Thread: Do you tip when you get a handpay??

  1. #1
A friend of mine who is a professional video poker player told me something that surprised me -- he doesn't tip when he gets handpays. I'm surprised because I have always given a tip to the floor person at a casino who brought me the cash when I hit a jackpot. But my friend, the professional player, told me if he did that he would give away thousands of dollars a year for no good reason. He told me that he literally has thousands of handpays each year playing video poker at the $5/coin and higher level, and if he tipped just $10 per handpay he would be giving away ten thousand, twenty thousand dollars or more.

Usually handpays at casino games are given when the payoff is $1,200 or more and a W2G tax form is issued. On a handpay of $1,200 a $10 tip would be less than 1%. My friend says that even 1% as a tip would cut seriously into his "advantage" as a video poker player.

However, he says when he plays at $25 per coin and $100 per coin levels he will give a tip at the end of his session because usually there is a floor person standing behind him during the entire session writing down each W2G win -- because there are so many at that high denomination. Keep in mind that at the $100/coin level just a three-of-a-kind in Jacks or Better would pay $1,500 which is a W2G handpay.

Well, like I said, I'm surprised he doesn't routinely tip. I always thought that was expected among players -- especially those fortunate enough to hit a jackpot.

Your friend, Mr. Singer, is a cheapskate.

  3. #3
Can't be me Mr. Vic--it says the player SOMETIMES tips handpays. I NEVER tip.

  4. #4
I know you never tip. The cheapskate moniker fits you perfectly.

  5. #5
In all fairness to Mr. Singer, I know of other players who NEVER tip. I, on the other hand, probably tip too much and I have been criticized for that because sometimes my tips would have made the difference between a winning and a losing session. And I've been cautioned not to tip regularly when playing video poker and I get a handpay and instead to tip (if I must tip) at the end of my session.

  6. #6
Than those other players are cheapskates as well. The fact that your friend from the OP never tips a handpay because he would be paying 10.000's in tips just shows he can easily do without that little amount of tip money. He sure is making enough money one would think.....

People who tip casino workers only do so because they're intimidated into doing it. I don't care if they're divorced or struggling starving or degenerate gamblers. If I had tipped regularly over my 10+ years and millions of dollars in W2G's, I wouldn't be driving a ZR-1 around these days. Howd'ya like dem apples?!

I don't like apples to begin with and I'm never intimidated into tipping casino workers for bringing me my money. I tip them for a percentage of my win because I believe in the rule: what you give is what you get. That certainly applies to you Mr. Singer, that's why people in general don't like you and give you a hard time. Some people call it karma, other people have other names for it. Myself, I just call it good manners. Try it for a change.....it might work for you...

If you're as flush as you say,(in another post you said you could comfortably lost $30K a day for 3 months) then the small % of your winnings given out in tips would make no difference in your lavish and obviously snooty lifestyle.

No true professional gambler just hands his money over to slug casino workers for a handpay, and now that I don't do it for a living any more they'll still get nothing from me. People use the "they work for tips" excuse all the time or "I tip them because it's the RIGHT thing to do" nonsense. They care nothing about how I earn my money and I care nothing about how they do. Only weak, intimidated players hand out free money for no apparent reason other than so they don't have to endure a few whispers between co-workers or a stare. Tipping is all inside one's head.

Rob, you missed one thing in your last very indeptful contribution to this thread. You haven't repeated yet how jealous Vic and myself are about your succes........Oh and maybe you should repeat what kind of car you drive one more time so we can worship your succes some more. Please do, please, please........

  12. #12
I'll leave the car out of it this time. It's a little too much for the European roads anyway, ya know, with all those little pregnant roller skates you guys drive and all....

  13. #13
Sorry Rob, you left out the rest too......never knew your car was bigger than an 18-wheeler...at least it's not bigger than your ego.

You know what they say about people with big cars........they are overcompensating for..........you fill in the blanks.

Wauw Alan, you're forum is turning into something quite nice.

So is your good buddy Mr. Singer. But obviously, he can get away with alot more. Than again, you need thim to generate traffic to your forum because otherwise, nothing is happening.....

You're right Vegas_Lover, nothing is happening. A note to all the Internet/forum entrepreneurs out there: I haven't made a dime profit from this Forum yet. It costs me several hundred dollars a month, plus the initial set-up fees. My "public service" is costing me -- and I don't even get invited to "rubber chicken dinners" to give a speech.

  17. #17
Who was talking about profit? I know I wasn't. I was just showing you grant Singer a lot more BS than other contributors, don't sail away from the subject Alan. Will you be in Vegas in October? I'll be more than willing to buy you a drink and a McChicken ( I guess that qualifies as a rubber chicken dinner haha).

I direct my comments to you once in a while because my attacks are directed at Singer individually, I'm not the one making a big effort to insult entire countries or continents. Mr. Singer isn't doing your fellow Americans a favour. You seem ok with giving me lip but you do not publicly "correct" Singer.....That's why I will repeat my previous statement: I question your motives. Prove me wrong.....

  18. #18
I don't have to prove anything. You can post here on my dime.

That's all the confirmation I need Alan. Don't display this as some kind of noble act. Nobody twisted your arm or forced you into creating this forum. Obviously nobody asked for it either since you have no traffic. The little traffic you got during the last couple of weeks came from LVA after your posted links to your own forum multiple times using somebody else's dime......You do this with a reason, and in the end, the goal is making money in some shape or form. Before you reach that stage you will have to invest. So this is just a weak excuse and a diversion of the issue at hand.

Indeed no one coerced me or twisted my arm to create these forums. This was started because of a lack of a moderator and because of the abuse that went on in a Forum for TV and media professionals. I created this forum, at my own expense, to give others in the TV business a place to comment where there would be a moderator and where the abuse that went on in the other forum would not be tolerated. When the TV forum was created --after I licensed the software and paid a web designer to set it up-- we added other topics because it was the "economical" thing to do.

I dont charge anyone anything to post here. There is no subscription. There is no "paid side," unlike other Internet forums.

There is nothing wrong with trying to make money -- but in this case I would be very happy if I could just recoup my expenses. I'm in the hole by several thousand dollars in actual out of pocket payment, and each month I lose another couple of hundred bucks. The clickthrough rates on the pay per click ads is near nil.

Fortunately, Im really not in the Internet business. Im in the TV business. This site was never designed to make money. Rob Singer never paid me a dime for the content of his system here. And the other gaming authors, publishers, experts who also have articles and videos here never paid me a dime either. And in some cases, I also put them on TV on my various TV programs and on my Radio programs at NO charge.

Just as I let you post here, Vegas_Lover... at no charge. But keep in mind, a free press in this country can advertise itself, promote itself, and carry advertising to support itself. By being free of government money, this is how a free press remains free.

By the way, we have other topics and other Forums here, which you are also free to use, and I hope you will.
