Thread: Right after a big win??

  1. #1
The recent success of several forum members with big wins made me look back to when I had a few lucky big hits -- and what I did after those big hits.

I have to admit that I don't have any clear cut strategy or "personal policy" about what to do after a big win.

There were times I quit and went home, and there were times I kept playing and won more, and then there were times I kept playing and lost much or all of what I had won earlier in that trip or visit.

Does anyone have a personal rule about what they do after a big win? Of course a big win amount will vary based on what you play -- so for some a big win could be $1,000 while for others a big win might be a $100,000 royal.

Using your own memory what did you do after a big win? Or if you haven't had a big win yet, what would you do when it came? Or, perhaps you haven't thought about it?

I think it's funny how the mathematically optimal choice would absolutely be the single most unpopular thing to do with -EV games for most people: Quit immediately after winning big and never play again for the rest of your entire life.

A couple years ago the guy that won the national handicapping championship for horse racing bought the horse that he made his final bet on to win the contest. Pretty cool.

Most +EV players set up their play ahead of time. Their goals are based on long term math. Hence, any "big win" is immaterial. They usually just continue to do what they planned to do. And yes, this is close to what I do. However, since I don't have the big advantage I used to have, my play now is more along the lines of a recreational player. Gambling is a hobby. I'm just trying to break even.

Looking back there are times I experienced all of the situations Alan mentioned. I've hit multiple royals in one day several times but I've also lost entire royals after hitting one.

I think we've all done that.

When I go to a local casino with a small session budget, any $$ from a Royal automatically comes back home. Depending on the status of the budgeted money, I may play it all or bring some home..no set rule with that. When on vaca in Vegas or on a cruise (yes, I have hit royals on cruise ships), the Royal money also comes home untouched. Now technically, one could say that I, too, have "lost an entire royal after hitting one" as the money from some of those royals is recycled through my gaming stash and ends up back in a casino, but those royals have also paid for a lot of other things outside of casinos.

Since the majority of my gambling is done on a Vegas vacation, nine times out of ten I will just keep on playing even after a "big hit".
After all, I didn't fly 1750 miles to sit in my room.
If I am lucky, the big hit will happen on my last day in town and then it comes home with me.

    Good to have Bonnie here.

A related question: after hitting the biggest jackpot on a machine would you continue playing THAT machine? For example -- Chimp will you play that slot again after your $50k win?

Yes, I will play it again. I enjoy that machine. I never expected to hit its biggest jackpot but I did. So maybe I will again. Although I would not be playing it with that expectation. (Just hope )
It was not a "challenge" that I conquered and no longer need to go after. I consider it another jackpot that I hit on a machine I enjoy and the amount will not have any (concious) influence on whether I continue to play it or not play it.

When I'm in LV on vacation, I budget a certain amount for each day's gaming. Those envelopes from the bank teller come in handy, and I have an envelope for each day. This system, and the discipline to follow it, gets me "out of the room" each day. My big hits, regardless of when they happen, always go into the room safe and back home....and fund another trip to LV. Tomorrow night, I leave this miserable Michigan winter for a few days in the gaming mecca...courtesy of some big hits brought back home.

Came out in good shape. Returned home with all the money I started with, plus an additional 25% profit. .. which may improve even more if any of my bets on the Masters come through OR my wager on the Detroit Tigers succeeds: took the Over 84.5 wins.
