Thread: California Prop 48

  1. #1
On Tuesday's ballot here in California is Proposition 48 which would amend the state constitution to allow an Indian tribe in Central California to build and operate a casino on off-reservation land.

The deal was made some time ago, but now voters will have to "ratify" the deal previously made with the legislature and the governor.

Most (if not all) of the California Tribes with casinos on-reservation are opposing this. Their fear is that if 48 is approved it will open the door to more off reservation casinos and the Tribes that invested heavily with on-reservation casinos will be at a big competitive disadvantage.

Imagine for a minute if a Tribe had a casino in the San Fernando Valley. Would anyone from West LA or the Valley or San Gabriel Valley drive to Temecula or Riverside?

It's no surprise that the Pechanga Tribe which has the biggest casino in the Western US (bigger than anything in Vegas) is now advertising heavily to oppose Prop 48.

Here are some of the No on 48 TV commercials that started airing here:

Personally, I was in favor of a proposed Constitutional Amendment about decade ago that would have allowed non Indian casinos to offer the same gaming as Indian casinos -- and that would have allowed casinos such as Commerce and Hollywood Park in the LA area to have slot machines and other table games. It also would have allowed full Vegas-style gaming including real dice games (craps) and real roulette with a wheel and ball. The Vegas casinos didn't want that competition, nor did the existing Indian casinos.

And now the existing Indian casinos don't want another tribe to open a casino off-reservation.

And here is the video from the Tribe that would benefit if 48 is passed:

And here's how the League of Women Voters looks at it:

Wanted to bump this thread as Druff covered indian gaming pretty well on the 1/1/22 show. He covered alot of topics and updates most people dont know about. The best part of the conversation was that indian gaming was to fix and help certain people and it really hasnt and the check points have failed.

Heres the ultimate question.. Would Cali Gaming have oversight rights with the non rez casinos?? If so its a slam dunk to vote to approve this as Druff will tell you right now the Indians can do whatever the hell they want to customers when it comes to screwing them on the rez with the casino gaming the state has zero authority.. I would assume and think if the Indians are allowed to build and its not on the rez then it should pass and needs to for the sake of fairness to customers to maybe force at least a modicum of protection against the we can do whatever we want mentality some Tribes have taken not to pay out money owed to customers.

Edit: How the hell did I not notice this was from 2014 and likely totally irrelevant to even ask now.

I think you nailed it on all points. What I see in the future is too many indian casinos in California that they might just collapse. Another one coming to the Sacramento County area and its just too much as is as they are sprinkled all over the Nor Cal area.
