Are you hooked on MGM MLife and Caesars Total Rewards online games? Casino law expert, Professor Nelson Rose, says they are designed to hook you and in an article now posted on my main website he talks about the legal issues and possible regulation of these online casino games. Excellent article. I recommend every visitor to this forum read it. The key points made by Nelson Rose include (1) your level of skill playing the "social games" offered by CET or MGM determines the payback since the program makes adjustments to hook you, (2) the games are identical to casino games, but with higher paybacks that may affect your perception of the return when you sit at the real casino games, and (3) sites make a profit from those not patient enough to wait for free chips, which also trains you to pay for play.

Professor Rose has done every reader a service with this easy-to-read article. I can further recommend the book, Addiction by Design by anthropologist Natasha Schull, for an in depth look at what people face when dealing with video poker and other casino machine games.

I play VP on the Caesars site and play all the goofy slots on the MLife site (from which I have redeemed show tickets and monorail passes). I have yet to pay a single penny to either site.

The bolded part is really dirty, and shows that these "free" games are more than just an innocent marketing gimmick to get people excited about playing casino games.

Since I never play free casino games, I didn't realize this.

Reminds me of an old pool-hall hustle where the regular feigns poor play, intentionally loses the first small bets, and then kicks the stakes up and suddenly plays like an expert.

Most of the comments posted by players on these sites complain about the games being too tight...and some say they are worse than casinos. Now, "too tight" may just be sour grapes for "I paid $$ to play here...I should win on every spin".

I can't compare their slots with casino slots as I don't play them enough in casinos, but of the 2 VP games offered @Caesars site, the JOB seems to play just a little worse only in that getting dealt a quad seems to be more rare than what I have experienced in casinos. Otherwise, it plays out fairly and doesn't seem to be "rigged".

Alan, why isn't the whole article up?

Here is the entire I. Nelson Rose article about the matter: http://www.gaminglawmasters.com/site...asinogames.pdf

They have only 2 games, both are 100 hand. I don't play the Deuces, but the JOB is a full 9/6. I'm up over $2.6B in "winnings", level 978, so that's a lot of play. With that, I still feel the frequency of dealt quads is less than what I experience in the casinos.

While I enjoy Professor Rose's articles, I don't think there's much value in having edited, slimmed down versions of his original posts here. You might as well just go to the original article if you're interested in the topic.

It's up to you, but if I were you, I would ask him if he could provide the full articles here.

I'm not sure if he even knew he sent only part of the article. He sent text and not a link. But I know there are restrictions on what I am allowed to post.

Yes, I can understand that. This "short version" may have just been an oversight, but I know folks who do various versions of papers, and each version has its own rights because significant material has been added. So if I promise an "expanded, never-before-published" version to one venue, then I better make sure I don't make that same version available to another, especially for free, or I'm stepping on many toes and breaking my word.

Alan, have you often done various versions for different publishers?

No. My articles have been unique. But some articles were originally TV reports including my investigation of the unemployment stats. First on TV then in the Washington Journalism Review.
