at casino during the day and then went to hockey game after and had no time to unload the cash. After the game, I was walking 3 blocks just outside of downtown chicago and got surrounded by what they call "flash mobs" here. A flash mob is groups of black teenagers (and young adults) who beat and rob you in broad daylight. Of course, this was 11 at night. There were 3 of them and I was stupid enough to fight them rather than give them about $15,000. I kicked out the first guy's knee; the second one ran. Then I just bull rushed the third guy (who was huge)about 30 feet into a wall. Then I went to my car and grabbed my bat. But i went to wipe sweat from my brow and it was blood. The big guy must have had a knife and I cut myself when i bull rushed him and could have easily lost an eye. So I didnt go back and finish the job with the bat.

But the reality is my chance of getting out of that was next to nil. It was worse than one of your special plays-lol.

Very unusual regnis, but that's a different world than I would have been in while carrying lots of money. Chicago's even worse now. I ONLY would carry big amounts of cash--and feel very safe in doing so--in a gambling environment. Casinos are very safe, their hotels & restaurants are very safe, and valet parking holds it all together. And what's safer than driving alone with a gun in the car?

I have always parked there because for the 3 or 4 block walk, I can park for free on the street instead of $40 in a lot. If a bunch of us meet for a game, we all park downtown and take 1 car to the game. They all park in a lot--I park and walk to save the 40 but also to avoid all the traffic and I just like to walk. Three blocks from a busy downtown but just far enough that it gets a little seedy. I have still parked there since the incident--no one said I was smart.

I agree with you on a casino--never felt insecure with $$ in a casino other then all the deadbeats I have loaned $$ to.

I actually tend to agree with Rob on this one. Casinos themselves are pretty safe, and I assume Rob isn't carrying cash in something that can be pickpocketed. I saw some disturbing things in downtown LV last week. First, there are half a dozen shops selling packaged liquor. Second, a handful of places have ATMs right at their entrances, basically in full view. Anybody, even standing across the street, could evaluate the robbery-worthiness of people using the ATMs, and could then follow them as long as necessary. These two developments can't do crime rates any favors.

I also agree that unless you are foolish, having cash in the casinos is safe. The risk is traveling to and from the casino. In Rob's case, why would you want to have a lot of cash in your pocket during your car ride from Phoenix to Vegas? Would you want to carry a bundle of cash going through security at any airport? My feeling is the less "cash" the lower the risk you have for any kind of trouble... anywhere.

There are some real shades of irony in saying your cash is safe in a casino!

I can see the logic in playing high denom BJ for only a few credits. While it doesn't change the ER over time it can influence the casino theo and thus generate higher comps. The value of these comps could make it a positive play. However, any more play on a negative game like BJ would negate the advantage.

Ummm... I think blackjack is one of the few positive expectation games in a casino, when you know what you're doing.

Maybe 20 years ago, Alan, but with today's rules and deck shenanigans, positive EV blackjack is a tough find.

I used to think lugging large amounts of cash through airports might be a problem, but in reality I have never been flagged for large amounts of cash. I have been flagged several times for buying a last-second ticket, however.

Would you say the same for video poker?

Getting back to the cash: any day you escape or avoid trouble while carrying large amounts of cash you can thank your lucky stars and consider it to be like hitting a jackpot.

I wanted to go to Nv. every time with either $17k or the full $57k because there was no problem in doing so. I don't understand what the worry is about--a random carjacking? THAT would never occur since I always had protection and was trained how to handle that sort of stuff. But even still, to me getting cash from ANY source once inside the casino is something the casino prefers the gambler to do, and I see that as evil.
