Thread: Overcharged at a Caesars Palace gift shop

  1. #1
You can be overcharged anywhere when you use a credit card or charge card and it happened to me at Caesars Palace when I used a $500 Total Rewards Gift Card to make a purchase at a gift shop inside Caesars Palace.

When we use credit cards and ATM cards we get monthly statements from our card companies to check and verify our charges and purchases.

But the only way to confirm the correct charges with the Total Rewards Gift Cards is to call the phone number on the back of the card or go to the website address on the back of the card.

No matter if you use a card at a restaurant or a store or to pay your dentist or to buy online you should always check your statements each month.

And in the case of using the Total Rewards Gift Cards you should verify the charges and purchases.

On Labor Day I made a purchase in the gift shop in the Augustus Tower. it was for a watch and the total charge with tax was $372.95 and I paid for the purchase with a $500 Total Rewards Gift Card.

The photo below shows the actual store receipt with the numbers 7939 which are the last numbers on the Gift Card.

The receipt shows I should have had a remaining balance of $127.05 but when I called today to verify the charges and to check the remaining balances on four other Gift Cards I was surprised to be told that card 7939 was maxed out. I was told there was only one purchase of $500 made on the card -- and it was the purchase at the Augustus Caesars Exclusively shop.

I called the store immediately and ironically when I told the store employee who answered the phone that I was overcharged she immediately knew what I was calling about. I overheard her say to someone else "he was overcharged $127 by Amanda."

I asked her, "how did you know it was $127.05?" I hadn't mentioned the amount. And she said to me, "I was at lunch then, and when I saw the transaction I knew you were overcharged."

Well, now it's September 5th, and why didn't this get fixed before I noticed it and before I called?

    They took my number.

Besides the overcharge, I later realized I wasn't given the 25% 7 Stars discount, which another employee told me about when I called.

Now, I am wondering how is it possible that the receipt shows "change due" but the Gift Card has no balance? I wonder if the card was run-through twice once for the card maximum of $500 and once for the actual purchase amount -- and I was given the receipt for the actual purchase amount showing the change.

This reminds me of an employee theft/scam that I almost fell victim to years ago when I was in Miami. I went to a restaurant/bar for a drink with a coworker. I paid for our drinks using an American Express Card. I kept the receipt and always keep receipts to confirm the monthly bills.

When my bill came in the mail, the amount from the restaurant was much greater than my receipt. I immediately called Amex to dispute the charge. Amex told me to contact the restaurant and Amex told me that I would probably be told that the server involved no longer worked there. Here is the scam:

An employee/server is paid in cash by some customers and pockets that cash. Then the server adds the charges that were paid in cash to a "second swipe" of a credit card. This is what happened to me. That restaurant server swiped my card once for the correct amount and gave me that correct receipt. But the server then swiped my card a second time to cover my bill and the bills paid in cash -- forged my signature -- and turned in that forged charge amount to cover the receipts for his shift.

Before customers receive their monthly statements and discover the scam -- the server has moved on to another job -- which is what happened years ago at that restaurant/bar in Miami.

    Alan, that's a disturbing story.

I would not let it go, if I were you. You actually have some clout because you are a regular CET player, racked up 1,000,000 tiers last year, and continue to play fairly regularly, including at Caesars itself. So they don't want to lose you.

It sounds like there is shady business going on at that store. It could be that they are given commission on large purchaes, and it also could be a scam like you described where they overcharge the customer with the card and then pocket cash from the register so it all comes out even.

But you should put their feet to the fire here, because at minimum they knew they accidentally overcharged you and chose to wait until you called to complain about it (terrible) or intentionally stole from you (even worse).

You should find out the name of the manager in charge of these gift shops and really raise hell about this, and tell them that you believe they were intentionally stealing from you, given that they knew "Amanda" overcharged you at the time and did nothing about it.

If you don't get satisfaction, you should call your host and threaten that you will take all of your action to MGM in the future if CET is going to steal from you.

Trust me that heads will roll over this matter. They don't want gift shop employees chasing off their high limit players.

You also might do others a favor by preventing them from getting scammed in the future.

Side question: Any idea why you paid tax here? Have you paid tax before with the $500 gift card? If so, that's pretty lousy, because RC charges avoid tax. I can't understand the difference. The tax may also be a mistake. I was erroneously charged tax at the Rio on a food purchase with RCs in the summer, and while it was a lot of effort to correct, it was determined I was right and they backed it out.

I just showed this thread to my girlfriend, and she pointed something else out.

Their story was that they knew Amanda overcharged you because they came back from lunch and saw the erroneous charge.

