Thread: Snow possible for Las Vegas NYE

  1. #1
    Dress warm.

Cold spell coming to the western US. Highs in Vegas in coming week to only be in the 40s, with lows below freezing.

Weak storm possibly moving in December 31, snow possible as 2015 arrives in Vegas.

Would not advise standing outside for NYE for hours in Vegas unless you are used to cold weather.

Times Square is only going to be a few degrees cooler, and with no snow.

Last year, the Katy Perry show ended at about 11pm giving everyone in the ballroom time to go outside to watch. Caesars had the Strip entrances closed so it was easy to walk out the front doors and onto the driveways just before midnight -- and then walk back into the casino. I watched at the main entrance right by the fountain where valets usually deliver cars, then simply walked back in. There was no snow last year, but my date and I were covered with ash because of the fireworks that came from the roof of Caesars.

Vegas isn't all that warm this time of year. I think the average high would be around 60 and the low around 40. Still somewhat cooler and snow is always a pain in Vegas as the drivers do not know how to drive in snow. OTOH, the low here on NYE is predicted to be around -5°F and the high in single digits.

I recall most January nights in Vegas with the temp getting well below freezing, and sometimes in the 20s. Driving through the desert the temp often drops to the teens at night during the winter.

My lament for driving to Vegas from LA is that during the summer the freeway is so hot that I am afraid my tires will melt, and during the winter I'm afraid that if I stop the tires will freeze with a flat bottom.

Tires don't freeze unless it is far, far colder than you experience. I plan on leaving my car outside for two nights in those negative temperatures and I have no doubts the tires will be fine.

I remember pictures in National Geographic (I think, it was in elementary school) of "square tires" in Alaska from the cold.

I lived in Syracuse for 6 years... the land of "six inches of partly cloudy on the sidewalk" and I know what Lake Effect Snow/Cold really is.

Now only 10% chance of snow on NYE, but will be a very cold day. High will only be 37, and will be below freezing at midnight.

Also if you haven't been to Mammoth and seen 6 feet (!!) of snow come down in 24 hours, you haven't really seen heavy snow.

Just found out that the Jennifer Lopez show starts at 10:30pm and will be on at midnight and the fireworks be on big screens in the Colosseum. So 4200 guests can avoid the cold if they want to. Personally, I might bolt from the concert to catch the fireworks outside.

Alan, this "undercomped" Seven Stars member got a great high floor, Augustus room with a great strip/fireworks view. PLUS I got them to move my parents' room to our floor (they aren't even TR members), when otherwise they would have been in the Palace Tower. That room was also free.

Dan, but they still wouldn't give you the show or brunch or dinner?

This AM the temperature outside was 4°F and my car started fine and the tires were fine after being outside for 2 full days. I think it needs to be 40° colder before you have problems with tires.

Arc... absolutely right. You don't get square tires until the temps are well below zero.
