Thread: Mahjong Tournament

  1. #1
In the mail today... an invitation from Caesars to take part in their $75,000 Mahjong Tournament in April. Never did I imagine that one day Caesars would host a Mahjong tournament.

Now that there is one, I regret all those days when I was a kid that I didn't observe more closely my Aunts Eva, Jenny, Selma, Sylvia playing Mahjong while my father and Uncles Eddie, Murray, Jack, Saul and others played pinnacle in the backyard on Sundays while we barbecued.

My sister Leslie inherited Aunt Eva's ivory Mahjong set.

Caesars will hold the tournament at Harrah's in a shootout style, which I think means the winner of its game moves on to the next level. 300 are expected for the tournament and if less the $75,000 prize pool will be adjusted lower.

It is not a cash tournament -- and prizes will be paid in "casino play."

So what's next for Caesars? Backgammon, chess, checkers, darts, or a putt-putt golf tournament?

As soon as they have one with "pick a number", "Rock, Paper, scissors" or "guess which hand" I'm there.

I saw some elderly ladies playing Mahjong in a golf clubhouse earlier this year when I was in Las Vegas. Does anyone know if there are standard unified American rules? I know how to play 2 different types, but there are countless variations.

My husband and I both got mailers last Friday for a video poker tournament in April at Planet Hollywood. Going to make reservations for this one.

I am sure there will have to be "official rules" for the tournament. Are there any advantage plays for this?

Yes--mark the tiles and use special glasses.

My mother has played in a $4.00 game my entire life, and there is one lady that wins the whole $12.00 almost every week.

Maybe we should sponsor her for this tournament.

Post the pictures of the wins, please?

I got the Mahjong and Video Poker Tournament invite. The Mahjong cracked my up.

I also got one for a Bingo Tournament in May which is the same weekend as The Billboard Awards at MGM. When i went to the calendar to book rooms for that weekend i couldnt get any full comps but when i got the Bingo Invite, i was able to get 3 nights comped at some of the lower end properties, so i booked Bally's.

I'm surprised I didn't think of this earlier, but maybe they offer the Mahjong tournaments with a Chinese clientele in mind? Gambling in general, particularly Baccarat, is much-loved throughout Asia. Just look at Macau. Steve Wynn and Sheldon Adelson opened casinos over there at their earliest opportunity.

I thought Mahjong had more to do with Hadassah and suburban New York ladies clubs than with anything regarding Asian visitors.

Alan: I'm simply saying Caesar's marketing may have been smarter than we realize. One obvious way to find out is to see who shows up in April and where the players go afterwards...

I think it's safe to say that Caesars and its marketing have changed dramatically over the years. I look forward to finding out about the results.
