Thread: Vegas Strip a Dangerous Place

  1. #1
We are all shocked by what happened on Sunday -- a driver allegedly drove her car on the sidewalk twice to intentionally hit pedestrians.

A similar incident happened in 2005 near the same location -- that was Bally's instead of Paris.

I was glad that pedestrian bridges were built at that intersection -- and I remember when you had to wait for traffic lights and walk signals in the old days.

Now Vegas needs to install "tank traps" or barriers to prevent cars from driving up on the sidewalks.

I don't understand how or why the captain interviewed said "it was not a terrorist act." Methinks he speaks too fast and too soon. Just because some toddler is in the vehicle doesn't rule out terrorism. That must be the party line prior to the cash-flow holidays.

    It's irresponsible to say that.

The assault took place at Paris Hotel and Casino a month after the Paris attacks. It's a little strange for a "not terrorism" declaration.

The police now acknowledge she gave a reason for the attack but they are not making that reason public.

    Draw your own conclusions.

It took some time before they called the San Bernardino shootings terrorism.

But I wouldn't rule anything out in the Vegas crash including mental illness with no terrorist plot.

Slightly off topic, but Redietz's comment reminds me of the insane amounts of money defense contractors have milked from the US taxpayer over the years when terrorism is emphasized so much. Follow the money...

Any metropolitan area with heavy pedestrian traffic on the sidewalks is just as susceptible to having an incident like this one. Change your thread title to "all crowded sidewalks are dangerous places". Leave the shooting from the hip to Rob.

I lived and worked in New York for many years. I don't recall incidents like this Vegas one happening in NYC.

The worst pedestrian incident I remember was in the early 1970s when a helicopter smashed into a high rise send debris to the street below.

The criminal driver was black with one of those ridiculous first names those people use. It's entirely possible the ugly b*tch did this because if her hate for white people, thereby justifying the hit in her Obama-infected mind. I call that terrorism.

I have read the updates -- still no publicized motive although the police acknowledged she had given one when arrested. I have no idea how to interpret this. If she had a reason for doing this, why not just make it public?

The "reason" (and it's hard to justify any reason for harming and killing innocent people) might be her own mental problems -- and perhaps revenge she thought she was taking out on her estranged family.

Also, the police almost by definition don't jump to release partial information. They have their procedures and often times the procedures don't mesh with the public's schedule. I learned this early in my career and here's what happened:

It was 1976 and I was an assignment editor with CBS News in New York. It was just before the Bicentennial Celebration in New York City and the Tall Boats and Naval ships were coming to the Hudson River. Around the same time there was a horrible crash on the George Washington Bridge involving a truck that caught fire. The fire damaged the road surface. The upper level of the bridge was closed. We had a desk assistant call the police to ask them when the bridge repairs would be made and the bridge opened.

The desk assistant calls and comes into the office with the Northeast Bureau Chief, the assistant chief and me and says the police said "the bridge is closed indefinitely." So I said, "does that mean it's closed for the next 100 years?" Of course I was being cynical but the point was the police used the word "indefinitely" because they didn't know how long it would take to repair the road bed. Actually, the bridge was closed for about 8 hours but the police wouldn't say "eight hours or six hours or ten hours" so they give the "police answer" of "indefinitely."

Tell us how you really feel. Don't hold back!

Rob, I'm afraid to have dinner with you. I don't want to be caught in any crossfire or hit by any stray bullets or malatov cocktail thrown your way. Would you mind sending me a gift card instead?
