Thread: Drunk player leaves behind chips.

  1. #1
I was at Commerce Casino tonight with a friend who wanted to play a little cards. No big playing on my part -- I bought in for $100 at the Mississippi Stud game and colored up and left with $105. Yes... a five dollar profit on the evening.

But while we were at the table a player who was visibly drunk (no kidding, he was drunk) sat down at the table and took out of his pocket what appeared to be $10,000 in new $100 bills. He peeled off ten bills, got two stacks of $25 (purple chips) and sat down to play.

The first thing that struck us at the table was that he didn't know how to play the game. He didn't know the betting structure, or how to post. Or else... perhaps he did know but he was too drunk to play.

He lost the first hand (about $250) and when the cocktail waitress came by and he tried to order a drink she said to him "no more drinks for you tonight. You were cut off."

On the next hand he hit a payoff of $2,000. And he got up from the table and walked away. We don't know where he went.

After about a half hour, a dealer asked for a plastic cover for the chips... and the chips were covered.

Three hours later the player had not returned. It was time for me and my friend to leave and my friend suggested we look for the drunk player. We checked the poker area -- not there. And the bar -- not there.

My friend suggested we tell a floorman. The floorman told my friend "oh I forgot about that player." It was now more than three and a half hours since he left the table.

Did he go home and forget about the $2700 or so that was left on the table?

What troubled us was that during that three and a half hours no floorman came to the table to check on the player or the chips that were left there. I wonder if the casino even knew who the player was? He didn't present a player's card and he bought in with cash so there was no marker.

    Interesting story.

Most players don't use players cards there because the comps are such a joke (like 25c per hour of play).

If he was that drunk I'm a bit surprised the dealer dealt him cards.

Alan do you think that is a common practice in the Casino? I'm sure it's not the first time it happen. There must be some kind of safe guard for the players that the Casino allows to play in this kind of condition. What's your take?

Thanks for joining and for posting Quad AAAA's and I love your screen name.

It was clear that the casino cut him off from drinking any more -- the first time he tried to order from a cocktail waitress he was refused.

There was no floor person at the table when he sat down and bought in for $1,000 and I doubt a dealer would have the authority to deny a drunk player from buying in.

Years ago I was at Hollywood Park at at $100 poker game (buy in was $100) and there was a drunk player who kept rebuying after going all in for $100 on each and every hand. While he was making the rest of the table rich, I went to a floorman and told the floorman what was going on and the floorman came over to him and told him to "take a break."

In the case at Commerce last night, the player did not lose at our table so there really wasnt an opportunity for a floorman to cut him off.

The question is... where did he go? Did he even know he had money left on the table? Will the casino be able to find him?

When we left the chips were on the table covered by a plastic box.

Thanks Alan. I enjoy the forum. I was just wondering if the Casino was going to make an effort to return the chips.

Good luck over the weekend if you're going out to play. I played a little last weekend at Rincon and held my own. Sometimes it appears that the denomination amount has a better pay value. If you're playing $1 & $2 it appears that the return is greater on the hit as compared to $.25 & .50 cents. I was playing the lesser amount my last couple of visits and when I switched to the higher amount it seemed like it was a different ball game. For some reason I was able to hit more quads at the higher amount. Unfortunately I had no Royals and Quad Aces however you can't always get what you want.

Thanks again for the forum and the best of luck to you!

I am sure they are going to "lock up" the chips until claimed. Will they make an "effort" to return the chips? Well, that would depend on whether or not they know who the player is? Imagine for a minute if this was a first-time visitor to the casino who was unknown to the casino -- what do they do then? I am sure they have an obligation to keep the money till claimed.

And it wouldn't surprise me that they have "marked" the video recording of the table so that they can preserve the video of the player... in case someone "else" comes along to claim the loot.
