Thread: Casino complaints about the new $100 bills

  1. #1
As soon as the new $100 bills were used in casinos, casino slot attendants who make handpays and casino cage workers and tellers were already complaining about the new bills and urging casino patrons to handle the bills carefully.

The problem seems to be that the paper stock appears to be thinner than with other US currency. I handled the new bills when I received a handpay at Harrah's Rincon Casino on Sunday night (see the photo below) and frankly I agree that the new bills appear to feel "thinner" than other currency. Because of the thinner paper stock -- and maybe because of all the features and the ink on the bill -- the bills also seem to stick together.

I saw casino workers spend extra time separating the bills in order to count them out to players at machines and at the cage.

When I had the bills from a handpay I also found that it was difficult to count them and to separate them.

However, the bills do work fine with the bill acceptor devices on slot machines and early this morning when I deposit some of the new $100 bills into a Bank of American ATM that accepts cash, the bills were accepted without any problem. I was careful to make a precise count of the bills before I put them into the ATM deposit device, and the machine and I had the same count for the deposit.

So it appears that technology accepts the new bills even if the paper does feel thinner and for humans the bills seem to stick together.

Perhaps as the bills are used the "stickiness issue" will resolve.

Thanks for being gentle. The other comments I got were mostly that I needed to get new French tips.

I got some 100s the other day. I don't like the feeling and they do stick quite a bit. Instead of worrying about counting issues, I think I will ask for 50s for the forseeable future.

So you don't think fifty dollar bills are bad luck?

It's a "western US" thing. $50 bills are very popular in the East. But here in the West, casinos won't give them as change. You will often see players buy in at craps tables with fifties and you immediately know that they are from the East coast. It is very unlikely that any Vegas casino will give you 50s when you cash out.

    Anybody have a different experience?

I'm not picking on you for anything, but fact is, I have maybe 70 fifty dollar bills in my safe here right now, and every one of them came from a handpay I received from Fandango several months ago. Yes, Fandango is in Nevada, not on the East Coast.

Gee Rob, did you ever get the idea that they were saving those fifty dollar bills to give just to you?

Well you know what my grandma once told me: "You have to go out and make your own luck."

It seems that Rob has done a fine job of creating his own luck, wouldn't you agree?

    Yeah, in his own mind!

Nope. It was overnight (which has always been the best time to play if you value avoiding white trash, Asians, and crowds) and they simply ran out of hundreds to hand out in the middle of a cage count. Since I'm not dumb enuf to take a check which is what they preferred, I was paid in 50's and 20's. Maybe out of spite, but on an $8000 handpay I got the last word and the last laugh, by grabbing all that cash as the lowly paid staff watched and l left very slowly without tipping--which I never do anyway.

Rob, I'm disappointed in you here. Why didn't you slowly wave the big stacks of 20's and 50's in a hypnotic fashion an inch or two away from the lowly paid staff's collective faces just to watch them salivate and become seethingly infuriated as you ever-so-slowly take your leave (with a big pearly white smile and without tipping, of course)?

EDIT TO ADD: With this strategy you might get lucky one of these days that a paid staff member will become so heart-poundingly furious and yell at you or even try to assault you. Imagine the free comps and the lawsuit you can file when that happens.

    MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA....MWHAHAHAHAHAHA..

While I don't really get most of that other than eluding to that which you expanded upon that I did (yes, confusing on purpose), I sense a bit of uneasiness from you at the mere thought of being in a position where you're being paid a sizeable jackpot and could not fathom stiffing the little people. Make it a goal to understand the next level and you will be a happier gambler.

But Alan, where's my points for liking Jews and for my being a strong supporter of Israel? It's a magnificent country, I've been there about 20 times, and it has an unrivaled history. You should visit it....oh Wait! There's no gambling action there, which means they won't be seeing Alan ever....
