Thread: Free Play discussion

There would have to be something very very lucrative for me to play for, and if I did, I'll find the cheapest way to get it. Or even better, make money while going for it!

Back to FP. Yesterday at a local 'store', I had $80 FP. Went and got it and left. Was there all of 20 minutes.

To me it's a win win situation. Me and the casino are both using each other and even though I have never had a winning year, the benefits that my wife and I have reaped through the TR program at CET far exceed the amounts that we have lost. Would I love to win every year? Of course, who wouldn't. Unless the flood gates open, and I start getting an unusually huge amount of royals and/or 4oak's I don't expect that to happen.

I have a similar story but it goes back about ten years ago, when MGM owned the casinos at Primm. I had a $100 CASH offer from Buffalo Bills. I just had to show my ID at the cage and they would give me cash, chips or ticket. I took the cash. And walked out to the parking lot, and got in my car and continued my drive to Vegas.

Hollywood Park Casino (the card casino in LA) under its old management used to give hourly points that were exchangeable for cash or food. I let my account build up because I wouldn't eat there. I think I let my account build up for about a year -- when I realized I had about $200 cash value in the account. So one night on the way to a date, I stopped by the casino -- ran in, swiped my card at the kiosk, got my voucher, cashed it at the cage -- and went on to my date.

I would like to see an actual accounting that shows this.

My understanding is that comps are worth only a couple of tenths of one-percent of your coin-in. If for example you play a game that pays 99.2% the comps would add 0.2% for a theoretical return of 99.4%.

How much do you value things like hotel rooms in Vegas? Or the limo ride? Or even the free play? Unfortunately the hotel and the limo and the free play are tied to the casino which to me makes them worth ZERO.

Even the $500 7 Stars dinner I get requires a casino visit and can only be used at a casino restaurant. It's not like they are giving me $500 that I can use at my local Ralph's Supermarket.

Don't get me wrong -- I want my perks. I want my offers. But I can't use them to offset any losses. A loss is a loss.

It's easy when it's close. Had it been a ways a way, no way in hell would I waste my time for it. I have another $20 starting today at the same location, but that's good through the rest of the month. Instead, I'll wait until next Monday when my next weekly offer kicks in and collect both at once.

In our case for the last 4 years we have averaged over 10 free RT airfares each per year. You don't cruise Alan but we have gotten some free cruises. Probably averaged at least 50-60 nights free rooms some times in suites. Limo transportation, free concerts, free food etc, etc. Lots of free play every year, but I don't count that because when I say that we lose about 15 -20,000 a year that is the net in the bank account we use for nothing but our gambling activities.

To us, going to the casino is a combination of recreation and almost unlimited travelling opportunities as CET owns casinos in most of the places we want to go to anyway. Many of our friends spend more on one vacation than we lose in an entire years worth of gambling. And it is like owning 2 months worth of timeshares without having to pay the bs fees and taxes, transfers, and maintenance fees.

seemoreroyals if you are happy with that trade-off then good for you.

But be honest: would you take as many cruises if you didn't feel that they were your way to get even after losing $20,000 a year? Would you take as many trips? And would you make as many casino visits?

I'm wondering if you've fallen into the casino trap?

We are retired so we would be travelling somewhere. The cruises are attractive to us when they are totally free like the 7 star event cruise was last year. I am still kicking myself for missing the one the year before that. Even the regular 7 star cruises are not that bad. All my wife and I are paying for are the fees, taxes, and tips or about $1000 between the two of us for a cruise to Alaska in September. Even the flight ended up as free as we used AA frequent flier miles earned primarily by other CET Northern Nevada Air flights.

seemoreroyals you are both very fortunate retirees to be able to take advantage of so much and getting more value than the $20,000 you lost. This is working for you and that's great!!

Thanks Alan. But to answer the other part of your question, if all the free stuff went away, even though we like going to the casino, we probably would not go as much. But, I am hoping I can pick up some strategies to be able to win more often from you and Rob Singer so that when the day comes when CET pulls the rug out from all of us that are overcomped I can still justify going to the casino.

  11. #31
I dont have any strategies -- I just followed what I learned from Dancer and Grochowski. I play conventional strategy. I am interested in what Rob has to say but I don't follow his strategies.

Well maybe you could let me borrow your lucky rabbits foot you carry with you when you hit those $20,000 royals. Just kidding. I do the same thing you do but on a smaller scale. I play quarters and $1's as opposed to $2 and $5 machines. And I like nickel and quarter multi play machines as well to cut back on the volatility.

Alan you were right to question the claim that the "freebies" are worth more than the losses. If I got a dollar from everyone who's told me that over the years, I could string'em around the globe. It's what's called "self-valuation at its best" in order to justify playing and losing too much. I also regularly hear "we were going to do SOMETHING anyway" so why not get the goods while having a chance at the gold too!? Pure music to the casino owners' ears.

The proper way to say all this without the spin and deflection would be: "We lost some overall even after all the free comps, cruises, shows, rooms, food and goodies etc., as is typical for players like us (otherwise the casinos would not remain open, obviously), and we enjoyed our trips to gamble because they are always like mini vacations for us--and we are always willing to pay a little extra and more than the non-gamblers out there who do the same as us since gambling is what we enjoy doing".

Don't forget the silver, gold, and platinum merit badges and new best friends, your ever-lovin' hosts.

I was sitting here, trying to figure out what would get me to play slot machines with 10% house take, and thought, "You know, if a hologram of nude celebrities kept popping up, that would be worth playing." Maybe an Angelina Jolie, or a Madonna, or a Brad Pitt or George Clooney celebrity lap dance slot machine.

So why don't we have them yet?

Thanks Rob. That's is certainly a better way to describe it. We certainly enjoy the mini vacations and would probably take more cruises than we do but as a general rule do not like to be away from home more than a few days at a time.