But how could they have seen it? As seen on your receipt, everything looks correct. It's a closed transaction for $372.95 with "change" for $127.05.

So there was nothing erroneous for them to discover, since the receipt clearly shows the correct charge.

This story sounds like complete BS.

You should keep the receipt and demand the "erroneous" one. You should demand an exact accounting of what happened and accept no excuses. Anyone who steals from customers deserves to be instantly fired.

I think I figured it out.

    Look at the receipt again.

It says the charge is $372.95.

    Then it says "Mastercard $500".

    That's weird for two reasons:

    1) The TR Gift card isn't a Mastercard

    2) They billed your card $500, and then you were due "change" of $127.05.

Have you ever seen anything like this before? A credit card or gift card never gets change. It's always charged for the exact amount due.

So it sounds like Amanda charged you $500 and pocketed the change.

And it's hard to say that this was an accident, because they admitted knowing about it 4 days ago. So Amanda can't claim that she got confused and entered $500 instead of $372.95 and didn't realize it until now.

This is either an ongoing scam there, or Amanda really did make this mistake and they decided just to pocket the difference unless you complained about it.

The Total Rewards Gift Card is a Mastercard.

I've raised various issues with the three people I've spoken with tonight including my belief that my card was charged twice -- once for $500 and once for the correct amount.

There is also some question about a 7 Stars discount with the TR gift cards and when I get an answer I will post it.

I didn't realize it's a Mastercard. So why can't you use it anywhere else but CET properties?

Anyway, I don't think they charged it twice. Your receipt tells the whole story. They charged you $500, you were due $127.05 change, and you weren't given the change (likely intentionally).

Also Alan, you realize that your card number is readable in that pic, right? Maybe you should change it.

The card can only be used at Caesars properties. It must be presented. The number alone does no good. Besides that... it's maxed out. LOL

On a side note, if you don't get the Seven Stars discount when you use the gift card, that's awful.

I think this is worth some discussion. I've used the cards at various Las Vegas locations including the front desk to pay for my hotel charges (room service for the most part including tips) and at various restaurants. Three times I used Gift Cards at gift shops.

At the first gift shop I purchased some Adidas golf shirts and glassware -- actually a whole set of glasses for home. To be honest, I don't remember if I was given a 7 Stars discount.
On Monday, I used part of a gift card at the shop at the lobby of Caesars to purchase another Adidas golf shirt and I was given a 25% discount.
Also on Monday, I presented a new $500 card to the gift shop in the Augustus Tower for the watch -- and I didn't ask for a 7 Stars discount and forgot all about a 7 Stars discount until my conversation earlier today when one of the three employees said I should have received it.

Late tonight -- when speaking to the third employee, a manager -- I was told that it was not clear if 7 Stars also get a discount when using a TR gift card. She said she would get back to me with what the actual policy is. She said there was no clear policy about the gift card.

Let's wait for the official answer. But I also agree that you should get the 7 Stars discount as the "cash register computer" doesn't know the difference if this particular MasterCard was from Total Rewards or from Bank of America or any other bank.

Sunday night, 10PM: I got a call from the "retail department" at Caesars and the overcharge was REMOVED and I was also given a 25% 7 Stars discount on the purchase.

I think Caesars was very quick to correct the error after I brought it to their attention, but I am disappointed that someone didn't fix it before I noticed the overcharge. Had I not checked the available balance on my cards I might never have noticed the overcharge.

And now we know that the 7 Stars discount DOES apply to using the Total Rewards Gift Cards.

This was not a mistake. Someone or several employees probably do this selectively to 7-Stars since probably more often than not, these customers are far more mentally involved in their gaming activities than they are about remaining balances after small purchases. At this point, because I've had such good gambling results @ CET fairly recently, I'd probably just have let this slide instead of spending the time and anxiety getting it resolved. When you simplify your life the hassles have a way of keeping their distance. However, when I was playing for a living and was only diamond, I'd have been all over them and would have dug a bit deeper than you did, until someone with management accountability was forced into explaining the whole thing in a face-to-face setting. THAT'S where you get your answers, either spoken or not.

Dan's no longer married? What a surprise....

I think this shows your irresponsibility as a player and a consumer. And because you would let an overcharge and a lost discount of more than $200 just slide, how can anyone trust you to be making the right decision about anything else in a casino?

I would never advise anyone to let $200+ just "slide."

Rob, I am with the same woman that I've been with since 2009, who is also the mother of my son.

We are not officially married, so I use "wife" and "girlfriend" interchangeably.
