Thread: Super Bowl bets before the season starts

I know NOTHING about sports betting but I am guessing that you can make bets on who will be in the Super Bowl or who will win it now?

Yes. It's called a future bet. At my book the Green Bay Packers are the favorite to win the superbowl at +550, followed by Seattle Seahawks at +650. The rest look like this:

    Colts +850
    Eagles +850
    Patriots +900
    Cowboys +1400
    Broncos +1400
    Steelers +2000
    Ravens +2000
    Dolphins +2500
    Vikings +2800
    Chiefs +3300
    Cardinals +4000
    Falcons +4000
    Lions +4000
    Saints +4000
    Chargers +4000
    Giants +5000
    Bills +5000
    Bengals +5000
    Panthers +5000
    Texans +5000
    49er's +6600
    Rams +6600
    Bears +7500
    Raiders +7500
    Jets +10000
    Browns +10000
    Buccs +10000
    Redskiins +12500
    Jaguars 20000
    Titans 20000

I did nothing with NFL futures thus far with the exception of LeSean McCoy at 17-1 to win the NFL rushing title. I considered Roethlisberger to win the passing yardage title, but everyone is on him. The best available at this point was one +900 outlier. The problem is that the Steelers close the season with five potential cold-weather games, and that is no way to win the passing title when Luck and Brees play in domes.

I just returned from Las Vegas and did some things with NCAA futures, but those are classified.

This has got to be a joke right? A guy runs a gambling website and doesn't know what a futures bet is? Alan, do you just think of Bullshit topics to drive traffic?
This one may top my all time favorite Bullshit topic starter of yours! (You know the one on how much a side of avocado costs at your local fast food joint) do you really give a shit if a side of avocado is 50 cents or 75 cents?

Technically, it's a Las Vegas site, not a gambling site. Since sports book income accounts for about 3% of LV profits, I can see where someone can be intimate with LV but reasonably naïve regarding sports betting.

I'm just curious, if you were speaking to Alan in person, is this the tone and language you'd use and why? I don't really think you're out of line or anything, but Kevlar sales must be up these days.

It's worth only $20 million dollars (according to the Wizard's forum's BS "statistics"); not the billion dollars of a casino.

Red - I would most certainly speak the same way. I'm not some old man or little girl. I speak my mind and am usually 100% correct. Others consider it harsh but the truth hurts some. I've never been rude to you have I? There are only 2 people whom I feel are easy targets to ridicule on this forum. And that's because their Bullshit flies so easily out of their mouths that they tens to be unable to differentiate the truth from fiction. I understand 100% that your a fan of Alan and this site. That's your prerogative.

Technically this is a shopping site with more than 400 pages on stores and businesses with more than 1,200 videos. My main website has as many as 9,000 visitors and this Forum has a couple hundred in a day including a few assholes who drop in from time to time.

Getting back to the topic: is there a last day for making a Super Bowl bet? And how about a reasonable long shot bet?

In the NFL, futures are usually available week to week as the season progresses. The sports books in LV are required to eliminate teams from their listings that are mathematically eliminated. Bally's got in some trouble about 20 years ago when they kept odds up on teams in the NFL that were mathematically eliminated and some Asian high rollers bet on them. Conference futures for college teams will usually go off the board once the first conference game is played. Futures for the college national title will be available all season long.

I like this site for a number of reasons, one of which is Rob is an example of a number of classic sociological and psychological angles. I just wish civility reigned a bit more. Let me give you an example. Thirty years ago, I visited Charles Honorton's parapsychology lab as part of a crew that was, more or less, debunking his work. Despite the fact we were, in a sense, looking for flaws in his life's work, he was more than civil (as scientists should be), and we were absolutely civil and respectful.

Red---you adroitly sidestepped the "reasonable long shot" request from Alan.

Come on--throw him a small bone. I can assure you that Alan won't ruin the odds.

Best I can do is tell him don't waste any money on my beloved Bears. Gonna be a long time until they are competitive IMO.

I'm probably one of the assholes you are referring to. But after reading your history in the news business I have to say I have a new found respect for you. Thanks for looking out for us, even the ones of us who are jerks.

Thanks singahkillah. And remember every time you buy gas I'm saving you money.

Hey regnis at least you have a super bowl win. My beloved chargers are still without one. I did not make a futures bet on them last time I was in vegas, but I wish I had. A hundred bucks on them at about 40 to 1 would have made the season more interesting.

You saved a hundred bucks Danny. This year will be the same cast of characters as usual. The game is run by elite QB's and over-the-top defenses. These new run-option QB's don't really have what it takes. Seattle's annihilation of Denver was an extraordinary exception.
