Thread: best demonination to play for my bankroll

  1. #1
    Hey all

I'd really appreciate your insight on my bankroll question.

say I have 10k to play vp with for a 2 day session. would you play $5 vp single line or would you play multi hand at $1 for 5 hands? So the bet amount is the same but it's my understanding that the varience is better on multi hand?

I know I could bet $25 a credit and hope to hit big early, but I'm curious as to what you all think.

my win stop limit will $3000 for the trip and my loss limit will be the entire 10k.if I win more obviously I'll be happy with that, but I'd be happy to take home a win of 3k!
    Thanks all

I should add, I'm prepared to play any vp game, I am not a perfect player but have reference cards and WoO site pulled up for reference.

    Thanks all

Are the paytables the same on the single line and five line machines? If so play the five line.

  4. #4
yes, same pay tables. Ok, and would you do a lower denomination with more hands or higher with less?

I can't tell you what denomination to play. What makes you comfortable?

I'll probably do $1 credit, so $50 per hand for 10 hands.
    Thanks for your replies Alan.

A lot depends on the variance of the game. The higher the variance the better your chances of reaching your win goal (at equal game return) and the better your chances of going broke. At $5 denomination ($25/hand) you can lose $5,000 per hour on a high variance game. At $50/hand you could lose it all in an hour.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I'll probably start on 9/6 job. good advice to consider the variance

    Bad advice all around.

First off, expecting to win $3000 with a $10k bankroll is insane. You'd need extraordinary good luck to do so, and since vp is a very unforgiving game, don't count on it happening. Setting a win goal of $500 playing a single denomination is challenging enough, but more attainable.

Five-play is a good approach, but start at quarters and play up to 2000 credits. Use a high variance game such as SDBP, TBP+, Super Aces BP, or even DDBP if none of these are available. Don't worry about the paytables being positive or negative, but play the best one you can find where it is you choose to play. If you lose the quarters w/o attaining the $500 win goal, play the same game at dollars. Remember you need to recover your $500 in quarter losses and anything lost in dollars PLUS attain at least a $500 net profit before quitting. If you fail, go to the $2 level and continue with 2000 more credits. I usually recommend at least four levels, but if $10,000 is all you have then it's all you have.

I won't call it insane, but it really is very optimistic. However, rymetymeuk did state what his win goal was and what his loss limit was, and Rob you have always said that if you state your plan going in to the casino that you can't find fault with it. So, I won't even attempt to find fault with this plan.

Not that anyone is asking, but I would try a different approach:

I would take the ten thousand to a single line $5 machine playing 8/5 Bonus or 8/5 Aces and Faces with both paying slightly better than 99%. I would run the $10k through ONCE which would be 400 plays. If I matched expectations I would have $9,920 after running through all $10K. But if I got lucky, I would prepare to cash out early.

What do I mean by "lucky"? Well for example, if I hit four of a kind paying $1,000 or four of a kind paying $625, I would cash out. if the quad came early in the 400 hands it would make for a nice pay day. If the quad came late in the 400 hands it might still give me a profit or make up for losses.

Of course it is also very possible to have a profit on the 10K even without one quad. So after running through the $10K one time, I would do an accurate count to determine exactly what my profit or loss was.

I am not a fast player, but I would estimate that 400 hands would take me about 30 to 40 minutes to play. No matter if I were showing a profit or a loss, after that 30-40 minutes I would cash out, redeem the tickets at the cashier, and take a five minute walk (perhaps a bathroom break) just to "think about" what I had won or lost.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the replies. I'll look into those strategies some, thanks again

This is a very interesting thread. I appreciate hearing of all the different strategies.

I really enjoy playing video poker. But, I don't like going and knowing every time that the money I play with is entertainment money and if I lose it every time then I lose it every time. That's just not okay with me. Especially when I feel the addiction coming on and nothing is going into my savings anymore.

If I made a spreadsheet and saw how much I was losing it wouldn't be something I would feel good about. I know most of the time I can come home with a profit even if it's only a couple hundred dollars. I feel like the more I play the greedier I get. What you guys have said definitely gives me hope and some goals to set for myself. I really appreciate the different ways of looking at this. I'm definitely going to start trying some win goal strategies.

Vpnewbie, don't forget that if you win a good amount in any session which puts you "ahead of expectation" the "math" has already determined that you must give it all back

Alan, I absolutely do advocate a pre-determined plan, but when someone says that plan is to win 30% of their starting bankroll on vp, a correction is required. There are many variations to my overall strategies that I find little fault with, but unrealistic goals must be addresses--whether playing my type of strategy or not.

Perhaps the most difficult thing for a learning vp player to do is to leave the casino action behind after hitting an early winner that attains a goal, with all that cash burning a great big hole in one's pocket. Overcome this and you're on your way to enjoying the game and winning a whole lot more.

My bankroll is nothing compared to most. As a matter of fact. I will probably never be 7 Stars and I'm okay with that.

I've been so intrigued with Chimps win last week on a certain slot machine in the high limit room that I can't help but want to play it. Thursday I played(it was actually the wrong machine)I put in $100, it was $10 a play. I got up to over $400 and then lost it all.

Last night I played "her" machine. I put in $80. It was $15 a play. I quickly went to $300 and then lost it all.

I also played "Alan's" machine and was doing fair. I played for a long time on $100. I hit one set of quads and cashed out my $100 but could have been a lot more if I had cashed out after the quads.

BTW; Alan, have you noticed 3116 hits a lot of quad 10s?

I really am going to work on win goals and stop. Thanks Rob.

VPnewbie regarding 3116: there were times when it appears to hit a lot of quad tens... and then jacks... and then deuces... and then queens... oh, you get my point.

I once went a year without quad tens then all I got was quad tens. LOL

My strategy now is very simple: I just use free play till the end of the year. And start over in January for 7 Stars.

Rob, can you give us an example of a "realistic" scenario of a bankroll/win goal strategy. Or for me, as a "small time gambler" with a lower end bank roll.

  18. #18
Lol, Alan. I like what you said in your post prior to this last one. The last paragraph really gave me something to think about. Thanks.

Yes. But I need to know factors such as actual bankroll(s) when going to casinos, game(s) you wish to play, and whether or not you are there for a certain number of days or if you can hit & run. You can e-mail me if you like at rob.singer1111@yahoo.com

Okay, so if I am taking $300 two times a week. Separate trips. The casino is local to my house.
