Thread: Casino Red Eyes

  1. #1
I wasn't sure whether to post this in the California casino or Las Vegas casino section because this topic can apply anywhere....

Has anyone ever stopped at the bathroom when leaving a casino after a gambling session? My last trip was about five hours, and I stopped to wash my hands in the restroom before leaving. I looked in the mirror and my eyes were bloodshot red. I almost looked like I was slowly morphing into a zombie.

A few hours after returning home my eyes turn white again.

Is it the cigarette smoke? I return to a non-smoking house after leaving a casino dense with smoke, so this was the best reason I could come up with....

Maybe it's something else? The glaring lights playing hell with my corneas?

It's the smoke. But when I shower at Caesars and use their soap and shampoo my eyes also turn red, which I think is a reaction to the ingredients. After about an hour the red from the soap/shampoo goes away.

Of course you never want to rub your eyes or even touch your face in a casino unless you carefully wash your hands first. And try to find a touch-free rest room.
See my page about the best casino public restrooms: http://alanbestbuys.com/id223.html

Yes it's the smoke. I always lubricate my eyes once an hour when I'm playing. Although smokers are some of the dumbest of the human species and have zero respect for their own lives, bodies, or families, that's no reason for anybody to have to suffer red eye.

Another question comes to mind: Why the chilling temperature? If I stay over an hour, I feel as if my lungs are frozen inside and sometimes on the way home I leave the air off and it must get about 90 degrees inside the car and I feel comfortable for about 30 minutes.

I can answer that. The casinos tend to keep temperatures cool to help prevent the computer hardware inside slot & VP machines from overheating. When you have hundreds or even a thousand-plus computers all generating heat in close proximity with each other it becomes important to keep the entire casino cool. Overheating is a very real concern with any computer hardware.

I always thought the cool temp is meant to keep everyone awake. I always wear a jacket in any casino even during the summer.

    Hey there, Alan:

Yes, keeping a casino cool may have secondary benefits for the business by helping to keep the patrons awake, but the Muzak system and the slot machine noises also play a major role in wakefulness (if not the predominant role).

As for the overheating VP and slot machines, just think of a bank of VP machines heating up as analogous to a bundle of bananas ripening. A bank of machines clustered together heats up each machine more rapidly than any machine in isolation since each machine is expelling heat to its neighbors. When bananas ripen, they give off ethylene gas and they ripen much more quickly in a bundle because each banana captures the gas from its neighbors. This is why it's always good to break up a bundle of bananas and place them individually far apart from each other in the kitchen so they ripen slower. The casinos cannot break up the machine banks like we can break up banana bundles, hence they must keep the premises at a cool temperature.

One final word: I brought a protective mask like the hospitals give you to wear-it helped with the smoke and kept my breath warmer. I was told I couldn't wear it in the casino. Another time I raised the hood on my jacket when the cold air was blowing on my head and was told that was a no-no. They MUST be able to see your face on the cameras.

Nope--everybody's wrong, as usual. The over-cold air is only for keeping women's nipples hard. Anyone who's ever been to a frat party knows that.

Which casino was that, slingshot? I see many people all the time at Rincon walking around with hospital masks on. There always seems to be someone near by sneezing or coughing. I usually cover my nose and mouth especially after I read that while sneezing is an important part of the immune system, sneezes travel at about 100 miles per hour. A single sneeze can send 100,000 germs into the air.

For six months after my transplant I wore a face mask -- not only in casinos where there was smoking, but also at California card clubs where there is no smoking. That was doctor's orders to limit exposure to coughs and sneezes.

About the hoods -- YES -- they are not allowed.

Casinos need to see the shape of your head and your eyes for facial recognition software. Your nose and mouth are not needed as much. I have been in poker rooms where players were told not to have their hoods covering their head -- the EXCEPTION -- is that "individual hand" when a player is trying to cover facial expressions and then they usually let that "slide."

It was the Horseshoe here in Bossier. I am going to try the mask again-it has been a year since I was told no.

Could you get a note from a doctor on a prescription pad? I'd like to see them tell you to take it off if a doctor prescribed it!

Good idea. I got by with it for a while-thinking maybe it was a thing where they were under different management.
